FBI Anime Girlfriend Chatbot feat. Paris Marx

This week, we're speaking with Paris Marx (@parismarx) of the Tech Won't Save Us podcast about recent developments in AI--the grift moving from web 3.0 to artificial intelligence, the idea that anything is good enough so long as it automates people out of a job, and much more. Hope you enjoy!

FANTASTIC episode

ChatGPT has a bunch of weird little catch-22s built in. Like, it can't say the holocaust didn't happen. You ask it about the holocaust, it cuts right to the chase and tells you it's not allowed to do denialism. And it can't advocate for hate, violence, or things that might offend individuals or groups. This has implications if you ask it about Nuremberg, or things of this nature. It places ChatGPT in this spot where the holocaust happened but the fates of its perpetrators are off limits, which is one of those positions where if a human expressed it to you you'd be like "oh yeah they are definitely a nazi"

Tellus is Latin for "land"

OK thanks, and yes it is annoying

Uh, this episode isn't actually downloadable? Please fix

Walter Teply-Schnabl · February 5, 2023

Just a very annoying UI change - click on the 3 dots next to like and share for the download option (on FF it then opens in the browser and can be downloaded using Save Page As.. in the File menu - did I mention the change is very annoying?).

47:44 ok it was at this moment that I realized something: if the internet fills up with tons of ai generated advertisement garbage, then the number of say, human readers per word written would decrease, so each of these buzzfeed articles would be worth less to advertisers a.k.a. a crisis of overproduction brought about by automation.

Love the podcast, I will never stop listening, but please please please let Riley finish a sentence a couple times during an ep.

Yes, instead if Riley being constantly interrupted let's have Riley interrupt Alice when she's repeating imperialist propaganda

Personally, I think that Tellus will be the buyers of basically all of the real estate that's below a single centimeter above current sea levels.

yeah my position on AI in the software development environment is, can't say til the next major version of Microsoft Visual Studio drops with ChatGPD built in. Then we'll see what it can truly pull off. I'm not that worried because so far what we've seen are impressive performances in controlled circumstances like standardized competition problems, which are nice party tricks, but in the real world, writing a cool algo is like, the least of my problems, and also if writing algos automatically was this valuable it would already be way more common because you can just do this shit with AST manipulation and heuristics. Is ChatGPT going to give me something that a Markov Chain plugin wrote for Vim in 2005 doesn't? jury still out in conclusion: nope, nothing on the horizon is going to dislodge me from my position as Labour Aristocracy noooo sire.

It’s a bit weird how everyone talking about that telegraph article doesn’t seem to have read it considering the text was visible in most of the pictures of it, and that the actual story is so much better than what they think about the telegraph doing this. Ghislaine’s family took the picture to use agains Virginia Roberts if she got called during the trial, and when that didn’t happen they were so mad their “proof” didn’t go public the gave it to the Telegraph, which mostly seemed to be obliging them in showing what is one of the funniest photos in existence.

Winner takes all, serious money behind it, & small reasonable minority highly questioning viability. Fuck did I accidentally turn on a different episode with Paris Marx about self driving cars?

I once saw a conservative small business owner candidate in the US brag on his campaign materials that he had "always met payroll obligations" which is the minimum legal requirement for running a business with employees...

J
Josep C. · February 3, 2023

So many business owners have this weird sense of pride in doing the basic things. And as the example you say, a lot of times it's the bare minimum of legality. Which truly terrifies me, as most of them don't even do that and go full sicko.

Like Alice I also got the castor oil reference in that insufferable "sizzle" reel. Have to say that I much prefer the deranged operator stuff here in benighted Columbia over the twee wisps with columnists and / or landlords for parents back in Albion.

e

what would be the equivalent in Labour (saying we should solve housing by doing quote unquote "mao great leap forward"?) and how ratfucked would that person be in comparable circumstances?

e
etienne · February 3, 2023

the canada thing is super simple: online conservatives who get anywhere remotely big, just immediately go to the US. and then in return the consumers who want that kind of stuff just consume american conservative media. So it looks like there isn't a lot of insane online right wing shit in Canada while actually it's just a straight revolving door to what's going on south of the border. Same with the entertainment business! And also same, you have the Quebec scene which tries to interconnect with france but it kind of half works so you have all those dingbats with sinecures at Le Journal De Montréal and Le Devoir for a domestic audience
