Hollyweird Rise Up ft. Nick Adams

Nick Adams, writer on such shows as BoJack Horseman, New Girl, Tuca and Bertie (and others!), takes some time off the WGA picket lines to talk to us about writing as a profession, how studios have constantly sought to break up and undermine it, and the insane plan to replace Hollywood Writers with ChatGPT.

I won't see you at all, this is a podcast.

Telling stories to each other is one of those oft romanticized things we do as humans. Imagine thinking that autocorrect can do the same thing with any level of proficiency let alone anywhere near the level of emotional resonance that real people do

It's incredibly similar to the conditions in the costume department with iatse. Work is precarious, irregular, and you're looking for a new job multiple times a year. We're now doing 10 episode seasons instead of 22, on a similar schedule, but worked as hard as if it were a feature film. Film hours and stress and quality for the pay of a cable show, making a mini movie every few weeks. It's grinding us into the ground and if we can't work 80 hour weeks we're "weak" and can't make it in the industry. I'm pushing myself into an early grave and I don't even get my name in the credits.

You suddenly find yourself fading in from unconsciousness in an open topped car in Dallas. A man turns to you and says, " Hey you, you're finally awake. You were trying to cross the border, right?"

I think it's cool how we've vested the power over a significant fraction of humanity's cultural and creative output in a bunch of guys whose best idea for what to do with that power more or less amounts to "Elsagate but we reskinned Spiderman's face with an Xbox Kinect"

Can always count on Riley to throw in something like "and it's actually like that time on the prehistoric Eurasian steppes when" and I fuckin love it every time, the man is fuckin great

Hearing Alice reference fanfiction was funny because from what I’ve seen, even fandom communities don’t want AI

AO3 has been libertarian about it, but that's sort of par for the course with AO3.

If you're on the fence about supporting the writers, one, I don't really know why you're a subscriber, but two, you should read up on the energy and natural resource costs these artificial intelligence products incur. No one is less deserving of that much water than Hollywood, except perhaps the cash croppers in the Central Valley.

My wife has been on the picket line here in LA, and apparently she just got drafted to be a strike captain. I work for Disney, so technically I'm on the other side of this dispute, but also I'm probably gonna get laid off soon so fuck 'em. Anyway, my new favourite hobby is giving ChatGPT prompts based on summaries of scripts my wife has written and then sending her its version of her ideas.

I swear it's always people who lack the skills that advocate for these " improvements" or shortcuts . And it's always a matter of reducing labour cost.. Take translations for instance. A dictionary or a translation database is a huge help, but requires knowing both languages very well. Yet, it's been promoted to machine translate first and then "fix"... By monolingual management. With terrible results. As an avid reader I dread both our AI translators and writers. Ffs.

Gang, I believe you are making too generous of an assumption that someone as brain dead as Ben Shapiro would be capable of having a spark of creativity, emotional depth and talent. These are skills that Conservatives do not possess. And that's probably why he's pro-AI. There's not a single witty, introspective, or original thought going on in that skull mush of his. Any old monkey thinks they can make art until they actually try.
