Captain Gatso and the Hypertension Cowboy

It's the free one!

We discuss some UK-centric news this week, with a brief return to an American startup we’ve previously covered that—in the hopes of destroying school bus drivers’ unions—created Uber for school buses and may have facilitated a mass abduction? Or the world’s largest school bus traffic jam? We also uncover some archival footage of a certain 1980s Dutch pop band that went through some hard times in the early ’90s.

Riley’s summary of Edward Gorey’s entire body of illustration is based on a single poster (gashlycrumb tinies) that was super popular in 90s college dorms. It was a parody of saccharine children’s ABC books. The US PBS series Mystery! has been using Gorey’s opening animation for decades. Tim Burton completely ripped off Gorey’s aesthetic for his shitty movies. He’s a noteworthy queer ancestor

I can't tell if my nonce detector is working, this huge traffic jam of busses keeps going beep beep beep

Alice's assumption that Americans live 10 blocks from their child's school is symptomatic of something I see a lot in Europeans. They simply don't appreciate how large the US is or how much sprawl there is here. In US suburbs, it's not uncommon for even elementary schools to be 3 or 4 miles from you, as the crow flies. And getting there by any other means than car entails walking 5 or 6 miles, mostly along what amounts to a highway, frequently without sidewalks or signal lights that are even long enough to cross the road during.

I grew up in Clay county Florida. My school bus stop was exactly two miles away. My elementary school was around 10 miles away and my high school was around 20 miles.

If these kids today would just walk to school uphill (both ways) in the snow, they’d develop some grit and also get home faster than taking Zümbus

The article has a metric ton of projection. This columnist has been burned personally by HR and by the Wales institutions... And probably is as asinine and stupid. Probably he made sexist comments and HR did the only thing it does, that's punishing the workers that move out of line. In this case the code of conduct ones. And the Wales institutions... I don't know, probably an eco tax or something sensible that people hate just because. Columnists and any media Commentators deserve all the scorn, all the time, from everywhere. Thanks for the article.

So when Hussein talks about Captain Gatso and the woman inside him, l don't think trans; l think, "Captain Gatso is an Evangelion? That explains so much"

My parents immigrated to the US from the Netherlands. I was born later and don't know much about the country. Today one of the questions in my life, has been answered, but new ones have appeared. I love pea soup. Why? I now know it apparently is a Dutch thing, but how the hell did the Dutch develop a liking for it. Is it a gene? repressed memory? A new life search begins.

Kurt Francisco is a name you'd give to a dashing bit character in Toast of London. Do it. Do it in Matt Berry voice. It's so good.

I went into the bus story expecting it to be pretty sparse on funny elements. But a company which presumably talks about streamlining and optimising, flying in school bus drivers is phenomenal

Buses needing drivers? What is this, the past? We already have self driving buses in the form of Columbian children driving 17 buses via remote link while also driving a Colombian bus.

Do these Uber for buses AKA a bus have surge pricing meeting at pickup and drop off your kid has to pay an exorbitant fee just to get to school and go to home

Believe it or not, the existing contractors that do a lot of school bus contracts already had freelance traveling bus drivers. Before my sibling decided to take up a job where they didn't have to deal with a bunch of kids with nothing more than "behave or I'll tell you to behave again" to try and get them to behave, their (union) bus driver contractor had been offering them and other drivers in the district they were in jobs throughout the mountain west for one school year because the schools were desperate for drivers there.

D
Donovan Burns · September 5, 2023

As someone from the mountain west I'm not surprised. We have what I call 'the Vale dilemma' where island like towns think that they can become absolutely boojey tourist resorts with no problems ... until it turns out that if you want cheap servants they have to be able to live in town, but if you want a pure and pristine poverty free town you have to pay extra for the servants to commute. (And the servant's town is also at risk of trying to boojey itself).

Some more school bus mayhem that is right up y'all's alley. Kentucky's biggest school district, which serves almost 100,000 students, also had a "driver shortage" problem - in reality a "we don't pay school bus drivers enough" problem - so they turned to a tech startup called AlphaRoute, which promised to fix everything with a hyper-efficient AI-generated overhaul of bus *routes.* The surprising result: buses hours late to and from school, buses taking various insane detours, children missing until well into the night without food or access to toilets, some of them returned having soiled themselves, parents terrified because they had no idea where their kids were, schools closed for weeks. You might think that a company promising to fix your driver shortage by using AI to monkey with bus routes would be enough to trigger skepticism by the school board, and if not that the fact that the company caused similar mayhem in Ohio. But you'd be wrong!
