In my city of Brisbane they slashed public transport from like $2 - 4 AUD to 50 cents flat rate and ridership went through the fucking roof overnight. They even had to pull out the older buses for some routes to deal with the extra-capacity, like the Russians pulling out the T-55s to be chewed up by Ukraine. Because the network is barely a passing grade, in that somebody like me who doesn't drive can generally get around the city but there will always be delays and cancelled services and it can sometimes take me two hours and three transfers to get into work from the outer suburbs to the CBD, but at least it's cheap and I am getting what I pay for, which is good enough for most people to make the change from private to public commute. Making public transport good after decades of car-centricity is hard; requiring the hiring and retention of drivers, the expansion of the fleet, and the building of infrastructure like bus lanes taking years of focused investment and political will that few mainstream parties have the stomache or inclination for. But making it cheap, could be done overnight with the stroke of a pen by a desperate Labor government attempting to cling on to power by actually doing something for the working class. And the result was less traffic for the car-brained areseholes who insist on driving to their job in the CBD and paying $30 a day for parking as it made econmic sense for the more rationale people to leave their owns cars at home. TLDR; Nova's righteous outrage at these idiots is on fucking point and I would be yelling alongside her if I wasn't on the bus right now and expressing solidarity through courtesy to my fellow passengers.
