Techno Gentrification ft. Jean-Hugues Kabuiku and Matthys Rennela
This week's bonus will be out on Friday, but in the meantime please enjoy this special bonus segment that Riley recorded!
Riley sits down with the proprietors of radical cultural publication and media collective Techno Materialism to talk about - you guessed it - techno’s role in gentrifying European cities.

I love how Riley goes full NPR without his moronic cohosts
Thanks Riley, awesome coverage! I am based in the U.S, grew up here but was born in Europe and have family in the U.K, Germany and Italy. I produce a little in the genre, with the multitude of "probable" changes coming to the space, some of it rather inexorably fear inducing, i.e. AI generated emotionless "junk music", WEB 3 etc. I wonder how much of the gentrification is pre-planned in terms of shaping the industry as a whole with said technologies with an added spice of real-estate speculation, this can quickly turn into a "We Work" formula in terms of production studios, and I'd imagine would effect podcasting and other more independent broadcast mediums. I am sociology major and find it fascinating how consistently cultural norms have been hijacked and prescribed for those who can afford it after the genres have been created and made popular by artists who are basically on the verge of homelessness in many cases, with the obvious cascading effect of marginalizing everyone in that area that doesn't meet a capitol threshold. Not that housing isn't exponentially growing more expensive already etc. etc.
Fucking surreal to hear a TF episode where they suddenly begin discussing the gentrification of my neighborhood in Amsterdam-West. They hit the nail on the head though
Milo reverb voice: double bonus!
Riley in full Squidward mode
Regarding listening to music without paying, (a) analog radio still exists (car dealership ads and all), (b) SomaFM, much? https://somafm.com/ or equally venerable DI.FM? https://www.di.fm/ and (c) music podcasts are a thing, too, but I wouldn’t expect a podcaster to be familiar with that… If you don’t mind listening to NPR some of the time, KCRW radio is ad-free and available online, and they have award-winning music coverage. https://www.kcrw.com/ I don’t know how these various options’ online availability varies outside the United States, but there are aggregators of internet radio stations such as https://www.internet-radio.com/ (RIP iTunes, though.)
We truly live in the trashiest future. Although, we got some dope podcasts from that. Thanks crew
rap or hip hop are the pharma and biotech corporate scene. finance is techno and house. same types of people though and there is a lot of crossover. I hate that I know this but if you want confirmation looking over states evidence provided by the USDOJ/SEC vs XYZ-corporation cases makes this pattern obvious. Can tell a lot from what types of events companies blow money on to reward their employees for being total sociopaths.
When Riley sends the kids off to see their co-parent you can say things like "let's Berlinise Paris" on the show and no one will make a history-based joke. They'll just move along.
