Old Rhinebeck Video

The trip to Old Rhinebeck was a lot of fun. I'll put up a video today giving a short tour of the facility with a talk about some of the airplanes there.

There is a lot I have never talked about before, not only WW1 airplanes but some general things about early aviation like Glenn Curtis' attempt to prove Samuel Langley invented the airplane. I get a little annoyed whenever I think about that. Hopefully that didn't come through in the video.

Anyway, look for the video on youtube in the next hour or two. Update, this will be the link, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H_Uqe-0FjaYbut it's taking another 90 mins or so to load.

Hey Greg! Rhinebeck is an amazing place! I went there for the first time as a 13 year old. Got to meet Cole Palin. He has a pretty interesting story maybe worth a video on its own! Hopefully you'll be able to make another trip out to see the air show. If you do, you can take your wife to some pretty interesting places if she's interested in history. There's Mystic Seaport in Mystic Connecticut, Old Sturbridge village in Sturbridge Massachusetts and the Owls Head transportation museum up in Maine. If you do decide to come back, DM me! Tony

In the video you refer to the engine manual, where can I find it?

I agree Greg. If he had only fought the Wright's patents without trying to prove that others flew controllably first, it would have been ok. And let's remember Wright and Curtiss became Curtiss-Wright after WWI. So, it's kind of a mute point after all.

I’m of two minds regarding Curtis’ breaking the Wright’s patents. On the one hand, of course, it was a dirty trick and the Wright’s clearly achieved several true breakthroughs in powered heavier-than-air flight, and deserved those patents. On the other hand breaking the parents allowed many others to make real advances in aircraft design. In a perfect world something like what happened with Daguerre when he invented the first practical photography system would have happened to the Wrights—they’d have gotten the recognition and a tidy sum in the form a pension or something, and the patents would have been made freely available. In the circumstances part of me thinks this was the next best outcome.

What bothers me most about the Wright Bros is the impression that once they'd perfected their Flyers and demonstrated their mastery in Paris in 1908, they just sat back and expected the world to beat a path to their door. I don't know of any contributions they made to aeronautics after then. I can sort of understand Orville not doing much after Wilbur died in 1912, but that's still four years of nothing, and I think the Europeans and even Glenn Curtis were advancing more in aeronautics by 1912. Maybe I'm wrong and need to learn more about them, but all they have going for them now is an Air Force base and an engine company.

In Omaka Blenheim, New Zealand we have an excellent exhibition of WW1 fighters thanks to Sir Peter Jackson (director of Lord of the rings). Well worth a visit . Very interested to see videos on WW1 aero engines. Best

Old Rhinebeck is on the other end of the state for me but I have to get there someday. There usually is a good showing of WW I planes at ‘The Greatest Show on Turf’ during the annual Geneseo Airshow at The National Warplane Museum.

I was already convinced that the wright brothers deserved the credit, but videos you put up in your their defense not only shut the door on the Langley arguments but also bolted it closed and added cross bars!

I had no idea they was controversy about that until I heard you mention it in another video!
