Cell Block IPA ft. David Banks

Riley, Milo (now returned from holiday), Alice, and special guest David Banks (author of The City Authentic, out now on University of California Press) get into the relationship between real estate capital and the municipal deep state to answer the question: how the same twee aesthetic took over medium sized cities in the US, UK, Australia, and elsewhere, and why has BrewDog set itself up in the prison where they held Ned Kelly?

Shit, I didn't finish the episode and I completely forgot what the first 20 minutes were about

the part at 43:30 about authenticity was really eye-opening.

I work for one of the better known National Parks in the US. Most parks have a non-profit affiliate that is loaded. A friend was describing the Conservancy affiliated with our park as a sort of shadow administration, because it brings in and directs a lot money that Congress wouldn’t be willing to provide. Also, the director of the Conservancy was a high level staffer for both a former governor and former senator, so he’s got tons of connections among the elite in the state and in DC. Sounds very familiar…

It's that way all the way down. Individual parks in NYC have their own conservancies, and not just the big ones. Weirdest byproduct of that l've run into is Bryant Park's award winning public restroom. (l'll admit that it is the nicest public restroom l've used).

so funny to me that the podcast now effectively has their special boy Matt Hancock and now their special girl Liz Truss, whom im sure will be delighted by that title, and they both hate each other, this podcast is like the maiden aunt in a PG Wodehouse story getting hancock's bertie wooster to deal with his equivalent cousin from the other side of the family, its perfect

The bit you read out at the end there sounds like the monologues at the beginning and end of Trainspotting

I'm sure the Indonesian army doing genocide in the 60's was all worth it to have one of the most cringe sounding ideas for a building ever right in the middle of Jakarta. Well done, Dulles Brothers. Really left a legacy there.

Also melbourne has a very thriving brewery scene why does a chain think it’s gonna work? Like when they bombarded Sydney with Starbucks and most of them had to close cos Sydney already has good coffee

The cinemas at Pentridge are legit the best cinemas in Melbourne. Every seat reclines.

I worked for a municipal economic development corporation in a tiny town in Michigan, and I recognized everything you guys were discussing around the 55 minute mark. The picking of winners, the loading of the boards to point things in exactly one direction. It's insane.

Can we replace the real Kier Starmer with Milo? Is Milo smaller in stature than Starmer so he can wear the latter's skin or do we need to force-Milo-ize Starmer?

Yeah, also boo to that twink.

I live not far from the former Pentridge prison redevelopment in Melbourne which features a quite nice use of old bluestone, and we go there sometimes when the best movie option is at the cinema there. But the cursed vibes of former place of incarceration, torture and execution is hard to ignore. The cheery pics of executed revolutionary democrat Ned Kelly seems particularly wrong.

I'm a bit cross that the Orange County is in Indonesia instead of Malaysia. A cheap "Disneyland with the Death Penalty" joke was right there for the taking.

Their representation of Irvine is a pretty good simulation of High Irvine Company architecture, at least.
