Britainology 79: UK Garage feat. Dan Hancox
For this month's first Britainology, we're joined by music journalist and genre aficionado Dan Hancox, the author of 'Inner City Pressure: the Story of Grime.' But we're not talking about Grime today (that'll come later!)—rather, we're talking about a genre close to Milo's heart, the Essex-born-and-raised '90s/'00s subgenre Garage. Which Nate has absolutely no point of reference for whatsoever, despite being the exact right age to have been a fan...if only he were British.

i mean u made this podcast 6 years AFTER the tories legalised weed so not the most prescient prediction😋
Was the playlist Dan mentions ever created? I'd love to hear it!
I've always said UKG shares many characteristics with Thai food: sweet, spicy, funky, a peak of human cultural achievement that couldn't have developed anywhere other than where it did,
This was v good
I, an East Coast, GenX WW, LOVED The Streets. But I was also in performance poetry/slam world at the time, so yeah
also like, look, I get where you're coming from, but I'm gonna make the case that G-Funk is *the* black, "controversial" cultural product that made it full mainstream: Dre and Snoop did the Super Bowl Halftime Show
there's gotta be something in the like indoor geometry of british clubs that make you people enjoy a 45hz sine wave bass. Not that there's anything wrong with that but it's so unique and prevalent...
Finally something to listen to while sorting my white label 2-step garage and dubstep dubplates
Digital Mystikz, Deep Medi, Tempa, Hyperdub, the list goes on
I never really knew much about UK music outside of crust punk so this was very educational for me. I listened to this and then spent the next three hours of my shift listening to garage
When is Dan Hancox gonna write the grimoire that summons the entirety of the Blazin' Squad?
Great ep or to quote DJ Pied Piper and the Master of Ceremonies - we're lovin it lovin it lovin it, we're lovin it like this
In the late 90s / early 00s as a Drum and Bass fan, I used to be an awful snob about Garage. I used to borrow my mate’s Stush tape packs for the jungle sets (which were often in the back rooms of Garage raves). My curiosity got the better of me and I listened to some of the garage sets too. I went from “I only like breakbeat garage, like DJ Zinc”, to “I guess the El-b dark stuff is good too” to “Holy shit, I like Garage!”
this episode was charming as fuck, UKG forever
I gave my friends a sampling of The Streets and they made fun of it with limp wrists while spoken wording "I'm a tosser. I'm a tosser." I always wondered why they didn't regard it as highly as I did, which is to say interesting in a "let him cook" kind of way. Now I know it was some kind of cilantro/soap gene that made them that way.
In the early 2000s I worked the register at a U.S. chain store that sold music and there was a period of time where the marketing team pushed Craig David. From my foggy memories, he seemed to have some listeners in the "I watch VH1" set. They also pushed The Streets for a minute, but that never really took with anyone. This has been your report from the fringes of the anglosphere.
I lost it at "he's since renounced god" and the immediate aftermath. Cheers.
Gotta be one of my fave episodes. Great listen guys
A few years back i stayed in a geodesic dome on a canal in a beach town in Delaware. Had a big night, woke up hungover, walked out on the deck, which overlooked the canal, to smoke a cig with my friend, who was also hungover. We silently watched as a leathery boomer man (shirtless, of course) paddled by on a standup paddleboard which had a boombox on it playing “Judith” by A Perfect Circle. My opinion of the band increased somewhat after that experience
I regularly revisit that Todd Edwards footage. Such a pure moment of utter joy
Another piece of UK Garage related ephemera I come back to regularly. Mike Skinner is a true national treasure https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Ue1U9Se6jQI
There's a pretty good series on the Channel 5 service on the evolution of UK Garage to Grime, lots of interviews with the people who were there
As a dancer who regularly dances to UKG and genres usually associated, so here for this. Just as soon as I finish listening to the defence economics slideshow. Also, when Jungle?
I’ll second “when jungle?”
45:40 HW Bush's line was specifically "We are going to keep on trying to strengthen the American family, to make American families a lot more like the Waltons and a lot less like the Simpsons"
Yep and IIRC the Simpson writers retorted on a subsequent show, while referring to what them seemed like a bad recession, with Homer saying “we are just like the Waltons - sitting around waiting for the depression to end”.
I admit, I hoped this was going to be about middle aged UK men's garages
The sit down that happened after the schism between roller and bifold door producers was the event the future of the genre hinged on
Oh hell yeah
