Modern Feudalism Guidance feat. Emiliano Mellino

It's the free one!

This week, we speak with Bureau of Investigative Journalism reporter Emiliano Mellino about how changes to the UK’s migrant visa system for agricultural workers have created unbelievably exploitative conditions—often reported to be worse than in any other developed or developing country—and how the agency charged with enforcing the rules gets less money each year than the Home Office spends on pens and stationery. However, before we get to that, we also have to catch up with a Season One-style terrible startup, and discuss how a Shelley poem made a lot of Britain’s dumbest people furious.

Check out Emiliano’s reporting here: https://www.thebureauinvestigates.com/profile/emilianomellino

Also, we discussed some organizations helping agricultural labourers in the UK. They are Workers’ Support Centre Scotland (https://workersupportcentre.org.uk) and Work Rights Centre (https://www.workrightscentre.org). The former is funded by the Scottish government, but the latter does accept donations if you want to help them out!

I work at a wastewater treatment plant in NJ and if people knew what goes on at their local wwtp, they wouldn't drink tap water again.

Oz farm workers / fruit pickers now have a min wage thanks to huge union campaign and organising, but underpayment and exploitation still rife due to no enforcement and short stay visa workers from pacific islands

Okay, please for the love of god do a segment or ep on Charities in the UK. The amount of grifting going on at official levels is pretty galling, it's even worse to work inside of.

so nice of the brits to look at the worst parts of the US farm labor system and somehow make it worse by doing it in Britain with british things like caravans instead of longhouses. I mean we never thought about putting them in RVs instead of plywood shacks to get around housing laws

it seems unfair that while late stage neoliberalism forces the Brits to pay reperations for the empire by letting former colonies run the UK like the East India company, but the only colonies that get to do this are Canada and the UAE. Jamaica and Bangladesh should get a turn dumping sewerage into various British rivers.
