Britainology 77: Save Our XL Bullies feat. Hussein Kesvani

For this month's first Britainology, we bring on Hussein Kesvani—our special guest with whom we've never done another podcast—to discuss the recent UK Government ban on XL Bully dogs, British dog ownership culture in general, kissing your dog on the mouth, and much more.

Please enjoy the attached images which are all the ones we discussed on the episode—Milo found them in the wild.

Why DOES Britainology have Wario Land: Shake It! for the Nintendo Wii music? It fucks but why

Weird take to just be like, fuck animal cruelty laws because I don't like mice?

It’s literally a Seinfeld episode already. Jerry accidentally knocks his girlfriend’s toothbrush in the toilet and doesn’t tell her and then won’t kiss her

It's true never fight a shirtless man in winter. They're either gakked to the gills and/or don't care that they're cold

This episode was pretty offensive about Travellers and perpetuated the stereotype that all Traveller men are violent. Maybe don’t make assumptions like that, pretty fucked up honestly. Especially the part at 5:40. Really disappointing

Not trying to take sides but gawd this episode reminded me of this news story: https://www.9news.com.au/world/woman-killed-after-attack-by-sausage-dogs-in-us/b7de3ad1-7834-4bb7-9163-5801c2c168fe

Conflating Stand By Me and The Sandlot has been the highlight of my day so far. Thank you.

T
Trashfuture · January 20, 2024

the lore of Stand By Me is that Milo Pressman's dog Chopper is a huge monster who is specifically trained to bite your dick off, but then it is revealed that he's actually a small dog. In the psychic space of the imaginary, Chopper could be an XL Bully and therefore the allusion is accurate

It's Me Or The Dog (Season 1) would be the perfect accompaniment to this episode. Fucked BritVibes.

all of this really reminds me of that weird time bubble in the Syrian civil war when ISIS would post selfies holding cats (hallal) and YPG would post selfies holding dogs (haram)

We looked after a very lovely, friendly, well-trained Weimeraner that belonged to a rich family in Bath growing up. She was obedient, was a little anxious but never barked, and pranced like she was in a Disney movie when we went on walks. We joked about her practically being human. That said, she was still a dog, so ate Actual shit quite often, can't imagine going as far as pecking a dog on the lips.

I’m an American with a Pit Bull/German Shepherd mix who we rescued as a puppy. She is jet black with a bark that terrifies people. As someone who regularly plays on her level and will even open her jaws with my hands to steal toys, I absolutely trust her 100% (even though I’m aware her fear response could make her bite me). She’s also incredibly gentle with our 4yo and 1yo children and nuzzles them constantly, and she just runs away if they pull her tail or hit her. That said, she hates strangers and barks her head off at anyone who’s not her owners. I don’t think she would bite a person but it’s certainly possible. She absolutely hates other dogs and has bitten several who were unlucky enough to run through our yard while she was outside. TL;DR, breeds don’t determine behavior alone, but dogs are obviously animals with instincts that are hard to override. It’s less a genetics issue than a situation-dependent issue.

I think you hit the nail on the head with the sentiment "I feel like I'm being punished for somebody else's problem"

R
Raymond Price · January 19, 2024

Yeah, and that also applies to guns in the USA. "I'm a good and responsible gun owner, so I should be allowed to carry an Uzi to pick up my kid at school."

Some dogs are doomed from birth by the what their breeding achieved. With bullies xl you get the peak physical capabilities and the short fuse you might need for a defense dog. It's not the dog for a city or a heavy populated area. Other breeds are made to look "cute" (note the air quotes) but will suffer tremendous pain and agony ( Pugs asphyating, Datschungs back problems, etc). If you can, adopt. At least you're not paying a breeder directly. And in some countries to promote adoption they help with the fees and vaccines of the little ball of hair.

Love the picture of XL Bully Valhalla, where the biggest dog is served in the afterlife by all the infants and smaller dogs he killed in life.

H
Helio Perroni Filho · January 18, 2024

I know that the problem with XL bullies is down to genetics, and there's no definitive solution other than eradicating the breed — but still, I cannot help but feel a little bad for them. They're just irrational creatures, thrown into a world they don't understand, suffering for no fault of their own.

J

This episode reminded me that the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children was formed out of the already well established RSPCA. Presumably out of embarrassment that they were fighting to protect the rights of working animals before there were rights for working children.

