Gandalf, Take Me to Number 10
We went to the Spitting Image musical in the West End. It was worse than we'd ever imagined. It's the closest we've ever come to re-enacting the scary parts of Event Horizon. It's the least funny thing a human can create. And we did it all... for you.

Very good episode, right in your remit, but it's about time someone tells Milo that he's not very good at impressions
Loving the user name.
I recently learned that Paddington Bear is supposed to be from Peru in the books. The author originally had him come from Africa, but the editors pointed out that there are no heard in Africa, but there is a species of bear that lives in the cloud forests of the Andes, the spectacled bear. So, the author changed Paddington’s origin, even though he looks nothing like a spectacled bear. Source: Eight Bears by Gloria Dickie, W.W. Norton and Company, 2023. A fascinating book.
So, Hussein thinks the show is called "splitting image" huh?
I’d thankfully never heard of this production but based on the description it seems to be a direct ripoff of the South Park guys’ Team America: World Police. Needlessly sexual puppets, pointless celebrity cameos, a few moments of capably-wielded and justifiable criticism of atrocities followed immediately by both-sidesing the other team for something mildly foolish, horribly racist accents.
Oh Spitting Image (the tv show) literally came out twenty years before Team America. And while SI had an influence on TA:WP (and South Park) the more direct influence on TA:WP was the older and much milder British puppet (or Supermarionation) show THUNDERBIRDS
Also it's so telling of that 'our views are sensible common sense sensible and everything else is wicked ideology' mindset at play here with that weird little pass-agg 'ooh you're gonna be triggered and you're not allowed to be mad at us because we mock everybody (especially if they don't look and act like us)' thing. At least stand by your comedy? The whole thing's bizarre.
It's like...chronic Westminster brain but also not paying enough attention?
jesus christ I've got so much to say about this, fuck me at least it puts paid to the idea that comedy in the UK is dominated by a - left wingers and b - good comics
I mean...I don't think the original Spitting Image was *that* good, it mostly comes up on those 'best of British comedy' lists because people who want to appear clever want to think it's important and they're not smart enough for the New Statesman or Yes Minister. But what Forde and his crew seem to have done is totally misunderstand grotesques. In the original the puppets look like gargoyles of the people they represent and that's the point, the writers of this seem to think that it's funny to take something that's already a gargoyle and making them say 'fucky-wucky'.
Further to the boring entertainment industry stuff, they may have used the songs without clearing rights claiming the parody exception. If so I’m sure the publishers wouldn’t be happy given this is supposedly a commercial endeavour but doesn’t sound like there can be much money to go after..:
unfortunately hamilton has reached the theatre threshold of “too big to fail” i’m pretty sure all 3 US national tours are still going
also theatre is by and for gay and trans people at its core so i don’t doubt there were some queer performers that refused if it made it that far
I joined the Trashfuture patreon just for this, out of sheer morbid curiosity.
Gotta say, Death of Stalin really is one of my all-time fav films, liberal politics or not. Watched it with my family for like the 10th time last night and it still has us laughing. Just doesn't get old.
SPANIKOPITA! Fantastic Venture Brothers episode, underrated place to bring your super science yacht
Has it ever come up on the pod or discord that there is a Brexit porn parody that does in fact have a Corbyn character. Unless the cover I saw was a porn parody parody
This whole episode I just kept thinking of the Romeo and Juliet scene from Hot Fuzz.
I’ve happily consumed years of my favorite commentators and comedians suffering through terrible pieces of media for my entertainment, and I’ll be honest, this is the first time I’ve truly felt concerned for just how awful this experience must have been. Don’t get me wrong, this episode was hilarious, but like… I hope you folks are doing well after that. Like I hope you had a nice few days after dealing with that at least.
Oh god... I imagined the puppets would look like muppets for some reason. But they look like Pinocchio after a bad crack addiction...
This comment made me look up pictures of these puppets, and… dear god, it’s far worse than I could have imagined.
36:38 really fun Riley-into-Riley edit
It is known that a sizeable proportion of the more successful british comics/presenters are centre-right to right wing ny default at the very least, but I do get the impression that Fatt Morde has an outside influence on that for some reason. Can think of at least one who says he gets his political opinions directly from him.
I think SI had its cultural moment in the mid-80s? Why haven't the puppets been burned by now?
I think they were. They brought it back at some point and made new puppets. God knows why.
I finally understand what has bothered me about British entertainment my whole life: it TRIES to be vain and vapid. I have been giving you all waaaay too much credit.
My American brain after hearing about this for the first time: spitting image = English South Park with puppets
English Team America, you mean
It's funny that they just let hussein say 'Splitting Image' the whole time
As an American it's good to know they hate us so much
As an American I'm very triggered. I didn't understand a lot of this but this sounds analogous to Capitol Steps which similarly sucks. They did a "Putin on the Blitz" bit probably fully 20 years ago. I also wish I had selective Alzheimer's to excise that random tidbit I heard once on public radio from my mind.
Sounds like these puppets stand ready for a stupider less magical Тайга syndrome, or maybe they came from there and detox went wrong. WTH is this musical, is it a big deal, how many like it are there?
I'm genuinely concerned for y'all's safety and wellbeing
Was that a 3 superman and a mad girl reference
Oh yeah Milo took it a bit far when he did a Lukashenko bit about potato and reuniting Montenegro and Serbia at an open mic in Podgorica. Was a solid 10 imo but the crowd was not pleased.
The giant puppet cock cumming on the crowd gave me huge Gwar vibes and flash backed til No asleep til Melbourne 10 or so years ago. Thanks for torturing yourselves team, great ep
Thank you for your sacrifice.. Again..
So I remember on a YouTube Zone a while ago Riley and Alice mentioning plans of going to see some undisclosed dogshit on the West end for the pod and I immediately thought it had to be this I feel validated and also horrified that I've manifested this
I'm so sorry for you guys
TF torturing themselves for my entertainment? Sign me the fuck up.
Braver than any troops
ohhhh here we fuckin' go
