Midwestology 2: The Humble 24-Hour Diner, and Wrestling
Now unlocked to the $5 tier!
We've got Joe and Francis back to discuss the Midwest--a reverse Britainology, if you will--and we're discussing 24-hour diners, terrible fast food jobs, and the cultural weight of professional wrestling in the Rust Belt / Greater Midwest. Hope you enjoy!

39:45 wrestle talk starts
they mention both icp and wrasslin but not STRANGLEMANIA.
When will Midwestology 3 be out? Please let Joe and Francis be available and willing soon 🤞
Since this is now on the free feed, I'd like to address my current favorite gimmick in wrestling, which is Luigi Primo, the pizza chef wrestler
My childhood Ponderosa is now an auto parts shop, same building and looks fine just as Milo lathed
Donald Trump remains the only US President with an undefeated streak at WrestleMania
AWA in the eighties had a wrestler called Colonel DeBeers, who's gimmick was he openly supported the apartheid in South Africa.
13:00 From another video I watched about the resilience of Waffle House, they don't shut down even for hurricanes if they don't have to. Their storm playbook has procedures to keep the restaurants working without electricity, a natural gas hookup, internet access, or even water, as well as how to shut down the restaurant if necessary.
The McDonalds fudge story reminds me of the Epic Meal Time where they ask for a entire cup of Big Mac sauce and the dude is just immediately "yeah, sure, 8 bucks"
Hearing these customer service stories, it now really makes sense why Americans are such a rude arseholes in any public dining area setting. Fuck that. It's bad enough getting passive aggressively sniped at by middle class mums when I'm behind the till at Co-Op.
I FUCKING KNEW MOAN.WAV SOUNDED FAMILIAR auuuggghhh
Thank you for covering my homeland
Please could you post a link to the first Midwestology? I must have still been on a lower tier then & missed it (& can't find it now💔).
I’m not sure why I can’t make this a link but you can paste this into your browser. https://www.patreon.com/posts/midwestology-1-50260277?utm_medium=clipboard_copy&utm_source=copy_to_clipboard&utm_campaign=postshare
I loved every minute of that. Thank you so much💜xxx
When Milo uttered the words ‘Little Chef’ it was like a clown car full of sensory memories all tried to jam themselves into my brain at once
W.A.B Wet Ass Buffet
The idea of Muscle ballet must’ve really resonated with Darren aronofsky. I read an interview one time where he said he originally envisioned Black Swan and The Wrestler as one film, but once he actually started writing he felt he wouldn’t have time to do justice to either the pro wrestling world or the ballet world if he combined them
Muscle Ballet sounds like a Post Punk band, and I like that.
As someone who comes from a family where British and Midwestern collide together in an unholy mass, I appreciate these episodes so much.
I remember Fitz's had really good pickle chips. If I remember correctly we used to print out all their menus back when I worked at the copy place on Big Bend and Forest Park
The guy who played hassan is now school principal in New York state
The WWF/WWE as always been super "Support the Troops" The Biker Taker gimmick AKA American Bad Ass debuted at the May Judgement Day 2000 PPV. There's this insane section at Mania X7 which was April 2021 which has a highlight real of the WWF stars doing a rally for the troops. Since then they've held different Tribute to the Troops events including shows from Baghdad.
Can’t believe Francis used to work at Fitzs I used to go there all the time as a kid
Haha I needed this, this was great :)
I was genuinely entertained that Dominik is now an active wrestler on wwe mostly teaming with his real dad rey mysterio. It's hilarious seeing stills of them because rey is genuinely like 5'5" and his son just towers over him at 6'1"
My first job I worked was at a stand alone Cafe in a small Wisconsin town on the Michigan coast at the base of the peninsula. This was after they raised minimum wage to 7.25 I was a dishwasher and it was my summer job when I was 14 there was a loop hole in Wisconsin labor law where you could put someone on probationary wage for the first 3 months of employment which was 5.35 and the owner/manager used all three months. She also inflated my reported tips to diflect her tax liability.
Midwest tour leg when? Milo needs to experience a Detroit Coney.
I welcome the return of this
And I incourage it to return further
There literally is an Arcadia, Ohio. And one here in California, and Florida, and several other states. It’s also the name of a historical region in Odessa, “The” Ukraine (Milo’s favorite country).
incredible opening guys, well done.
Yes. Finally a new one.
