Britainology 73: Britain's All-Time Hardest Bastards
It's Dave Courtney in memoriam month on Britainology for November and as a result we have got two episodes for you, honouring the man himself by delving into the concept of the hard geezer. In this first of two episodes, Milo offers Nate a selection of Britain's all time hardest bastards for his delectation. Later in the month the boys will be consuming Danny Dyer's Deadliest Men.
Are you in Barcelona? Come see Milo's stand-up on Friday 24 November!

You two goofs buried the lede on Wiley! What a name!! Charles Hotham Montagu Doughty-Wylie!!
Super late to this discussion, but as someone from El Paso, TX; the Morrissey thing is because he’s very much a troubadour whose style can be compared to older cancíon ranchera artists like Pedro Infante and contemporary pop/traditional crossover artists like Juan Gabriel. The lyrics are emotionally vulnerable, and this appeals to our community across the spectrum of subcultures and tastes. You are as likely to find a Smiths album in the collection of a chero (rancher) as you are a cholo or a hipster. I attended a concert in EP over a decade ago where the front row of dudes (all cheros) were were crying as they sang along. One asked to hug the Morrissey. He was allowed onstage, he hugged for too long, and the show was terminated.
the greasing himself up thing is a move from enders game
You really should watch Scum
Birmingham Alabama has become one of the worst cities in terms of murder in America recently
You do get the impression that with Bronson he has been utterly brutalised by the prison system. He's not a good man and he can't be trusted, but it's hard to not have a bit of sympathy.
As someone whose dad is an east end geezer that loves Dali, that bit felt too close to home.
This reminded me of the movie Tough Guys starring Kirk Douglas and Burt Lancaster. Quality 80s movie
Lenny strikes me as something of a British Miyamoto Musashi
Can somoene link the videos for a tired person
Nothing has down more to change my notion of what Britain is than a show called Toughest Seaside Resorts in Britain.
Brits driving pickup trucks is a sign of the apocalypse
Surprised Jimmy Boyle didn’t make the list.
Only place I've been punched in the face - Shoreditch lol
I went to uni in Stoke-on-Trent. Don't go to Stoke-on-Trent.
I grew up 15 minutes from Stoke-on-Trent. I endorse this statement wholeheartedly.
Jaaa. Nate is so checked out of Britain.
Re: Anne Bonny and perceived gender: this is actually really interesting! There’s a strong line of historical argument that at about that time a lot of English-speaking societies were basically concerned with people fitting into roles as either men or women, and as long as you accepted and adhered to one of these gendered roles people weren’t necessarily that worried about, like, knowing your “true” sex or gender or ASAB or whatever. This has a ton of caveats, of course, and if someone’s physical body was officially “discovered” in some way not to “match” their presentation that often went . . . not well for them socially and sometimes also legally. But it’s an interesting area of historical research, and ideas about gender at the time (like ideas of a bunch of stuff) seem to have tended to just be less concerned with the idea of a “true” or internal identity than we are today.
Thinking especially of James Barry in comparison to Anne Bonny.
A new bit I just thought of would to do a hard man crime film, but for white collar crime. Danny Dyer and his gang of hard men in suits planning an elaborate scheme to rinse a VC of all his money but then it goes horribly wrong. All still with the geezer talk but they're all talking about complex financial instruments.
The thing about Anne Boney was that she was also sleeping with the captain. Did the other pirates think she was a twink.
Is Lenny a magnetic fields fan??? That’s hilarious
Honorable mention: mad jack churchill
Ups and downs strikes and gutters lol
Fuck me, Bottom is perfect Britainology fodder. Like a 90-minute ep where 15 minutes is actually about Bottom and the rest is context/tangents, would be lit.
the young ones deserves an episode too i think. fuck it, just do a whole rik mayall episode
Fully huffing on that thing
Anybody got a link to the Bouncer documentary? Where are these notes?
There’s a Mexican morriesy cover band with mariachi horns I saw in California a few years ago
It’s not a bit! My friend genuinely owns an album of mariachi covers of Morrissey songs, called Mexrissey. El Primero Del Gang is surprisingly catchy
Austin TX has roundabouts now and nobody knows what to do with them, probably in part though because most of them are in extremely arbitrary places, like one block in the middle of a residential neighborhood with a two lane street.
Pom-pom is an onomatopoeia for something that kills your horribly- in this case, 1 pounder (37mm) cannons. I couldn't find whether the Ottomans had any in their arsenal at Gallipoli, but whatever they were shooting was bigger than a normal machine gun.
Pom-poms were clip fed rapid fire guns, developed to engage torpedo boats from cruisers and battleships.
Pouring one out for the flattest nose geezer
Having gone to uni just by stoke, that's fucking right it's an absolutely sick night out, I have witnessed feats of combat that would have earned a medieval serf a knighthood on the spot
Delighted to hear the return of Nate's Morrissey impression.
I went to Uni at Keele which is the university next to Stoke-on-Trent and most people did go on nights out in Stoke but once was normally enough for most
When I heard that he died, my first thought was, I need the TrashFuture episode about this
Hey, it's Nate!
can't believe he's really gone, fucks me up to even think about
Rest in peace Dave Courtney, my hawk , my North Star
