As A Large Language Howitzer,

It's the free one!

For this week’s free episode, Riley, Milo, Hussein, and Nate discuss the recent news that ChatGPT has both dropped its official guidelines around working with weapons systems and also entered into a partnership with the U.S. Department of Defense. This is notionally to help reduce veteran suicide, but as Riley indicates, there are plenty of combat uses that are probably going to get integrated, even (or especially) if they’re bad. We also do a quick UK politics check (did you know populism is over in the UK?) and discuss a Spectator article yearning for a Tory government willing to change everything back to imperial units.

Couple years on and we double tapped an elementary school, claimed reason being because they asked AI for a list of valid military target coordinates in Iran.

If a linguist did translation the way ChatGPT does, I'm pretty sure that's an actual crime under the UCMJ

"there's a lot of good there in terms of how we can use large language models to disrupt critical functions across the department." He might want to rephrase that one, cause I think it was more accurate than he intended.

USPS is only still nationalized by the skin of is teeth and the fact that it's mentioned in the US Constitution that the government should be running it.

oh right it's the agency that got ratfucked by Bush being forced to guarantee its pensions 50 years in advance, a standard that is highly irrealistic and expected of basically no other organization or corporation anywhere?

Just a thought : if a truly intelligent AI is developed and it's used to treat depression and mental health... What if it develops those as well? What can diagnose and threat a suicidalGPT? Another GPT?

canada is a great example of a place that half-adopted metric. for example, I worked doing rebar and lenghts and spacings on the blueprints were all in feet but the bar widths and a lot of the standard bar lenghts were metric. So for example, a lot of situation would call for a 29 feet 6 inch long bar at 10 or 15mm, spaced at 16 inch. Took me longer than I'd like to admit to figure out that twenty nine six actually means exactly 9 meters but I think canada has a better excuse here specifically in the domain of construction because every dimension follows imperial standards. 16 inch wall framing, 8 feet tall walls along with 8x4 drywall sheets, and everything derived from those fundamental constants of the universe. Converting to metric as-is would mean people would spell out way too verbose unround milimeter dimensions; converting to round metric standards would cause a hard compatibility break with all the existing stuff, and more importantly it would cause a hard incompatibility break with the USA, which is our biggest trade market and basically the same country as us in a lot of respects going out of our way to enforce metric everywhere if the US doesn't would be in many ways the *opposite* move as the UK reverting to imperial as it continues trading with the metric EU block and rest of the world

E
Elsie Hupp · January 25, 2024

I mean the US government uses “imperial metric”, which is a weird, decimalized approximation of metric that’s actually three feet and change wearing a trench coat. (Personally I’ve found that 40 inches is a nice approximation of a meter for architectural design. It doesn’t quite work with US plywood and drywall sizes, but it works better for a lot of things than 36 inches does.)

As we all know, freedom is about whether you get to use old timey measurements developed by some insane natural philosopher in the 16th century, and not whether you have the right to openly express your opposition to a genocide.

I’ve had a pint of wine in the white hart in Aldgate E or thereabouts. They had it on tap and we thought it would be funny to order 6 pints of Prosecco. The bartender decanted from a Prosecco glass into the pints and charged us for like 15 glasses. They had to change the “barrel” (sack) twice. Nobody died.

The fundamental problem with doing AI for military intelligence is that it's going to be trained primarily on things saying that you should bomb stuff, so when you ask it a question it will always tell you to bomb something
