Bonus Video: Good Scansion (PPT Party)
Hey team!
For my birthday last month, I threw a PowerPoint Party. I had friends give 10-to-15-minute presentations on a niche topic of their interest: I got presentations on Top 5 Gayest Team Sports, Penguins of the Falkland Islands, Pro Wrestlers as Watercolor Paper, and A Crash Course on Modern Solar Energy.
This is a (semi-faithful) recreation of the keynote address that I gave on poetic meter.
WARNING: PARTS OF THIS MAY BE CRINGE.
[note: this version is slightly different from the one I am uploading to Nebula: the original contained footage from the 1978 film adaptation of Watership Down, but YouTube copyright flagged it so aggressively that it was blocked in the US and Canada; so I've replaced the YouTube version with stills. it is otherwise unchanged.]

I absolutely adored this video. It took me back to high school Latin class where we scanned a ton of Virgil. Also whenever a phrase is a dactyl+trochee I sing it like Eleanor Rigby
"dactyl and troche" scans with "Eleanor Rigby"
First saw this on Nebula, and it's amazing! And I do love the idea of a Powerpoint party, although I doubt I could come up with something this creative.
We teach some of this to our linguistics undergrads and one of the TAs rightly pointed out Megamind's "Metrócìty", which works doubly well because the wrong scansion changes the vowel quality. Also agree with the comments above that hey you can sing too?
kind of
Wow wow I see you left out one of the presentations from the list 🥲 😝
I couldn't remember how to spell "boricuir" (is that even it???)
I love this so incredibly much, especially as someone who was a child superfan of Watership down. This superpower of yours is fantastic, I am sure great at parties, and I feel very lucky to be included in an audience for it.
I'm an aussie, and during covid's peak the QLD Premier was a woman named Annastacia palaszczuk (Pal-oo-chez) which scans PERFECTLY with Alexander Hamilton, horrifyingly for me to realise (I don't know if she's still the qld premier?? Can't remember. There was a lot of interstate conflict at the time so they were all over)
Ages ago on Twitter, there was a bit of a meme for putting names to the scansion of Eleanor Rigby. That's one I see everywhere now. Agatha Cristie, Christopher Nolan, Geoff from Accounting. And of course there's this other favourite: https://xkcd.com/1412/
I am also a fan of double dactyl poems about Benedict Cumberbatch: https://ericlippert.com/2013/09/06/higgledy-piggledy/ (check the comments for examples)
Love it. I am a scansion pedant, too. I used to follow a twitter account that was limericks of new stories. They were very good. The account generously RTed if a follower sent them their own limerick. And NONE of them ever scanned o_O Nice singing voice, bro.
I understood that editing suicide squad reference
(Dan did not invent the emPHASis/syLLABle joke, I think I first heard Mike Myers say it in a movie trailer)
You're not the only one who suffers like this. At work, a lot of non native speakers pronounce REmote and REquest (and any other word starting we "re") as troche, and it drives me up the walls. I very much enjoyed this video.
Ah yes, those minor, hyper-niche superpowers that are just noticing a thing that is meant to go unnoticed. I've gotten really good at identifying "frankenbites" (the bits of audio dialogue that are cut up and spliced back together to form lines the person never said, and are especially prominent in movie trailers and reality TV) and now I cannot turn it off. Bringing things back to scansion, my high school English teacher taught us about meter and scansion by having us sing Emily Dickinson's "Because I could not stop for Death" to the tune of the Gilligan's Island theme.
do you ever notice my frankenbites? I have, on occasion, had to splice in a re-record or cut two takes of the same line together mid-syllable, and some of them stand out REALLY OBVIOUSLY to me but I don't know if anyone else catches them. (I'm always proudest when even *I* can't hear the edit.)
I love the idea of a PowerPoint party
I may steal this birthday idea. This sounds wild.
(Are you on Mastodon at all?)
soon
OOOHH. THAT'S what iambic pentameter is! ::head splodey:: Weirdly enough, the person who hipped me to scansion was my Latin teacher. Sadly, I don't remember the precise context, and I have a neural deficit where poetry (& lyrics, sadly) is concerned so I never followed it up. But I do have a vague "feeling" for it, so this is absolutely fascinating. And also brilliant. (What? The boy SINGS? TOO??) Also also: Now *I* want to have a PPT party..... ::think emoji::
Your a-scansion to poetry bro is now complete
When Saurya and I do to our favorite taqueria, he gets the Shrimp Quesadilla, which we now sing to the tune of "Guantanamera" 🎵
"I'll eat a shrimp quesadilla" does scan PERFECTLY with "guajira Guantanamera"
I now want to learn more about scansion
