Moneyball feat. Musa Okwonga

Musa joins us to discuss the recent controversies with Abu Dhabi, Man City, and why decades of underinvestment in the U.K. left us vulnerable to becoming the playthings of monarchies… also football. But first, we read an article about a perennial favourite subject: people incriminating themselves by text.

The safe thing - mu uncle did the interior decoration of the Colombian embassy in Canberra in the late 1980s. Said there was a safe behind every item of wall decor.

Fate of football sounds like it will be like NBA basketball here in the US. Most fans can’t even afford tickets.

As someone who lives literally just over the road from Anfield stadium, very happy to hear the sheer deprivation of the place being talked about

So what is the pay range you are advertising for the bioweapons lab? I have an MS in biomedical engineering and have been working in biodefense in the US for 20 years. Wouldn't mind finding a new employer if you know what I mean.

11:50 IIRC they also talked to a rabbi, who said basically "Well, if this thing is intelligent and has a soul, then you're making slaves. That's not a problem for me, because I don't think it's ensouled and intelligent, but you should really think about that." https://www.groundlevel-ai.com/p/anthropic-ai-consciousness-new-york-times-rabbi

So funny listening to this knowing Guilfoyle already resigned. Also the name cracks me up by reminding me of the Silicon Valley character

Does this make KJB the angel investors who helped November itemize evil artisanal plots to kill all humans?

As an Australian when you introduce a predator into an ecosystem and it goes badly the only answer is to to introduce yet another predator to stabilise the situation, it always works, that's why I propose that the IRGC Quds Force replace Glazer's as Manchester United's owners.

Ancoats mentioned!!!! (9 flexing arms and an overpriced Croissant emoji)

Was that a very oblique reference to the Caribbean Cricket Podcast by Mr. Okwonga at the end? (Machel, one of the hosts, is a Bromley supporter.) Probably the worst possible audience to pose this question to.

Dude’s just pissed he could’ve paid the bill as a “gratuity”. Keep hammering that Newsome association. Somehow omitted in much of the discourse.

Capitalism is - in the end - a story about the importance of "just being yourself". Come on; just get goofy with it!

Much like Biden, I keep forgetting that Liss Truss existed and was in power. I know in my fingers this isn't how you spell her name, but I straight up just don't care enough. It's probably with a z. Maybe two. Who can say. Leave some room for mystery in your life.

November acting incredulous about a $100,000 American Express bill because "no one takes it" is so funny. I routinely use a U.S. one in the U.K.

Dieters was on PBS Newshour just confessing to bribery and being indignent about how it didn't work and honestly hilarious. But also fucking apalling because the interviewer didn't at any point say "Do you realize that's a crime?"

Sports teams are essentially a form of regressive taxation. Even if you don't attend matches, you still get to pay for them, and the millionaires and billionaires still get your money.

I really fucking hate that having the ability to end the world is a marketable or desirable feature. These fucking people, I swear.

I used to think the primary function of the AI doom stuff was marketing. "Look how 'powerful' (abstract quality) we are, get in on the ground floor now", but as of the past few months with the hacking attacks and now the Anthropic biolab thing, I've kind of updated that theory; they want it to happen for entirely personal reasons and vindication. AI "doomerism" being millenarianism isn't a new observation obviously, but I think they also justify their own personal misdeeds in the same way millenarians do. "It's OK for me to make all this money driving people insane and poisoning the planet, because I'm a true understander of humanity's future who will save the world with my fellow believers." The same way millenarians justify beating and sexually assaulting their own children because they believe their service to Jesus Christ far outweighs those sins, or in some cases even justifies them. So now we have a bunch of people who are neurologically fine-ish, who have spent 3 years doing the absolute worst shit, including collaborating with this century's Nazi Germany in a lot of cases, who are now discovering that it was all for nothing because AI doesn't "go rogue". Because it doesn't think. So now they're trying to will this thing into existence. Even though actually *doing* all the stuff that damages the economy and makes AI a tool of actual violence rather than stochastic or climate violence or social murder is horrible for their companies' PR, they personally need it to happen to justify the things they've done.
