Was waiting for the racism to arrive and now starting the timer for sex crimes and authoritarianism.
All the talk about the Libertarian urge to purchase a new society makes me think TF would enjoy "Adventure Capitalism" by Raymond Craib, a newish book about the history of Libertarians trying (and failing) their weird huge social experiments. It offers the right balance of perverse fascination and eye-rolling annoyance with all their efforts, very fun.
I haven't heard Libertarians expressing fondness for Hong Kong (or Singapore) in years. Can't put my finger on why...

People desperately hang onto libertarianism because it's a flimsy rationalization of their selfishness masquerading as an ideology, and if they let it go they'd have to reflect upon those flaws.
I think it's more than that. Libertarianism is a certain kind of reflection on the modern neoliberal state, tempered by the propaganda, that presumes our current system is both bad and the best any Government can be. The fixation on "liberty" as a virtue and "not enough liberty" and the root of all evil comes from living in an obviously totalitarian state where its taboo to acknowledge the brutal controls.
Grimacing when Riley pronounces NACLA as an initialism, then doing the Jack Nicholson nod when he says the motto of NERV.

Everyone thinks they are lord Vetinari but they are Rincewinds. Or worse, teachers at the academy... Which can't teach nor know magic
