I see no problem moving the entire economy on Bitcoin. check this out: 1) people trade in bitcoin but it's hugely inconvenient because the transactions are so slow 2) the practice of trading in Bitcoin IOUs is adopted slowly by people who need to conduct large transactions without having to haul around heavy bitcoin 3) a vast array of privately issued bitcoin-backed financial instruments flourish and fewer and fewer hard bitcoins are exchanged on the blockchain 4) the government takes this over and issues "the dollar" which is in theory redeemable for bitcoin but no one does because what are you trying to do with a real blockchain bitcoin? 5) a supply shock forces the government to do rapid monetary expansion and "temporarily" suspends bitcoin convertability 6) this works pretty okay so the bitcoin backing is quietly dropped 7) bitcoin goes back to being a niche trading area more geared towards libertarian cranks Boom. problem solved
