Against Enshitification feat. Cory Doctorow

It's the free one!

This week, Riley, Hussein, and Alice speak with author, activist, and friend of the show Cory Doctorow about the ongoing lawsuit against the Internet Archive—a campaign by the mega-conglomerate publishers of America which all hate free digital book lending—and why public libraries are squarely in their money-squeezing targets. We also talk about some great developments in some of the dumbest crypto / lending fraud cases, where it seems the brightest minds of the 30 Under 30 list forgot that prosecutors can subpoena your emails. We hope you enjoy!

What size venue do you need? I saw Chapo at Oran Mor, or Stereo would be good if a smaller venue would work

Glad I listened to this before I booked my train and hotel for the Glasgow live show! Is there enough space to host the show at the Glee Club on Renfrew Street?

My favorite description of ShotSpotter is Acoustic Phrenology, from one of the lawyers I follow on Twitter

Bizarrely apt. I mean, it's apt enough on the face of it, but l guarantee you that ShotSpotter is using Principal Component Analysis (AKA Singular Value Decomposition), which was invented to do Phrenology with.

This is a formal petition for Hussein's plugs at the end to continue to be anecdotes from his life pls

As an author, journal editor, and academic deeply concerned about fair use law, library access, and the absolutely perverse incentives produced on behalf of the “big five,” I am very grateful for this episode. Many thanks, go Cory go.

Are you all writing your comments in Word and then cutting and pasting or something? What is with all these broken quotes?

Y
YukiNukem64x · April 12, 2023

It does it automatically when anyone uses quotation marks. It's just patreon acting weird, or they tried to implement a new quotation feature but it's broken. It doesn't do it on all comments, it is really wonky.

I have found Follieris Instagram and there are some pretty fun nuggets on there. For one, a photo op with Tony Podesta. For two, quite a few posts criticizing those who "defame" or "discredit" his whole strategic metals company. And three, him featured on a magazine cover with Modi 😂

I just looked him up as well, and Wikipedia has him under 'Vati-Con scandal', which I find delightful.

A generation that grew with the Internet, with " be careful what you write" or "don't trust strangers" ends up committing the most blatantly stupid crimes. Because they were doing the exact opposites. Darn. And people wonder why privacy matters, or why some things should be an email (and others not even a conversation near the water machine)

As an angry librarian that has to explain ebook licencing A LOT this was very cathartic, thank you.

It should also be noted that ShotSpotter changed their name to SoundThinking after Johnson's election, truly beyond parody.

Someone once bragged to me in writing about committing white collar crime so I replied back, 'That's crazy, your message didn't come through. Don't send it again.' What did they do? Reply with a screenshot of the original message with a '?'.
