Anna Nicolau and Kaye Wiggins from the FT join the gang to discuss the rise and sort of fall of music as a securitised asset, and all the weirdness and guys you’d expect with that.

I ❤️the mention of Cage’s 4’33” by Hussein, was disappointed that that didn’t spark a Milo salesman bit about selling silence.

slightly off-context but 4'33" and Fountain by Duchamp are two towering art works that pose a real un-answered question about art authorship, which is now incredibly relevant because of AI JPG generators, and yet I haven't seen anyone bring them up or discuss them in context at all. Fountain asks, if a worker in a pottery factory produced a generic, non-art product, and you, as an artist, decide to *present* it as a final piece of art, then is it? are you the author? is the pottery worker the author? Compare/contrast, if I put 3 words in Cray.on then receive a JPG, and present it as a finished art piece, am I the author? Is cray.on the author? is the concept of art authorship even relevant at all? 4'33" asks, is the context in which an art piece presented, part of the art piece? What if there was no art piece and only context, would it still be art? For example, if I'm a digital scifi artist, and I gather a growing online fandom as I evolve and get better at my craft, and there's a online trace of people enjoying, sharing, buying my early art, then is that, fundamentally, part of the art work when I drop a new painting? If I drop the same piece but instead of having it be part of that arc of artist growth, it's just something I got out of a AI JPG generator, and I haven't produced anything before, is the latter art piece less valuable for it? Anyways maybe I'm not hanging out in the right corners of the web if I haven't seen this specific discourse yet.

My pet theory is that hedge funds are moving into housing because basically the US decided that housing is the only asset that cannot be allowed to depreciate at scale by the state. …and all that’s happening because houses stopped being commodities and started being assets largely because pension were killed. Anyway, just spitballing.

I once described Luton as "that place up north, you know, where the Milliners play," and thus must reject the Liminal Derby / Derbyshire March thesis. Anyway, always a pleasure to see the birth of a new Milo character. Looking forward to Gamemaster Anthony's birthday post inviting all of them to attend while Riley holds his head in his hands.

You think you're joking, but Paul McCartney owned the rights to "Happy Birthday" for years. He sold it before it fell out of copyright.

My third eye is opening 👁 I'm 30 and my teenage sisters listen to the same music I listened to when I was 14 because of what's big on tiktok. Are tiktok trends partly driven by the owners of these older songs? Arresting the music taste development of an entire generation? Ancient alien theorists say, "possibly."
