We Have You Surrounded! State Your Pronouns! feat. Beth Douglas

It's the free one!

Activist and campaigner Beth Douglas joins the gang to discuss Scotland’s decision to make transing your gender a more dignified, simple experience, and concomitant decision by the U.K. government to retaliate by launching Trident on its own position.

I like how the "scottish boodles" got Beth (I think, cant tell exactly who it was) to break and start laughing in the background

Alistair Jack feels like a Scottish name alert.

I am an American suburb-dwelling man and I get in my roof every few months to just make sure everything’s ok.

Re: the great American tradition of falling off of your roof: you'd think it would be a lower and middle class thing, because calling a professional is expensive, but it's not. It's purely a masculinity thing. In 2021, the guitarist from My Chemical Romance - a man who has Black Parade money and a McMansion in New Jersey - fell off a ladder and broke his wrist. American Men are allergic to calling professionals.

British people tend to fall from balconies in Mallorca or Ibiza, but that's very likely due to intoxication while on vacation. And now that I think of, Russian oligarchs have been falling down stairs or out of windows a lot. The call of mother earth is strong. It has a certain gravity you could say.

The whole Elon musk persona is investing in things and taking credit for directing or acting like he's directing them. I would rather attribute the successes of spacex and Tesla to everyone but the CEO. At the highest, the COO and CTO. From what I've read online One thing that was clear was that they were clearly trying to buy expertise. Because they were clearly specialising into an unused or available niche. Think space rockets when nasa was stalling. Or electric cars when the big honchos were reticent. For twitter? That's different. He went there for ego. Sacked people who were the most experienced in the field. It isn't an available niche as the previous successes had been Aif he wanted to repeat the previous stunts he should've purchased mastodon or similar system and started hiring ex Facebook and ex twitter employees. And after a decade claim he founded it. But nope, this time it for just for the ego of Mr musk and now his shell of credibility is lost. He lost the mandate of tech-haven. Also they make pretty terrible cars. Kia had to earn credibility and quality, Tesla is no different

Thinking about the appropriate analogy for devolution and the relationship between Scotland and England and obviously there's not a 1:1, but just wondering how coarse the analogy of the US's relationship to DC or Puerto Rico would be?

Man i hate Elon, but the SpaceX take was just sooo wrong. It the only good thing he does. Not the Mars colony bullshit, but bringing down cost and causing a shift in rocket development

I want to agree with that but even here he's being massively annoying, by sending a bunch of space junk in LEO and testing the water for Starship to be a rapid cargo transfer platform for the US Marines. like it's not so much that SpaceX is so good but more that the rest of the space launch industry is so dismal. But SpaceX is still impressive on pure technical grounds. People shit on them for being a result of the slow privatization of NASA and being super subsidized, but that's just the logical result of an Obama-era program to ... partially privatize NASA by opening them up to private bids for new launchers. Which was itself a reaction to the plan for following up the Shuttle being a giant mess that got cancelled and restarted like 3 times. Which was itself a reaction to Shuttle being a deeply flawed and politicized platform, and so on

If 00 is male and 01 is female, would a 02 number make you non binary?

Reminds me of a futurama bit, where bender is having a nightmare and says : there were lots of ones and zeroes... And I think I may even saw a two! Which fry replies : silly blender. There is no such thing as a two.

You're allowed to change your gender but you must have a minimum of 3 letters in your name or pronoun, got a friend in government and there are a lot of Jo's and Wu's who break it
