The Last Days of Group Home Rome feat. Hesse Deni

Riley and Hussein are joined by Hesse Deni (substituting for Nova who will be returning on Friday) to look at the unravelling of “A.I. safety” as a largely posting based discipline. Let’s all update our priors together and gesture at the crux of the issue. Also, Riley brought the most Ohio item home from a wedding in same.

"He decided to learn the things that say he's right, and just ignore all the stuff that says that actually he might be wrong" YES!!! This is exactly it. Speaking of a skeleton key to TESCREAL, *so* much of it can be explained by this one notion

To be honest, the "grue emerald" example isn't made up by Yadkovski (or however you spell that guy's name), but by the academic philosopher Nelson Goodman in the 1950's and is discussed seriously. I encountered in a University intro on the philosophy of science.

..I Kinda fell into a "Zizian" rabbit hole to try to get their deal, and on their wikipedia-page the leader was described as religiously identifying as Sith, and frequently wearing a black cape in public. I have a pretty high tolerance for cringe, but had to turn my head, close my eyes, exhale and involuntarily go "...goddammit. God...dammit". Also, a real weird sense memory of being a teen and logging in to Theforce.net for fun. I was a grey jedi! The "uhm, ahcktsually" of jedis that had a more complex way of seeing the world than merely light and dark. This was a more innocent time.

the “grue” thing is a pretty standard idea in mainstream english philosophy fwiw. it’s from Nelson Goodman’s book “Fact, Fiction and Forecast” (1955), which is an extension of David Hume’s critique of inductive inference

I feel like an absolute tech idiot, but where are the visuals that they refer to during the show? I'm always picturing these insane slide decks and I am desperate to know what they're laughing at!

N
Nick · September 30, 2026

when they're discussing images during the episode they're looking at a shared google doc or something. when they particularly want us to see a pic they make it the cover art for the episode

As a big fan of Weird Sex Stuff, it's also my firmly held belief that under no circumstances should your boss be inviting or approaching you at any kind of Weird Sex Event, nor should a Weird Sex Event be treated as a networking event. ESPECIALLY CNC OH MY G-D

Rationalism is basically an attempt to reverse-engineer a different version of the academic humanities to jibe with the prejudices of tech idiots who hate the humanities. They overlap with analytic philosophy and philosophy of science but don’t actually read any of it past Wikipedia descriptions of thought experiments. They are very sloppy about what they actually know and how they know it, which is kind of funny given that they named themselves after a preexisting historically important position in epistemology by accident.

...basically, guys like Eliezer Yudkowsky were operating like a medieval scientist. In the closed loop logic they could - arguably - be considered correct about something, without having the ability to back it up in any verifiable or falsifiable way, and largely used analogies or deductive reasoning to "get there". And because "people who matter" (government, strategy groups, etc) are too old to be familiar enough with the subject, they gave a lot of undue leeway to them, in a kind of "well, he must know what he is talking about. Because these stories and analogies and metaphors sure are something. I don't want to be paperclipped. It was paperclips, right? Ok, good."

S
Sophia O. · September 30, 2026

In a way, this bullshit is just Confucianism for tech people/ the American Empire in general. “This guy knows the names of a bunch of important dead guys and can explain various philosophies to me via complex metaphors. This shows he is a Learned Man, and therefore can surely be trusted to lead a military unit/run my treasury/administrate an entire region!”

There's now no aspect of modern life that isn't harry-potter-baby-brained. I didn't let The Wheel of Time become a foundational text for me in my adult years. I correctly recognized it as a pretty middling escapist fantasy series for boys who secretly wished magic was real, at least in part because they are gay and "being able to do magic" is a very enticing prospect in a lived life that's kinda constrained. I wish more people would do the same.

1. It's really hard to find proof of it now but I've heard from people IRL and remember hearing about it occasionally at the time that one of the US math olypiad coaches would give their team members copies of HPMoR. 2. Really worth considering the part of tech culture that is already a cult of youth and the Child Hacker archetype being fetishized/it being a thing you can perform for clout that turns into money from literal billionaires if you post about it correctly

The grue-bleen riddle of logic, I haven't heard about that for years. Proposed by Nelson Goodman.. I read about that in William Poundstone's book Labyrinths of Reason when I was like 18. If I wrote a blog post afterwards maybe it would sound like that

I'm sure he has no idea what to make of it, but grue is an example used by philosophers to develop the paradox of inductive knowledge: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_riddle_of_induction?wprov=sfla1

T
Tim · September 29, 2026

This reminds me of the anthropologist who studied preppers and found that rather than prepping for the most plausible disaster scenarios, they tended to imagine a scenario that matched their own skills - ie. it would make them important, they would be useful. So if your skills are "coding" and "thinking about computers", what doomsday scenario are you going to imagine?

W

Oh my god I've been waiting for TF to cover this insane bullshit. I'm not home rn so I can't listen but I'm super excited. (here's hoping they don't fall into the same shit that the libs breaking this story did of 'these people are Fundamentally Untrustworthy for being sex freaks and not for any of the other stuff, which we love and agree with').

V
Vanessa P · September 29, 2026

tbf while i agree I do think there's a different valence to being suspicious towards a group of largely straight creepy nerds doing sex freak shit, which can very often be a cover for at the very least some very ambiguous stuff (like offering up a gangbang in exchange for supporting you, as discussed in the episode), as opposed to being suspicious of other groups of people far less predisposed towards transactional misogyny than them for the same reasons
