Britainology 17: Top Gear

This week, Milo makes Nate watch the episode of Top Gear from 2006 where they go on a road trip from Miami to New Orleans. It's pure British boomer dad concentrated into its essence, and the viewing achieved the intended effect -- Nate got mad as hell. Hope you enjoy!

Extremely late comment but the reason the Post Room (or Mail Room if you prefer) would have AC when the rest of the building doesn't is because Air Conditioning removes moisture from the air. Places with a lot of paper documents that may be stored for quite a while need to be kept dry.

Just a heads up Top Gear did a special in the UK where they changed everybody’s first name to Nigel. Congrats Nate on your new role as Top Gear writer!

Any idea what season this episode is from?

How about one on the pastime of dressing up as a soldier for a weekend at a preserved railway to.... well I'm not sure? Either get away with dressing as a nazi or celebrate the history of railways in wartime or... well it's just British as fuck. Only we could create a whole heritage sector mostly funded by thomas the tank engine and nazi cosplay.

Please watch American top gear, not sure it's entertaining enough to be worth it but it's such an interesting oddity

Just a note that Clarkson and Morgan hate each other. Clarkson once decked Morgan at an awards ceremony in like 2002 or something. Both trash but I agree that out of the two of them, Clarkson is infinitely more likeable if only for this reason. United front against piers Morgan.

To get the dead cow Clarkson rang up the producers in the UK who then sourced it for him by ringing round. He then had several staff lift it up, who were not happy and nearly resigned. He is a fucking asshole.

Re: Richard Hammond before Top Gear- did I hallucinate him hosting a shit Mythbusters-type science~y show? Where they did stuff like pouring liquid nitrogen on burning thermite?

Yep, brainiac, but I think that was after Top Gear started, i.e. early mid 00s

What about a britainology on shagaluf and it's counterparts? I'm sure channel 4 has at least one 'documentary' on it.

Jeremy Clarkson is like the cool guy for gammon that they want to be

Jeremy Clarkson dunking on Jim Davidson is very very British Broadcasting Establishment

Also Never Mind the Buzzcocks was far worse when it wasn't just Simon Amstel ripping people to shreds

Everyone has the Stewart Lee joke opinion of Richard Hammond and to the most part it it is true, but I do have fond memories of Brianiac

Any potential Love Island Britainology?

Re: changing everyone's names to Nigel, Top Gear used that bit on an episode featuring the Top Gear Australia hosts. The Aussies called all of the Brits "Nigel" and the Brits called all the Aussies "Bruce"

I was expecting this to be just plain silly (and there were some hilarious moments), but holy shit it hit hard. I lived in Baton Rouge from 2008-2014, so I knew a lot of Katrina refugees, and it’s refreshing to hear someone get as angry about Katrina as the tragedy deserves.

Nate, you going hundy in this episode was important stuff and I'm grateful for your perspective as ever.

I’ll defend Sabine Schmidt specifically, as racing drivers go she was definitely one of the cooler and more interesting ones. She also kinda tragically passed away earlier this year

Stewart Lee also has a good Top Gear bit

nate getting mad as hell reminds me of my wife explaining why in her rural nc school they had to swish fluoride in the parking lot. very good.
