I Hate This Steampunk Dystopia
Riley, Alice, and Hussein review some of the developments in the wide world of British pet ownership and a return to Victorian levels of dog-maulings to accompany the return of Victorian diseases, then we look at a startup that's reinventing a train but worse, and then read all about how Liz Truss thinks that getting rid of Boris Johnson was the wrong thing to do. Riley uncovers an awful hidden talent.

2 years later, and, still no automated trucks!
It actually makes perfect sense that Liz Truss wants Boris back, the few weeks before he finally resigned marked the absolute (personal) high points of being a Tory that make you climb to that position in the first place. Permanent Viziermoding. If Truss had her way she wouldn't even be in power, someone with her identical policies would be in Number 10 and she would get to spend eternity giddily sharpening the knife behind them.
"Michael Vick played the wrong kind of football." My imagination is running wild now, thank you. Anyway, domesticated wolves don't kill people, people kill people by poorly training and maintaining their domesticated wolves.
"use these trucks that can drive themselves on roads that have other people on it all reacting individually" ok radical idea, what if we put these trucks on their own individual roads, so we know all of where they could be, and can control quite granularly the precise way in which it moves to perhaps improve efficiency and allow for faster movement for more of the journey, and also no longer really need fuel cuz we can then add the fuel to the roads themselves, perhaps electricity cuz thats nice and environment, and then we got a lot of them in a row and so we only need one thing driving it, and what if we called it something new, instead of trucks we call them like uhhhh, TRAINS Edit: This was my earnest first reaction the second riley said automated trucks and im glad to feel vindicated
The CEO of the company I work for has those "fireside chats" every month. It's definitely some Business Secrets of the Pharaohs management consultant stuff that has spread through the c suite class. Our CEO also ends these chats, every time, with "peace out"
Those Chief Blockchain Officers seem like they won the booby prize of crypto. Like, you won the scam game so hard that you were then chained to that specific scam. All the smaller fries just did a lift and shift of the "take my course" grift to AI. At least it seems so from the slate of obvious scam ads that youtube has been serving up to me of late. And I do suspect the payouts are going to be better for AI scammers.
Excellent AYAOTD ref. Hopefully the Greensill news is going to be about Panthera Global Activated Carbon, a totally legit start up in every way.
Ya'll write a law against inbred monsters that atomize children and the humane society will come round and put down the royal family
11 years a postie and everytime a dog looses at me (about 20 times a day) I just intone the mantra "you'll get me one day mate but not today"
Pitbull Discourse™ is virtually the only issue that isn't attached to the wider culture war that people will fight to the death over
The largest problem with dangerous dog breeds is the fact that their reputation for strength makes them more likely to be owned by total cretins. The sort who don't understand how to get a dog to not pull them around on the leash without resorting to physical punishment. Or the classic perma-drunk couple who can't train themselves let alone a dog. Not disputing their potential for danger though, I've had a few dangerous dog breeds (or even just large dogs) and you always have to be proactive with safety training, if you're going to let them off the leash you have to be good at recall training. The thing is non dog owners don't notice a badly trained small terrier because it can't kill an adult or scare them with the threat of such. If people were as interested in all dog owners training skills as they were for Pitbulls there would be less dog related violence, especially with the moronic ideas 1st time dog owners have; Hence the stories of dogs of ALL breeds tearing off kids faces after the unforgivably clueless owner abuses them and then leaves the dog in a room with a forgivably ignorant child. Chihuahuas are some of the worst for this yet any grown adult could throw one across a room with ease. Its almost like people set themselves up for this shit with their own ignorance, the difference in breeds merely accounts for the size of what the dog can kill.
I heard a statistic once that dachshunds are the most likely to bite someone but yeah, nobody's gonna worry about who wins in that fight like they do with a bully.
