Silencing Bronze Age Voices feat. Donald Campell

Riley speaks to Foxglove’s Donald Campbell about the campaign to prevent Palantir from working with the NHS, but before we get to that, we have to talk about… fictive elven graves. And real Bronze Age burial sites. And a man in Texas who’s willing to move heaven and earth in order to view anime.

The first half of this episode is a welcome throwback to the golden age of the show (if you swap out the Corbyn Mania for Tar the Toffee).

YOU DONT UNDERSTAND. It took me FOUR YEARS to get my crunchyroll subscription cancelled. A full YEAR after they DELETED MY ACCOUNT DATA AND I COULD NO LONGER LOG IN BECAUSE I DID NOT EXIST IN THEIR DATABASE, THEY CHARGED ME A YEARLY SUBSCRIPTION FEE. I finally literally had to get my bank involved and document all my attempts at cancelling my subscription and I have to stress, CRUNCHYROLL BY ITSELF NEVER DID CANCEL MY SUBSCRIPTION, afaik the bank just removed the account routing to them. Sorry for yelling, I’ve been screaming at the car speakers this whole time. Brilliant episode

Just to clear a few things up: there is "no Mr. Anime Man." There is "The Anime Man" (Joseph "Joey" Tetsuro Bizinger) an Australian Youtuber who lives in Japan and is currently engaged to his longtime sweetheart. And then there is "Mr. Anime" (Trey Eric Sesler), a Texan anime YouTuber who in 2012 murdered his whole family and tried to shoot up a school before being arrested. He is now serving a life sentence without parole.

I think the allure of Harry Potter and what drives people to become Harry Potter adults is that the fantasy there is of getting to be a special boy who gets picked out of obscurity and is immediately recognized for his talents and cleverness and everyone loves him and that is more appealing to the ego a person who privately innately understands themselves to be a huge loser though they'll never admit that, where Paddington is about imagining getting to be friends with a cool bear, which I think is objectively a better thing to desire but requires a level of maturity beyond these people's grasp.

I think the allure of Harry Potter is that for a lot of people it's the first book they read without being assigned to it for school

Does it help to know the power connector stuff was made up on a podcast for a bit and not real, and it was just credulous low quality reporting that turned this into a story?

fresh west is a beautifully desolate and stormy beach, huge roiling waves mirrored by the sand dunes which extend for miles back like some kind of otherworldly landscape - extraterrestrial, even. It is a gorgeously liminal space, ecologically and poetically fascinating, and it PISSES ME OFF ENDLESSLY!!! THAT ITS THE FUCKING HOLY PILGRIMAGE SIGHT OF THE WORLDS MOST SOULLESS GHOULS!!!

The crazy thing about palantir is that, you get yourself a few statisticians, data scientists/analysts, DBAs and you can do whatever they are doing, probably much better. It's all about normalizing the data, the way you store it is not that important. Postgres, DuckDB, MSSQL, or the british choice, an excel file, all can handle frightening numbers of rows and analytics.

I hate Dobby. I can't believe people would mourn that little sock goblin. Harry Potter condones and normalizes slavery.

Dobby would go on Wizard Fox News and explain how woke abolitionists are actually hurting the elf slaves somehow.

the idea of institutions bending to fandom outcry is interesting to me because something like the harry potter fandom is obviously a paper tiger. they're not going to do Kidlit Jan 6, are they. yet the good people at whatever body the "outcry" is targeted at often feel the need to appease them. reminds me of how the "cancel culture" panic was enflamed by e.g. celebrities' PR teams responding to the complaints of completely random people online, and this kneejerk cowardice was then distorted into TERRIFYING ONLINE MOBS EXTORT CHERISHED PUBLIC FIGURE by the media. and then reactionaries took advantage of the same instinct of "pls don't get mad at me" to successfully submit complaints over e.g. trans inclusion, even though they too are a very small group of largely paper tigers

Vanessa P · August 11, 2026

Okayyyyy so turns out the reason why this dobby's grave story sounds so outrageous is that it didn't fucking happen and the infrastructure guy on the podcast the story originated on was full of shit lol: https://backofmind.substack.com/p/chortle-on-a-chortle
