AmeriCOIN feat. Joe Weisenthal
It's the free one!
This week, we speak with Joe Weisenthal (@TheStalwart) of the Bloomberg dot com Odd Lots podcast about minting the coin. But not just any coin: a strange loophole in a ’90s law designed to let the U.S. Mint produce collectors’ coins basically means that, if they wanted to, the director could order the Mint to issue a platinum coin of any denomination. Two dollars. Ten million dollars. One trillion dollars. But will the Democrats use this to completely undercut Republican debt ceiling brinkmanship? Probably not?

Imagining that supercut from the 2020 election of people chanting "stop the count"/"count the votes" but adding a third cut to "mint the coin!"
genuinely shocked that s9e20 of the simpsons (the one with the trillion dollar note) never came up here
"Dark Brandon's Commemorative Coin Dispute" is possibly more silly than "The Empire Collapses Because They Bickered About The Debt Too Long" and therefore more likely, but it's ironically a tossup, given that the second one would be the more disastrous and stupid, and we do live in the worst timeline.
“how on earth have you been given the ability to avert a global catastrophe and decide its too silly?? fuck off!” okay i’m sorry Riley but this is the first time you’ve said something truly stupid on the pod. McConnell figured out that politics is a zero sum: any time the Dems win, the GOP loses. Imagine if some city’s water was poisoned, and the local Dems proposed a bill to clean the water. the GOP votes against it, and that’s fine because nobody pays attention to that shit until the elections. Then they get to say, “look, under Gov McDemocrat, your water got poisoned!” And they’re right! There’s no upside to playing along!
I think you may have misunderstood - it's the democrats who have the ability to avert the global catastrophe by countenancing the minting of a coin
Hear me out: Gomboc shaped coin
100% Polygons are for normies! (also circles!)
coin gender reveal
Transporting the coin from the Mint to the Treasury is simple. We hire six Couriers. Five are just carrying random items, but the sixth Courier is carrying the Platinum Chip. What could go wrong?
I had not considered how funny it would be to make the coin really small.
coin to commemorate the coining of the coin, big letters reading IN COIN WE TRUST
alternately, if the law's allowance for any "specifications, designs, varieties, quantities, denominations, and inscriptions" means it can be any shape, then may i submit to the board that it is time to embrace tradition: KNIFE MONEY https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Knife_money
Joe is so close when he's talking about the complexity appreciators. The coin means the finance sector can't charge fees and make interest off more government debt. There is an alternative where wall street isn't needed and that's what they are really against.
Isn't this basically just the solidus? Somebody (preferably Riley) who is good at the economy please help my family is on the edge of their seats.
The "Skill issue" when talking about laws made me realise a current drama about a recent piece of legislation where I live is... Skill issue, they weren't good enough and now the goose is loose, so to speak. Normalize denouncing SKILL ISSUE more often
To me the coin is just like the giant nickel in Sudbury Ontario
I think the coin should be the predator handshake meme but of Biden’s old ass arm and Trumps saggy old bingo wing UNITED STATES
The Coin should be the platinum poker chip from Fallout New Vegas and if you use it during a game of poker you always win automatically, like Exodia
Patrolling the comment section almost makes you wish for a Nuclear Winter. (the memories, NV was So good)
political cartoon with a guy poking a stick labeled "200 billion military budget increase over 4 years" into a bike wheel labeled "massive corporate tax cut" and crashing into a bush with like "debt ceiling" on it
you dont hear much about MMT guys now that they got what they wanted: trillions in helicopter money dumped directly into the New York Stock Exhange. that's what they were about right? right?
Has to be Trump and the mcDonalds dinner for the football boys on the coin. Maybe even put grimace on the other side.
I think Trump’s McDinner would be perfect, but I don’t want the full image to be cut off and lose detail on a circular coin. Which is why I propose running the coin through one of those souvenir penny flatteners to get that design. Then you can write out the full trillion on the other side. Hopefully this doesn’t squish the value from the coin. I just think we have to commemorate it as much as we can.
ok big coin, like 3 feet diameter, one side of the coin, standard like picture of washington whatever, other side of the coin, here me out, manhole cover, to commemorate when the plumbers was 'ard
You think this episode is controversial because it entertains the coin as a "good bad choice". I think this episode is controversial because Riley denies the Ottoman state's claim to the Roman Empire and also (I guess?) advances the "Rome fell in 1204" thesis. We are not the same.
The Empire Never Ended-pilled
MintCoin
Wait, what's the armored truck story?
if someone had told Trump he could just issue a trillion dollar coin and called it The Trump, he would've done it.
The debt ceiling is stupid as hell and the quicker it is gone the better.
I pray to God that the debt default happens and the American empire comes to an end. As someone that rents and makes 6 figures in healthcare, I’m bulletproof. Even if Medicare collapses my unit will still be billing you $1,000 facility fee just for walking into my hospital.
im the guy who swaps out body fluids in and out of Immortan Joe, im golden
Are we endorsing the trillion dollar bill from The Simpsons as a serious thing? Idk, I guess it'll make sense once I listen.
Wait, the Simpson episode about the million dollar bill was... Actually true? Wow. It flew over my head as a kid
HUGE get
