Gary’s Mod Economics ft. GarysEconomics

Gary from Gary's Economics joins the gang to take a deep dive on the politics and economics of the budgetary disaster. Do you wonder about the mechanism by which these insane decisions make their way through to mortgages, pensions, and rents? Do you want to understand the core of Labour's weak response? Then look no further!

I've been thinking a lot about this since the Fed said the US needed to shed jobs to control inflation and cool the housing market rather than build more houses and take legislative steps to curb corporate greed. Also, how wages drive inflation is largely a bullshit claim repeated as gospel.

Wealth inequality isn't just a useful proxy for living standards it's also a useful barometer of economic stability. That doesn't mean you can just have 100% tax bracket (that's a *moral* necessity) but it does mean this is going to keep happening and markets will pitch a fit either whenever someone tries to make the economy more sustainable or decides to axe the idea of property and capital being able to "beat inflation".

And even if you explained to people how fucked banking and the economy is, I think you are nowhere still. The obvious question is: "What can I do about it?", to which the answer is what...vote? I think many people don't know how they got screwed over since 2008, but they know they got screwed. I believe the issue is with the question "What can I do about it". The answer is: Nothing. The 'I' does not matter in this society. And even if I partially do, like being a boomer with property, covid showed how quickly you can be ousted of the 'people who matter' group. A conservative politician in switzerland stood on stage saying: "Not every death is a tragedy", meaning old people who are his goddam voters. If you want a mantra for our establishment in the near future, you got it right there.

I sometimes am more pessimistic about this than gary. Like the idea of "If people knew about this, they'd do X". Like, literal concentration camps are running in this world to produce coffe or palm oil. And nothing changes. And I am really suspicious of building a coalition with 'middle class'. Many of the guys there got there with the attitude 'fuck you got mine'. Its nice when they stand on the same side as me, but expect them to fuck you over at the first opportunity.

i think it's important that if you feel like that then do more and see who follows you, if you're taking meaningful action with a renters union and you find a property OWNER on your side, they are pot committed just by coming over to your side of the argument at that point, your actions require them to be less shit to take part, force that cognitive dissonance on them (and maybe even be understanding about it if you can) and you build better allies than just fair weather friends

Gary has an economics YouTube Channel and *doesn't* know simple money farmer Lex Greensil? Smh, honestly.

The name of the episode is tops. Gg, well played, you inflicted psychic damage and made me remember a lot of GM playtime.

Gary needs to stop finishing every sentence with “I’m a multi-millionaire by the way”. It became mildly annoying after a while.

I assumed it was because of his accent, but then again my atavistic British class Spider Sense started tingling when Gary introduced himself even though I also have an accent that jams me up in British polite society.