J
Josh Redcliffe · January 18, 2024

Came accross an XLbully walking our dogs a few months ago. It was being walked by its owners mum because he didn't want the attention an XLbully would get him any more. It was only a puppy and was trying to be friendly with small dogs, which were terrified because it was like 3 times their size, but this woman could NOT have controlled it if it had decided it wanted to attack something. It was pulling her all over the place despite her using her whole bodyweight to try and stop it. Like, at least a gun doesn't have the unknowable free will to just suddenly flip and unload a magazine.

m
meta · January 18, 2024

I cannot believe we don’t automatically euthanize any dog that attacks or kills a person. These poor dogs are inbred and unnecessary and have been bred into being barely even dogs (which are meant to protect and be relied on).

m
meta · January 18, 2024

Also re: the perception that hating put bills is racist in the U.S., people bizarrely take their guilt around America’s racist history and being white and think that adopting a goddamn pit bull absolves them of that guilt.

O

O
Oliver Cant · January 18, 2024

It's very hard for me to take the word of Bully owners that, "they're just widdle smol beans that have done nothing wrong" and then you ask what the dog's name is and they say, "Search & Destroy".

There is always weird overlaps between british and swiss culture. Not only did the british get our old national anthem. It is normal here to just put your glass on an other table, depending on the context. Like, you never do it in a restaurant. And you can be nice about it. But open-air bars which are busy? Sure! There is the bar, and the waiter who only walks around and collects glasses. I've done it, people did it to me, and I never wasted a thought about it.

T
Trashfuture · January 24, 2024

imagine a small table that barely seats two people, indoors, at a very crowded pub on a Friday night, and imagine just stashing your empty pint glasses on that small table while two people are sitting there. Seems a bit rude, even when accounting for the fact that Brits are just insanely rude to each other on a constant basis

My parents had several rescued dogs, largely from my sister, and one was a pure bred pit bull and they had a doberman mixed with a bully of some variety. My sister also had a pure bred german shepherd. The GSD didn't live there all the time but the other 2 did. They had a perfectly fine relationship for several years until one day when I was house sitting while my parents were out of town. I was at work, and the pit bull got out of her cage at some point and got into a fight with the doberman. When I got home, both of them were covered in dried blood, but since the doberman mix was still in her cage they both mostly just shredded each other but didn't do any severe wounds. They got into at least 4 other fights, a couple with the GSD. Sometimes they had to get stitches but they never attacked a human, or showed any kind of aggression towards us. The only dog that actually bit a person was my sister's GSD that bit my mom on the arm who then needed stitches. When the 2 bullies would fight, it would be that locking bite, and the smaller pit bull more often did more severe damage to the doberman/bully mix by locking onto the other dog's neck and chest. Despite all this, the pit bull was the nice dog to the 4 other dogs under 40 pounds they also had at the time. The most pets we had at one time was 7 dogs, 5 cats, and a chameleon. 4 of the dogs are still alive, most are quite old now. One of the cats is still alive and she is also very old and diabetic but most died tragically, never from a dog.

something i don't think a lot of people realize abt uk xl bullies specifically is that kimbo a) is related to like 50% of all the bullies there, and b) has/had rage syndrome afaik, which is a genetic predisposition to sudden, unsignaled aggression and is almost certainly why uk xl bullies are Like That

I'M SORRY YOU HAVE AN EMOTIONAL ATTACHMENT TO THIS CAT AND THAT YOU FEEL SURPRISED THAT IT'S AGING AND SICK. IT'S A CAT

Years ago I was out with friends in a pub (converted Georgian mansion) that was ~90% standing room, maybe 100 people and one 4-tap bar. People were leaving glasses in plant-pots, the jacks, wherever. We were standing in the middle of the main, can't really call it 'lounge' per se, so we didn't even have a wall to lean them against and it was ten minutes' queueing *just to put the glasses on the bar*. All of which is to say, I put my empty glass on someone's table without asking because it's not actually their table? It's the pub's? They didn't bring it in with them? Who cares? But man, did the guy (one guy, two girls) care. He cared a lot. Tapped me on the shoulder after I went back to my people - I turned around, immediately comprehended his purpose and mouthed "I don't care" to him - he left it at my feet. A staff member grabbed it shortly afterwards. All that intro and expo to make this claim: I was right; the guy was a dumbass and it's actually fine to do that, ty for reading my blog.
