ChatGPT Presents: Garum on Toast
For this week's bonus, it's an alternate configuration of Milo, Nate, and Alice discussing a startup to make every famous person into a PS3 polygon caricature to be licensed, news that Britain's rivers will become even more sewage-laden, and a Guardian article where a guy asks ChatGPT to invent new recipes that hopefully won't kill you.
This is the radio segment about the Roland TB-303 that Nate mentions in the episode: https://soundcloud.com/aracityradio/lost-in-music-roland-tb303-day?si=858ddc45a481454fac1e229f831e4cb2

Squirrels do suck....They ate my brake lines once.... I got your back Alice.
Does England not have wastewater treatment plants? I'm hoping you're exaggerating for comedic value but I fear you're not.
We do but a lot haven't been upgraded for decades, because muh profits. Problem is when home developers build a massive new estate in an area and the local plant can't handle the increase in load so it starts overflowing into the rivers
"Malcolm X never lived to see the government fall, but the state he opposed made him a stamp. Maybe that's the best you can hope for if you never give up, your enemies will teach your corpse to dance."
As someone who works in sewage and wastewater treatment, a lot of our work involves maintaining private sewage treatment plants which serve private properties and small developments. They do treat the sewage to an acceptable standard before entering the watercourse, but the standard is now fairly outdated. The current regulations can work (when enforced, ahem), but are still very bare-bones. We were pretty horrified when we saw this story break (we were expecting the standard to be tightened, not loosened).

Heck yeah geezer is gender neutral. The fact that all babies look like old men really helps, tbh. Good luck, Nate! And kiss your sleep goodbye.
Chat gpt recipe is just the robot parrot from Dexter's lab (start at 2:50) https://youtu.be/Wn5bTzUUXIU?feature=shared
Supply teacher Alice for pm
I love it when the supply teacher just gives you the answer in podcast class.
I saw that same Cassoulet video that Alice did (I think). When the recipe was finished the guy admitted that it was after midnight
I work in my states water quality agency and the idea that you can dump raw sewage straight into the river is kind bogglingly backwards.
The only time anyone on this episode pronounces Aaliyah’s name correctly is when Nate quotes someone who he says “has no idea” how to say her name. Pretty funny, guys.
Marduk assembled my crappy press board dresser.
I've got a copy of the Fannie Farmer cookbook that was the gold standard for making pancakes. The book is so heavily used specifically for the pancake recipe that the pages are brittle and the book naturally pops open to that page. Can't think of a single other recipe I've ever used it for, but we've been using it for pancakes since the 1980s.
Maybe the tech bros should figure out how to make AIs *eat* before they unleash them on us.
Come to think of it, they should also teach them how to shit so that GIGO principle is maintained.
You guys should check out the New Zealand Pak'n'Save AI Recipe generator that generated recipes for poisonous sandwiches and chlorine gas
Love how this AI recipe douche hasn’t seemingly heard of ppl being proprietary about their recipes/kitchen experiments, famously even within families at times!
ie I am NOT putting my mac n cheese in the cloud
Nate’s Aaliyah-Judy Garland-Malcolm X supergroup joke had me dying in the car to work. An American living in a land where his genius goes half recognized.
"From Rivers of Blood to Rivers of Shit: Conservative Thought in Britain, 1968-2023" Not quite an IR paper
“All of the Turds Are Getting Worse” so true
We had an AI recipe recommender for our online supermarkets in NZ, when you started adding non-food items they went fuckin hard, like "people who bought bleach also bought AMMONIA, consider combining them for 3% off and a great chlorine gas smell!"
Look, someone was looking for a recipe for homemade mustard, and the AI got it _almost_ right.
Oh yeah, and love the Nate rant. If you want a true italian recipe, it should be about 5 pages long. 4.5 pages of those are culinary hatespeech about anything from advocating a Basil genocide, to the location of true cross. The recipe itself is short, because its italian. If your tomatoes slap, then they slap no matter what.
And to the cooking part: Mapo Tofu base is the thing of sechuan cuisine which you can put on anything and have at least a somewhat pleasant experience. So WHY. THE. HELL. do you need an AI? FML I this has made me feel old, just go outside and put MAPO TOFU on whatever you find. A squirrel or something, I don’t care. Just... Have fun? Isn't it what cooking is truly about?Having fun and finding new stuff you'd like to put in your mouth??
Exactly! Mapo tofu with eggplant is even quite standard as far as variations go...
It amazes how Lanyard Labour will scrap everything EXCEPT the fiscal rules. That one apparently would be a step too far.
now i need to hear the clogheads song about israel
Also well done for covering both cuisine *and* the TB-303 when Reilly is away, shame the startup wasn’t wine related
I was waiting for some kind of Waco Bell joke in the Koresh cookbook bit, but then I realised it doesn’t really work out loud
the ai cooking thing was a bit a streamer did beforehand because of how bad the idea is
like who falls for this stuff
As another Chinese-American I second the Fuchsia Dunlop recommendation. I literally live in China and can read Chinese, but I still rely on her cookbooks heavily (mostly because, unlike many Chinese recipes, she actually includes ingredient measurements).
If you'd like a long read about London when it was a Lake of Shit (and more), I invite you to the Monthly Revue [sic]. https://monthlyreview.org/2018/07/01/cesspools-sewage-and-social-murder/
I tried consulting the local haruspex for new recipes but they just kept suggesting offal
Nate, your Afghanistan story reminds me of a Artemy Kalinovsky tale from when he was studying the Tajik SSR in Tajikistan. He was told to interview an old guy at the Communist Party archives and the old guy said to him, "Our young people go to America today and they say, 'Look! They have communism here!'" (Communism being synonymous with "development" to them.)
I saw a Reddit post by a guy who realized after 12 years of owning his home that the toilet wasn't hooked up to a pipe. It was emptying directly into the crawl space
