Britainology 59: Australians in Britain feat. Sanspants Radio
We've fixed the issue that was causing glitching during playback!
For this month's first Britainology, we've decided to invert the formula of our last show with Jackson Baly and Joel Zammit of Sanspants Radio: instead of Brits in Australia, we're now discussing Australians in Britain. And we cover everything from the celebrities--your Peter Andre, your Jason Donovan, your Nick Cave--to the strange cultural phenomena like the Aussie magnet of Clapham Common and the insensitively-named chain of Oz-themed bars. We very much hope you enjoy!

Clame to fame: my parents saw nick cave on high street Ken in London a few weeks ago ago
the one word i would use to describe nick caves first band The Birthday Party is Heroin - every member of the band was an addict yet somehow all but the bassist kept going for like 40 years
These days you can't even do cocaine with Julia Fox in Britain, truly a sign of western decline
glitching is ruining the episode
Shop near me in melbourne has reprinted those 'I hate every cop' shirts if you want one.
Very kind of you to offer but there's zero way any of us could wear it lol
Blue fugates are the blue people in Kentucky. They come up on trillbillies from time to time https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blue_Fugates
Something about Sonny's Burning make me think of a Vonk version of That's When I Reach for my Revolver
'Bring back the term Slapper for middle aged women who've had too much to drink' did NOT go down well with a female audience.
bring back the term Slapper, but just for emotionally arrested bros with mommy issues
I disagree that Australia is more racist than Britain because every bit of racism Australia has exists only because Australia was founded by the British. I think rural areas in Australia can be incredibly racist, but the other thing is that Australia is the most urbanised country in the world (something line 98%) so it’s more like an incredibly vocal minority who have their own political party (The Nationals, the Liberal National Party in Queensland). I’d even argue that politics-wise we’re now less racist because that “Stop the boats” rhetoric was ten years ago now, but Britain is adopting it in present-day wholeheartedly. Also you can get a coffee after 5pm in Australia, but we have *iced* coffee
Genuinely curious: Is it better now? Switzerland had its "Swiss Trump, but competent" like 15 years ago. Culturally, its not important anymore. But none of the policy have been reversed, and the 'left' does not even talk about the ongoing deportations. Switzerland did not recover.
Can you please republish the (fixed) episode in the feed? Still glitching for me
The blue guy you are talking about recently died. I might be wrong but I think it was something Covid related. I have actually seen someone else with the same issue as that guy. I was walking home from work and I see this older woman with blue gray skin walking towards me. Turns out there is a woman on Long Island that had the same thing happen to her but as a child and had more to do with the pharmacist writing incorrect instructions. In person the coloring for her was more grey than all the imagines I have seen of the other guy. It was slightly haunting seeing it in person when you aren’t expecting it.
made me think of that particular group of people in North Africa (can't remember which country) that work with indigo dye and dye themselves blue
The serial killer whose victims don’t have livers is actually a guy from the X-Files. He eats the livers and then goes into hibernation for 30 years
real Toomheads know
That talk of British kangaroos seems like a good a time a time as any to bring up Inchconnachan, the Scottish wallaby island.
Thanks for fixing it, bloody technology eh
Also, come on man, one city in Britain has a bunch of vegan restaurants and you feel weird about it, eat your vegetables, you can have a kebab when you get home.
Nick Cave lives in Hove, which if you're from Brighton is probably it's own mad pathology.
also if anyone's become spiritually Britishit's Nick Cave, down to his slightly smug, pseudo-intellectual centrist tendencies that I suspect are largely a smokescreen for "I don't think I should pay more tax"
Takes about a week in Aus for Milo to fully pick up the accent
The Clapham Common thing feels like it might actually be a posh private school thing. As a percentage of the population there aren’t a lot of Australian aristocrats and they hate being called on it because we don’t do “class” but if they’re playing shirtless rugby union there is a 100% chance they wore a straw boater to school and their family have owned the same land since before federation.
Sonny’s Burning goes hard
Nick Cave is to fucking posh to be rattus
his whole fucking deal is private school boy heroin chic slumming it. The reason he scans weird is because for skips even if your fammily have owned a sheep station the size of Denmark since they did death squad shit in 1820, you can't present as posh outside your rugby prefrerences.
Not lying, I spent an inordinate amount of time trying it on different machines until I concluded it might not be my crap hardware causing the issue...
I've got bluetooth headphones and thought they were just dropping out
Nick Cave is the rock dog who made it, like for every nick cave there are 100 sad 50+ year old men at the tote who were friends with him in the 80s and deeply resent his fame and will take every opportunity to talk shit about him
Yeah, I always figured he lived in England to preserve the mystique.
Must have forgot to flip the audio the first time. Glad y’all got it sorted so quickly! Great episode, love the podcast
If I had a nickel for every time Trash Future imprints made fun of towns near my cousins in the Queensland periphery I'd have ten cents. That's not a lot, but it's funny that it's happened twice.
