Service to the Economy Guarantees Citizenship
We spend a while looking over the economic dimensions of - whatever you want to call it - Starmerism, Bidenism, Levelling Up - a version of neoliberalism that realised, very suddenly and entirely too late, that it does actually matter quite a bit if your economy produces certain things. What kind of world does this look like? Let’s explore the contours of Productivism/Permanent Wartime Neoliberalism together, and what it looks like when dedicated Neoliberals try to do something different (embarrassing failure).
NOTE ON CONTENT: Since this episode was recorded, the Starmer team has declared that the Green Prosperity Plan - the focus of this episode - would be postponed (before even being implemented) from £28bn per year for five years… to £28bn a year for three years, starting after the second year of a Labour government. Embarrassing failure prediction comes true quicker than usual.

My dude heard gunshots and immediately transformed into Judge Dredd.
A warning from November huh?
*hangs a sharp right onto your block while your cheesy crust flies off and gets wrapped around the brake pedal, accelerates rapidly and crashes, converting your building entryway into an authentic brick oven*

l imagine the TF Spectator Garden Party goes like the opening scene from the Boondocks
Re: semiconductor fabs, Intel is building one in Phoenix, AZ. They use millions of gallons of water a day (people say that most of it gets recycled but realistically about 18-23% of it does). Phoenix also recently limited its residential construction due to water shortage. Lol.
Damn, it actually works in more ways. There is an early 00's documentary about the prototypes of the JSF, the X35 and (X32 I believe?). They spell it out: Fighter jets are becoming increasingly expensive, and we want to solve the problem with Technomics. Consolidate the needs of three branches into one jet, and economics of scale is bound to make all the tech cheap. That's what some guys from Chicago have said. They were expensive, so it must be true. The only analysis tool the JSF had was the spreadsheet. It could not look at the Military Industrial complex of the post-cold war. It could not even look at the history of failed joint programs, like the F111. Or that two protestant weirdos, the Navy and the Air Force, could not even agree on funding a joint engine program (which was originally meant for the F14 on the navy side. I believe the F14A with the Tf30 engine was only supposed to be temporary. But the F14A became quasi permanent because the Air Force left said engine program.), and now the JSF depends on THREE protestant weirdos to agree with each other. The F35 has failed to produce the cost savings, it has even failed to produce the part sharing between the branches (something like 20% of the parts are identical between navy and air force variants I believe, and 80% were promised). But all the JSF can say is: "Well, getting the Navy and Air Force to agree on anything is hard." Sure, but what are you doing to change this? Oh, nothing... OK.
OK, but what's the VTOL technology in the X-35 that gave cover for awarding Lockheed "too big to fail" Martin a big spend arms deal? (Bonus points if the VTOL didn't turn out to be that important.)
Thinking about it, I would not call it "Wartime neoliberalism". I'd call it "F35 Joint Strike Fighter Program, but for politics". Its ludicrously expensive, does not really do what it was meant to do, is just technically not corruption, and everything around this shiny jet slowly crumbles to dust
The idea of the spectator garden party turning into a soundsystem battle is so cursed. Nothing but come on eileen and radio house, playing so loud it blows peoples' hair back.
Cooking the rock of fiscal responsibility.
I keep pointing out that Green Investment sounding quite a lot like "It's PFI with a different name" and people who reliably say "but we're going to own shares" and mustering Matt Bruenig's love of sovereign wealth funds. I do immediately point out how useful this attitude was when we "owned" RBS but hey, who needs facts when you're shilling for another group of pointless political also-rans?
How have you guys not covered the fact that Australia is effectively banning vapes entirely yet??? They’ll only be allowed to be used to quit smoking which seems like they’re admitting it’s not as damaging to people’s health, but we’re not allowed to let people actually *enjoy* harm reduction for some reason so you’ll need a prescription and the flavours that appeal to kids won’t be allowed. The vape companies suck and all but it just seems like such a nanny state response.
Loved Milo's Kiwi accent - it almost, but not quite, helped me get over the fact that we're copying what is in fact an /Australian/ policy to ban vapes, announced the week before. Does burning rubber count as a savoury vape?
Burning rubber does count, and that’s how they’ll get those dastardly hoons.
thank you for being the forst podcast to broach the rizzing of baby gronk by livvy
a lot of people that I talk to IRL jump immediately from "nuclear power and electric trains have some mild issues and are expensive to put into place" directly to "it's like the fall of the roman empire man, a lot of people die off and that's life. what are we supposed to do about it, try anything? whatever" and then in their mind what they imagine is that it's actually okay that 200 million Bangledesh residents are going to be mowed down with guns as the country floods it makes it really hard to believe in real world proven solutions such as "people should have space on the road to go to work by bicycle if they live close by" and "people who choose to live a bit farther should be able to ride an electric train to work that is powered by wind turbines or nuclear reactors" and the reaction is "I would literally rather die than see a overhead catenary" and "wind turbine noise causes cancer" and "we don't have money for green infrastructure what about [....]" my honest on the street experience is that people actually are okay with the fact that a billion south asians are going to be murdered by hand with guns at the border and that this is cheaper and more okay than building HS2 or whatever
To be that little extra dark: Its not just based on racism. The thing which ****** me up during the flooding in germany was that the government held a huge press conference, and then said: "Urbi et orbi anno domini, thoughts and prayers." i don't want to hear a sermon, I wanna hear what you are going to do about it. But they acted like priests, and finished their sundays adress with "By the way, dont go down there and help. You are doing more harm than good." Don't get me wrong, there is still racism. But the racism decides just if you die by bullets, or die by neglect and get mentioned in the next sermon.
The Brothers Barclay liberated the oppressed nations of Sark from the feudal yoke. Hate to see an ostensibly socialist podcast enjoying their financial failures. 😔
Arguably this “productivism” is just fascism in new clothes. In its purest form, the American variety, the only “good jobs” accessible to the plebs are with the US military. You want health care, a decent food stipend, the ability to vote by mail, just sign on the recruitment papers, kid.
I looked up Dani Rodrik's "On Productivism" paper once Riley mentioned it and ... yeah, so much of it would map very easily onto old-school fascism. " It puts less faith in markets and is suspicious of large corporations. It emphasizes production and investment over finance, and revitalizing local communities over globalization. It also departs from the Keynesian welfare state – the paradigm that “neoliberalism” replaced -- in that it focuses less on redistribution, social transfers, and macroeconomic management and more on creating economic opportunity by working on the supply side of the economy to create good, productive jobs for everyone. And productivism diverges from both of its antecedents by exhibiting greater skepticism towards technocrats and being less instinctively hostile to populism in the economic sphere." Sure, classical fascism found a role for the large corporations to play in the new nation-state, but the 21st century version was bound to put its own unique spin on things.
i'm not going to claim that Milo's New Zealand accent is good...but it's far better than it deserves to be
I feel saying "Ordinary Vagina" is going to be my Pussy Riot cover band name
