New Cumbernauld Man feat. Dan Boeckner
We brought on Dan Boeckner, musician from the bands Wolf Parade and Operators, podcaster with Riley from the show Bottlemen, to discuss a 1977 spy thriller called 'Cumbernauld HIT' set in Cumbernauld, Scotland. Except it was funded by the local council to promote Cumbernauld, using the film as a promo for the New Town and all its drab concrete labyrinth glory. Here is the spirit of Labourism, a new model community where society is building a new man who, crucially, does not jack off.

As someone who grew up in a similar albiet English new town a lot of this sounds very familiar. I kind of miss our horrible badly maintained and designed brutalist town centre. Which has now been replaced by a generic red brick and glass monstrosity.
After listening to this I was shocked that I hadn’t heard of it before. I’ve lived in Cumbernauld my whole life so when I saw this I realised how far the town has fallen. What was even more shocking was that the toy plane was piloted by MY FATHER when he was a 12 year old boy.
the bit about separating the car traffic from the pedestrians really remind me of a totally spooky experience I had in La Défense near Paris which I went to visit, intentionally, as a foreign tourist, because I am a giant nerd. The sidewalks were wholly above and separate from what one might term "streets". It was ... completely impossible to navigate. But I loved it unconditionally because I am, as I was saying, a giant nerd.
I'd say one of the big problems with "democracy in city planning" is that the only thing you get is brutal, ruthless, utterly uncompromising NIMBYism
Anyone seen the shitty modern incarnation of the Cumbernauld Hit. The Dubai Presents series; I honestly think it's one the most soulless things I've seen this year. Most of them are bog-standard - visit "x" style - city ads; but amongst that are two spoof ads for shit non-existent films. The shorter being "Lightning-Deadpool has had a lobotomy" and the longer "Jessica Alba and Zac Effron remake Mr & Mrs Smith for several millions of dollars - but it's still not enough to make either one of them emote". This is what we have now! Look at the wonders we have lost! LOW RESTS CUMBERNAULD; RAISED TO THE GROUND BY THE TEPID WARMTH OF ZAC EFFRON KIND-OF MAKING A PUN ABOUT . . . a guy not wanting his ?wife to come to a meeting . . . but then she does . . . and the pacing is set up for the punchline to be "oh, really?" but then it's actually "Ah, ah, ahh - no fighting." I think this is how we know labourism is doomed - because all it takes to raise it too the ground is half-arsed enthusiasm and shitty treats. It's fucked.
Just watched 'Cumbernauld, town for tomorrow', and it leaves me kind of sad. The premise seemed good, and it seemed to work in the PR film (don't know how much of that was staged, after all). Was it just let down by the insane fever dreams of the architects with a concrete fetish? Did the concept of community get wiped out by Thatcherism and the complete economic collapse? Was it simply a lack of investment in the infrastructure and services (and privatisation) that doomed everything? Otherwise, what can we do to stop capitalism dictating our living spaces?
social housing is like a workhouse
I'm speechless. just… wow.
The possibility of first contact with an alien race that have mastered interstellar spaceflight but are still impressed with Northampton is why we shouldn't have put directions on Voyager
Hey, I just joined and have been trying to access the Discord, but I'm not getting the invite. Is it supposed to take a day or two to come through?
Having had to hitchhike through Northampton---2017 was a weird year---l'm glad that its road links are so synthoniously commemorated.
Calgary was settled by Scots, Calgary a Scottish word. Homo calgaricus and new Cumberland man of the same cloth
Dan didn't get enough credit for the analogy of "municipal bumfights"
Imagine fleeing from the Neutron war to Northampton I’ve seen things you people wouldn’t believe Tbf there’s a band called Henge who literally did this and they’re fun
I've been to Skopje a few times. Since the last election, the nationalist lets antagonize Greece party is out and there are a bunch of bung facilitating projects from that government are just stopped and new projects are less of a pisstake. The first time I went, before last election, the city centre square was surrounded by brilliant white wedding cake style neoclassical buildings, and the ground was also white marble. This meant that the square effectively blinded you and acted as an oven. completely unusable. They also had flight of the valkyries playing on tannoys around the square.
True about Scotland and the film industry. The latest Indiana Jones sequel almost shafted my outing to Cathkin Braes the other day, by relocating half the bus stops in the centre of Glasgow

this episode provides some helpful context to this song: https://youtu.be/fDdD0FoLtQk
as an Edinburgh resident: Glasgow is cooler and Milo is right about edi feeling like disneyland, every time the fringe is on I am prepared to commit physical violence against the tourists
The thing is, all architecture has to be maintained, whether it's Brutalist or otherwise. The problem is, in addition to building all our social housing in the US and UK as cheaply as possible, there was zero budget set aside to actually care for it after it was finished. Council housing in Britain could all look like the Barbarian if the money had been spent on keeping it up.
I had to google what the fuck ‘compere’ meant, just say MC you posh nerd
this reminds me of the north malden icelandic saga society
Invest in MALDEN
When will the various original satirical songs featured on the podcast be released on Spotify, Apple Music, and Amazon Music? I would love to be able to listen to Yurt Vanderclurk in 24bit FLAC on Amazon Music HD.
Personally hoping for a Johannes Vonk bandcamp account so we can support our favorite defunct band on bandcamp Fridays
