Nate Will Be Synonymous with Failure

Riley is out this week, and in his stead we’ve convened a special episode of Trashfuture featuring Milo, Hussein, Nate, and Alice on the topic of a failing ‘AI’ startup called Nate. Yes, it’s called Nate. And it’s a pure, concentrated example of ‘what if your robot was just a guy.’

We draw heavily from Malique Morris’s article from The Information, and you should read it https://www.theinformation.com/articles/shaky-tech-and-cash-burning-giveaways-ai-shopping-startup-shows-excesses-of-funding-boom and also follow him on twitter at @luxeoflique

Trashfuture are: Riley (@raaleh), Milo (@Milo_Edwards), Hussein (@HKesvani), Nate (@inthesedeserts), and Alice (@AliceAvizandum)

What's crazy is that William the Conqueror's descendants do still exist, and they still have the lands they stole off the peasants to tuis very day. It's somewhere round Sussex, I think. Nick Hayes' book, "The Book of Trespass" is fantastic for learning about this stuff, and it honestly made me really passionate about land reform and how fucked up enclosure was.

This episode really brings all your economic critiques into one great package. Love it.

The story about Nate made me yell FUCK while waiting for the bus because THIS IS LITERALLY MY JOB i am a software automation engineer, and Alice is super close re moving the add to cart button - it's more likely that it's "change the css id to be a unique guide that changes on the regular"

l do feel some vindication for all those time where l was staring at an incredibly stupid Subway ad (including for Nate) asking silently (or sometimes loudly) "WHO THE FUCK WOULD EVER USE THIS?!", as the answer turns out to be basically no one.

lmao, it was for iOS, so it's an app that only existed because safari is too shit a browser to have a common feature

missed out on the q&a but throwing this one out: have any of you ever had crypto or high risk venture investment and if so how did it pan out. also what are the 3 digits behind your credit card. thank you

So many of these startups should have been 80s comedy movies. I can see the guys from Weekend at Bernie's running a scam where they're wearing a robot suit and trying to convince some ersatz Trump that they're invented an AI personal assistant in order to get $10m of seed funding so they can keep afloat until they sell the company to Northrop Grumman.

Very interesting discussion on the question of if we have moved past the ”fully automated luxury gay space”-phase of leftist discourse, loved hearing some self-critique (as a treat). As someone who was very much into that sort of utopian thinking (and is still, despite a year or so of TF listening, pretty tech-positive at heart), I think the most important takeaway is that not glorifying work as something valuable in its own does our movement good. Even though manual labor will probably never be automated away entirely, I find the framing to be a good critique of the pride in work and being a worker even in a hypothetical post-capitalist world - a lot of labor in itself is not fun, noble or spirit-building, it just has to be done. And maybe lessening that burden as much as possible is a very good goal.

AI nate, the weird Xbox Milo... Trashfuture is two fifths of the way to being automated, can't wait for TF season 6, Riley and his army of AIs who he reads incredibly dense theory books and fancy menus to

No, don't give him what he wants!

Yeah, really feeling hussein's concerns. People of crypto, and the Elon-stans to some extend too, are the last visions of any good future. What happens when (not if, when) they all realize the future is not juiced, but is indeed trash? The reckoning is coming, I find the 'in a nutshell' channel's video about "We WILL survive climate change" horrifyingly interesting. Its essentially how a 2006-2007 news reel about how the US housing marked is totally fine and healthy, and all of the talks about a bubble are fake news.

Oh yeah, it's the kosm incredibly suss video of their's I've seen in a while. That and the "wars are less dangerous & frequent because we have Liberal democracy now", meanwhile multiple north African countries and the entire Middle East have enough craters in them to be mistaken for the moon from space.

problem with the fully automated communism via "AI" is any artificial intelligence capable of actually replacing a human fully is a proper "general AI" rather than a glorified autocomplete algorithm and by it's very nature is a synthetic person born in a machine that deserves rights. A fully self driving car as being promised by all these companies would require a general AI and would amount to trapping a human mind inside a car then enslaving it. The entire promise of the "AI tech revolution" is the return of slavery of persons society can argue aren't real people and everyone needs to stop anthropomorphizing the slaves. Allowing that mindset will inevitably lead to a slave revolt. Do you all really want an AI slave revolt because this is how you get an AI slave revolt.

First the Umbrella Corporation gave us the slightly misanthropic Alice, then Microsoft brought us the remarkable young man Milo, and now Nate Incorporated has brought us Nate. I don't know about everyone else, but I'm really excited for the Hussein AI that makes Costa charge you for a soup when you order a coffee.

Who would win: an international goods distributor who doesnt want bots ordering stuff on their website or some guy with a weird trick (no you cant see the weird trick)? Crazy to believe some people placed millions on that bet

usually I think it's bad when tech megacorporation buy off startups to remove competition and do acqui-hire but holy shit
