Magic: the Trans-ening feat. Juliet Jacques
It's the free one!
This week we have a packed studio featuring Riley, Milo, Hussein, Alice, and friend of the show Juliet Jacques (@zinovievletter) to discuss her new book Variations. However, we also discuss trouble in SoftBank world, a BBC article about how humans will evolve into two bifurcated species of Virgin and Chad, and--hence the title--a recent brain-melt Quillette article about how apparently anime and Magic: the Gathering make you trans.

Not looking forward to the Adobe Flesh future
The card that requires your opponent to become trans is banned from tournament play, so.
They must have removed it from Gatherer too because searching "Your opponent must ante one dick" came up blank.
as a former seismologist I can't really think of anything more likely to fail catastrophically in a very moderate magnitude earthquake than the nine elms pool
Sigma Male (nonbinary)
this article is basically saying that I, a male nerd who haven't boned anyone until my mid 20's, and think girls seem to have better luck boning people than I do, have a natural want to become a trans catgirl in order to have an easier time to bone girls. And that this is the sum total of the trans experience
"Fachidiot" is a real word in German, derived from "Fachexperte" (topic expert) and means "topic idiot".
i’ve had it explained to me more than a decade ago - so it might have evolved in meaning - as someone who is an expert in their field, but a moron in everything that’s not their area
Can somebody enlighten a non-British person about what exactly makes Brighton so annoying?
I'm convinced every country has a Brighton, in that they all have a rusting, coastal, tourist city that should have been condemned decades ago and that is kept alive by the mutually assured illusions of entertainers pretending a crowd is good, the crowd pretending the crap food and bad weather aren't ruining any fun they COULD have, and the nation as a whole treating it like a point of pride and not like it should be taken out the back and demolished like old yeller. The PM (in light of covid restrictions) suggested recently that Brits should "holiday at home" (meaning within the UK) and the scar on the nations psyche left by Brighton is such that many people interpreted this as a deliberate insult.
Def oyo rooms
Hussein being mostly quiet fo the first half then bursting out with Cruel Angel's Thesis is life affirming.
correcting riley on the diff between yuri and yaoi too. phenomenal
A Thousand Words is the Eddie Murphy Riley is thinking of.
sounds normal "In April 2021, it was claimed by several news reports and social media posts that OYO had filed for bankruptcy,[20][21] but CEO Ritesh Agarwal clarified it to be untrue.[20][22][23] However he admitted that the National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT) initiated a insolvency resolution process on OYO Hotels on the basis of a hotelier's petition over a monetary dispute with the company.[23][20]"

Ok, the Russians developed a brain ray that gives you an anxiety disorder. Does that mean that the CIA is recruiting people that already have anxiety disorders as a countermeasure?
One of the main things about Magic: the Gathering, in contrast to other fantasy escapism, is how little it involves transformation. Each card has a single illustration* and permanent buffs are marked with counters (like beads or dice) which are used sparingly due to logistical limitations. Additional, because the cards are physically printed on cardboard the creators are incredibly reluctant to change specifics what a card does (ignoring minor misprints it has only happened once in magic's 27 year history) and opt instead to ban troublesome cards from tournament play outright. An online game like World of Warcraft would handle similar problems by just releasing a patch which adjusts how much damage a longsword does or whatever. In this way M:tG can be seen as "stat essentialist" where most online games are "stat fluid" *a few sets have involved Double Faced Cards which have 2 illustrations, one on each side. Those sets used the novelty of how some of the cards can change as a selling point.
The implication of this analysis of M:tG, is that as a transforming minority that look out for each other as they are persecuted by society and medical means are applied to them to force them to change back (unsuccessfully), trans people are in fact all secretly incredibly powerful werewolves. To which i can only say That's Right! (Though shoutout to 'Alesha, who smiles at death' for forcing people to recognise her pronouns simply by killing a dragon first, thereby having a magical analogue to getting a GRC in England, only easier.)
To add to Riley's theory that all the state department operatives were just drunk rather than hit by a super secret commie mindray, if you scan the brains of alcoholics then they tend to have disproportionate loss of white matter compared to healthy subjects of the same age. The state department publicising that their employees have less white matter than their peers is absolutely just admitting that they're all massive drunks.
