No True Starmer feat. Abi Thorn

Abi Thorn (@PhilosophyTube) joins Riley, Milo, and Alice for a mostly dessert episode today! (Hussein continues to recover from a wasting disease, and will be back soon). In the mean time we’ve got news, startups, more Elon nonsense, and then to top it off we try to elucidate  “Starmerism” as a political theory, rather than just a media management strategy.

If only there was some sort of municipal waste system that could collect idk your food waste and maybe- hear me out here folks- compost it?! (Idk how much this is a thing outside of parts of the UK but like… it’s not that hard)

Watched/listened to the hit film "Plane" starring Gerard Butler while working, and it was not as bad as I thought it would be. Full of plane-phobe triggers though, so best not let Alice anywhere near it.

Cordite Vape is not a bad band name 🤔

The BritishVolt thing was hilarious because even here in the US, journalists hinted that it was a scam as the Swede was previously convicted of fraud and no one had ever heard of them. The main company StateVolt went to Italy and California and signed non binding agreements to also build battery factories but nobody in California believed them as start up hype is something that’s very familiar.

In pursuing constitutional rearrangements in lieu of fundamental economic ones, the UK is following Italy. The likes of Renzi were obsessed with reorganising the political system and completely sclerotic when it came to redistributing economic power.

I have this feel that the whole electric car thing will also go down as one of those Free Money Era thing. I feel like the speed at which the media is finding out and publishing like those like "real world scalability problems" is increasing at a rapid clip that wasn't really in the air back in the ZIRP times. it seems like we as a society have moved from 10-15 year into the future bans on hydrocarbon engines into like a realization that replacing all gas cars and trucks 1-for-1 with battery equivalent is *completely* insane anyways ban all cars

They completely missed the opportunity window of ZIRP and global market still expanding. Now its contracting and supply chains are screwed. And every year they delay things China will take more interests and slow down exporting its rare earth materials out. Also, car bad, train good.

Lars Carlström was deeply involved in the shenanigans around the demise of SAAB automobile back in the early tens, apparently, trying to represent such folks as Vladimir Antonov of Spyker and corruption fame, and a 'major indian car company' according to, uh, him.

P
Petter Ericson · January 26, 2023

And SAAB was then turned into NEVS which was going to pivot to electric cars, which uuuuhhhh... Has gone so-so in the ten years since.

As someone who works in a field tangentially related to pet food, I can assure you that any respectable brand meat brand wants animal protein that's from a traceable batch and from a reputable facility. And that's for pet food. Because dog chow is a prestige thing. For animal feeding its even more strict because the reasons you say, prions are a very scary thing. And they want something with makes them grow (or give milk, eggs), not make them sick. You can't feed pig to pig, or cow to cow, etc. But you can feed any mammal protein to a feed fish. Very skeptic of saving the planet with a Wi-Fi bin composting at home. Also, the smell. I've been there. At best it smelled like dog chow. At worst... I pity the bin man who have to work with that daily. Respect bin man. Easy as.

The binmen surveillance, checking to see if it's worthy of combat with them.

“Physical things you buy then have to subscribe to in order to keep use” is the next frontier of capitalist lunacy. I was down a bougie rabbit hole the other day and found a product you can install into ski boots to analyze your skiing. The product costs $500 upfront. But you can’t use it unless you also pay like $100+ a year to subscribe to the app. Total disaster for consumers.

I love that Abi is clearly a huge fan of trashfuture and actual friends with everyone, she's so enthusiastic about the Bits

Thinking about the respectability nonsense, I think it tracks somewhat. I have the, let's call it challenging, honour of having Wes Streeting as my MP and one of the weird experiences was discovering that his staff had clearly been taking my tweets and briefing anyone who turned up at CLP on them and the first CLP after lockdown felt like walking into the OK Coral with me getting constant side-eye from his staff and being ambushed afterwards by his chair while I was talking to another member. I can't explain why, but the fact that I dress in a shirt and tie, have a relatively posh accent and have been known to talk theory in Zoom chat might have had something to do with it. It certainly fits with Abi and Riley's theory here.

Damn, if this happened to me, I’d struggle to shake the notion that I am in fact the protagonist of reality

New Political Compass just dropped (the four genders) 1) Landlords 2) Financial Crimes 3) Silly bullshit a child would draw and put on a fridge 4) Surveillance

J

Quite like Avatar, the animation show. four nations. Everything was at peace until the fin crime nation attacked. And then the Avatar, the master of all four startup gifts, has to wake up, learn all skills and out grift the Financial Bender. Season 2 has advanced elements like financial turns into crypto, landlord turns into service economy, stupid bulls hit turns into nfts, and surveillance turns into 1984

Master Kong Starmer said, "I do not open up the truth to one who is not eager to get knowledge, nor help out any one who is not anxious to explain himself. When I have presented one corner of a subject to any one, and he cannot from it learn the other three, I do not repeat my lesson. Instead I welcome him, and ask that he go further."
