RAAC City ft. Well There's Your Problem

You've heard the expression "safe as houses"? Well, let me introduce you to a new expression: "safe as schools, hospitals, Universities, many large stores, the Ministry of Defence, and also houses," because Britain decided to inflict mafia construction on itself across most of its own built environment between 1950 and 1996. Why? Because it's Britain, of course! Liam and Rocz from Well There's Your Problem join us for the second time this Summer to get down into the engineering details of it all.

*STREAM ALERT* Check out our Twitch stream, which airs 9-11 pm UK time every Monday and Thursday, at the following link: https://www.twitch.tv/trashfuturepodcast

*WEB DESIGN ALERT* Tom Allen is a friend of the show (and the designer behind our website). If you need web design help, reach out to him here:  https://www.tomallen.media/

In case anyone still reads this, the current labour government has promised to remove all RAAC from schools by 2029. I wish them good luck.

The Cowboy Surveyer sounds like a Western style Saloon that's also a Gay Bar popular for cruising.

To answer Rocz' question "who gets more left wing in office?" the funniest example I can think of is Juan Velasco Alverado, who led a coup in Peru in 68, and everyone was expecting this ludicrous fascist rule, and instead they did a major programme of land reforms and nationalisation of oil and mineral assets as well as the banks, effectively ending the status quo of serfs and landowners and setting the country up as a social democracy. Lots of that got rolled back by his successor and Fujimoto, and Abimael Guzman continued to be the worst, most annoying Maoist ever with the shining path.

Listening to the trade magazines segment in intense psychic pain because i used to do PR for a construction consultant so I had to be intimately familiar with the editorial board of Building Magazine. I can also confirm that there is a concrete magazine, and I once had to write a 2,000 word byline article for a magazine that exclusively covered glass.

S
Scott Thomson · September 12, 2023

Once I had written the glass article i sent it over to the magazine and it took ages for them to get back to me. About a month later i got an email back from them basically saying that the magazine had folded and it for the past few months it had been ‘held together by dreams’. Massive respect to the glass people tbh, you gotta do what you love.

Looking forward to British journalists feverishly looking into records of children who die under these schools so that they can proclaim these kids deserved to be crushed to death because they had been caught vaping once. Building the red army is self-defense, make no excuses for the terror

K
Kate · September 12, 2023

Well, clearly it was the dampness of all the vape fog. Couldn’t be any other reason for a British building to ever get damp in 40 years

Re: politicians getting more left-wing in office, the only example I can think of is Fidel Castro (who went from “keeping capitalism is fine, but we need some land reform” to proclaiming Cuba socialist. Notably, a significant portion of that was due to the USA’s refusal to tolerate the milder left-wing platform). On the other hand, I can think of two politicians who became more left-wing relative to their past self on specific issues: Abraham Lincoln (on the issue of what to do with “the blacks” after slavery was ended) and Barack Obama (on the Gay Marriage issue, although he was defeated pushed to that position by broader societal change.

B
Ben Schwabe · September 12, 2023

Obama moved Right on almost every issue as soon as he got elected. Gay marriage was an outlier.

that's funny, me and my dad used some of this shit to build storage sheds. It's pretty cool for that, it's better at being a side wall than just about any other cladding, weighs about the same as sheetrock, can be scewed on like drywall, doesn't require any specialty tools or formwork, no fiddly mixing, no masonry experience. But as a steel reinforced material for *roofs*. good god

was anyone else in Merseyside circa 2014 when they started rebuilding a bunch of schools and the new ones were consistently big glass boxes containing a bunch of smaller glass boxes instead of classrooms (had a fun sort of blinding magnifying glass effect when the sun was out), lots of big steps and heavy benches instead of chairs, absolutely none of it fit for purpose or able to accommodate the existing number of students? Only worth mentioning that you can 100% guarantee even if any new schools Do get built they will be uhhhhh useless

RAAC is also used for insulation purposes due to all the air bubbles in it and for interior walls in some countries. But supposedly it’s known within the industry that even with reinforced RAAC, you don’t use it for load bearing purposes. Various British administrations have been just passing the buck on down given how long they have known about this.