Obligatory pit defense. My boi is named radar, he has a really dumb smile and is scared of spatulas and big bushes. My previous dog was also a pit, who I would walk off leash, because she was very good with commands and would avoid other dogs. Both of them were adopted from shelters where unwanted bully breeds were at risk of being put down. No excuses for inbreeding and puppy farming but my boi is a fuckin marshmallow
Pitbulls are great and fuck all doubters. The real umbrage should be applied to their moron owners who abuse them and leave them unattended around children. People who chat shit about dangerous dog breeds have no idea what they're talking about, any dog can be dangerous if the owner is stupid & lazy in their training.
Riley's comparison of the dogs to american trucks/cars is apt because "American Bully XL" is a truck-ass name for a breed.
honestly for the first several minutes of that conversation I thought they were talking about a car model
I had a pit bull that was like 50 lbs when I was a teenager, we found it on the side of the creek and didn't know it's breed. She was almost mostly just a ball of fat and actually had a pretty small head and frame. We lived in a rural area anyway. Nobody should get a large dog generally unless you have a yard with a fence in any case. They don't have good quality of life in an apartment, at least if you can't walk them enough.
I did not get the dog for protection, it always made me cringe when anyone would imply that.
I feel kinda called out on the whole dog as protection thing. I now have at least one kid. If they question their gender, I am seriously considering a big dog. Fluffy, because the future sucks and you need a friend. And Big, because... You know, the news... I don't want to give them a gun. Its a danger to my kid and the people around them too. But I do feel the need to give my kid some kind of protection, and I feel like a big dog is a big one. Well, I guess the difference is I would actually want to train the dog. And have it be a loved member of the family. Still, maybe I need to have a think about what I believe
Hi so something to think about: if someone’s going to break into your home they’re going to see “dog” or “no dog” and maybe “big dog” or “small dog”. They’re not going to spend time analyzing the breed. So if you get say, a black lab, it’ll serve the same purpose with the added benefit of being easier to train and less likely to maul your baby.
I used to volunteer at a no kill shelter in Philly. 1/3 of the dogs we pulled from animal control were owner surrenders by people who didn’t understand what they were buying. Primarily huskies, german shorthair pointers, etc who need tons of exercise and stimulation and aren’t going to be happy in your one bedroom apartment with a twice daily walk around the block. Even labs and goldens need tons of exercise. Begging people to just get cat or maybe a gerbil.
Animal control had plenty of pits or what the Brits would call XL bullies too but they were last to be pulled by rescues and typically euthanized for space or behavior first. And chihuahuas. So many chihuahuas.
I'm loving the haunted child bit, but "Mummy say's we're good at puzzles *bulldog growl!*" absolutely sent me XD
past inventors absolutely had their own weird obsessions they insisted would take off (see: the socialist submarine guy, although he was more like too early for his time)
Riley, I don't think you understand - I *only* want you to talk as haunted child from now on
This is hauntology
Conservative populism bearing down on us like a rogue autonomous cargo truck
Conservatives are offended by their child being aware that they will one day have a right to a gay marriage, not also from the way their kids are they seemingly just shove neo nazi propaganda in their face from the cradle and that's fine, that's all ages appropriate.
steampunk started out extremely dystopic, see The Difference Engine (1990) by Bruce Sterling and William Gibson
The novel kind of glosses over/hints at how awful and backward the British-backed Confederacy is but I think the factory filled, unionized circus trope stuffed Manhattan Commune was kind of cool
I love having to deal with pitbulls as a delivery driver in rural America 🥳
Also I see so much more unleashed dogs at parks in America too!
I actually wrote a steampunk dystopia short story based on the idea “well what if you took Victorian concepts of labor relations to this high technology?” and called it the brass goggle factory
A24 accepted the demands of the striking workers (only studio to do so afaik)! The strike is over there
Brian Ross will win the majority election
In america when you adopt a bully breed you get a rebate from the child coffin imporium.
American trucker here. Everything I've heard on this podcast understands the issues pretty well.
