Shrinkflation for the Arts
For this week's regular TF bonus, Riley, Milo, Hussein, and Alice discuss a startup from Brisbane, Australia that sees a way forward for video game voice actors: make AI do it, but worse. We also discuss a recent announcement that you can get NFTs inside your Mercedes for some reason.

I can't wait for the art with no artist for no audience
Ethical ai bonus voice?
I'm agreeing with Rocz more and more that Yudkowski was right about exactly one thing and we should start doing that as widely as possible. The Luddites would've had better results with MQ-9s than hammers
Can we just close the loop to the inevitable endpoint that's just a CEO telling a computer to print him some money, since that's what they really want anyway? And at least if we do it that way he can get caught for forgery
The XL bully of cars
Milo doing AI voices... Damn funny, the weird inflections are so unnerving I prefer robotic synthesised voices than AI ones. Miku lives!
"Masayoshi Son's oubliette" is so fucking good
Not to be too revelatory, but the only useful information conveyed by county property tax assessments in California is the percentage value of the land versus the building in a particular parcel.
prop 13 babeyyyy!
Milo audibly restraining himself from saying that Masayoshi-san lives in the ~Heart of the Machine~
Something I find very strange about the entire generative AI industry's pitch to the videogame industry is that it's very easily out maneuvered by much smaller teams of creatives with smaller budgets who are even sometimes willing to pay voice actors more than a AAA studio and sell at lower prices to less alienated fans. Even successful games that involve large amounts of procedural generation still have very intentional and thoughtful design and art (which AI is incapable of).
How much to commission Milo and Alice to record voice lines for a Starfield companion replacement mod?
Riley looking more and more puzzled as the third NPC he encounters in his game is talking about being banished to the lagoon for trying to create a more equitable society
So SAG-AFTRA is collaborating with the people turning an entire career into a single gig
Unfortunately, the existence of Hatsune Miku and the Vocaloid fandom proves that a fandom for an AI-generated voice is not only possible but probably inevitable.
I don't think Vocaloids are "AI" in this sense, in terms of how they work (there's a lot more legwork involved, I think?) and in terms of how they're used (you might like the Hatsune Miku voice, but you're just as likely to be, say, a Crusher-P fan or Hachi fan, to name a couple of Vocaloid composers/songwriteres)
As a shameless TTRPG nerd, I gotta say... why do people think these are popular if Generative AI is the future?
Because they think that all content is a fungible commodity. That it's all interchangeable, replaceable and equal. It's not. The mindset of someone who only cared about the bottom line and the numbers. No need for writers or illustrators to generate slop for the... Checks notes... Ttrpg market.
Here's something you didn't mention in your discussion of AI. There's a huge, hidden cost associated with it. Training an AI model, or even generating a result from a prompt, takes tons of computing power. That has a measurable dollar cost associated with it. It recently came out that OpenAI was losing money with every ChatGPT inquiry. You previously noted how ChatGPT seemed to be "lazy" now and instead of generating a hundred of something when asked, it only generated single-digit amounts. That's not something with the model. That's something OpenAI put in themselves to limit the amount of processing power used on any given query. It's also why Sam Altman recently called out for fusion power to make the energy costs of running an AI model financially viable. Because it can't work if you have to use actual technology rather than scifi pipe dreams. While money might no longer be free, it's still very cheap by historical standards. And the hype cycle around AI is allowing them to get around having to show actual revenue (at least for right now). One of the reasons OpenAI sold out to Microsoft was to get access to all the Azure infrastructure at essentially no cost. If every time a player in a game talks to an NPC there is a financial cost incurred by the owners/operators of said game, then that game isn't financially viable. You wouldn't even save any money generating a script and using AI to make a generated list of responses. That's still a really expensive proposition.
Given the gaming industry, they'd find some way shunt that cost to the player through microtransactions. I'd hope it wouldn't work, but they're pretty good about abusing the neuro-atypical.
guys just so you know: A resident of Brisbane is a “Brisbanite” which rhymes with “shite” (in the scottish way), just letting you know to open your guys up to all the possible ways to make fun of our city
I am also easily tricked, Reilly, I feel you man.
lol I used to drive an Audi A3 😝 got my ass
Emissions. The biggest problem with cars is unquestionably emissions. It’s not close. Hatchback/SUV? wrong 🚫👎👎 Milo whiffed big on the first pitch.
All of this just makes me think that the current state of the arts was accurately predicted by "Phillipsvision" on the Critic in 1994. "Some pretentious weirdo director mucks up a great movie with a downer ending. I use a bunch of computers and put it back the way God intended."
Regarding California property taxes: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1978_California_Proposition_13 This is also why California has unusually high income taxes (to compensate for the lack of property taxes).
Yeah... Feel like Baldur's Gate 3 will be the equivalent of "the last CD Album I bought". Its truly a shame. Not only the voice acting, also the gameplay feels like it was made by people who just want you to have a good time. Its like 2004 brought us one last gift. What gaming could have become without the monetization maximization bullshit. Now most games might as well be made by an AI. Man, I wanted to become a game developer back in those days. Imagine that...
I hold out hope. There are always going to be AA and smaller indie devs making games because they want to create something good and thankfully so long as these AAA ghouls want to continue to shaft players in terms of user experience, and so long as platforms such as Steam are receptive to smaller developers still, there is always going to be a market.
I did not realize that Milo was veritable gaming icon Tommy Tallarico.

Anti smoking action really heightened the vomit/piss/garbage stink of Fortitude Valley which is why I went exclusively to Goth and Gay Clubs.
As a sound designer who directs ADR actors I agree that apart from the job killing aspects of this I don’t think this can actually practically work for anything but the most low-tier material. When we use material like this it’s often only because the actor in question is unavailable or dead. It’s simply too hard to get it to sound human without just having an actor do it and then the AI overlays a voice model, but at a certain point that’s not really AI either.
Also it’s completely possible that SAG-AFTRA has a special agreement with this one company to pay through a per-use residual to its voice actors, but we don’t know that, I’d be curious to see what they terms it offers to game developers are. But Abby is totally right that it’s not practical for a AAA-tier game where the VAs are stars and part of the package.
MBS would jump at the option to live in silicon valley doing VC tech funding in exile while a regime change takes place in SA
Would it be as sad and pathetic as the ex-shah’s later life?

I hate living in a my brother, my brother and me :(
This is the guy I saw on Facebook claiming that AI should be available for people who couldn't afford to commission art. It's a pretence that it's more democratic than being a Medici and that AI is the Gutenberg press replacing the scriptorium rather than replacing the author.
I mean I have been seeing plenty of AI art in the wild specifically as stock illustrations for blog posts and YouTube videos. And not even disreputable bloggers and YouTubers at that! e.g. Patrick McKenzie’s Bits About Money, which went from being text-only to being text-only but with AI-illustration hero images to jazz up social thumbnails: https://www.bitsaboutmoney.com/archive/
A Saturday bonus, yay!
