Astronaut 9/11 feat. Failure to Launch
Quinn from the Failure to Launch (FTL) podcast joins us to discuss exactly how space travel became an adjunct to a racist chatbot. Also, we discuss the high water mark of chudness and what exactly Peter Murrell bought with all his SNP money.

Yer da bought Avon with public funds?
I quit working as an engineer in the LA space industry because I was sick of working for rich idiots. Definitely have some stories from that period of my life, but glad to not be in it anymore.
Omg, Swedens prime Minister has the same scandal where he and his wife bought (among other gauche things) a bread spade for an insane amount of money
QUINN! YES!!!!
I'm sorry, I'm relistening to this after reading FlyingRodent's thread on it and really paying attention to the items, and what do you mean it's possible to buy *a thirty-five HUNDRED pound coaster!!??* Yeah, definitely on to something w/the luxury goods thing.
Everytime you all say “get guys from the town to do it” I think you mean the Ben Affleck bank robber movie and brace myself for some amazing Boston accent work.
Thought you guys were saying the telescope WEIGHED 1200 pounds.
To be fair, Avon skin so soft is also a necessary expense to fend off the midgies
Title for the first half "Sicario: 1.11 You Are (Not) Chud"
When is Milo back?
Never
The “right stuff” was being a flyboy and those dudes have a Certain Personality Type For Sure #brawlEnsues
I hate the rude chatbot Rick and Morty monopoly.
The Avon skin so soft absolutely a campaign expense: you need to keep the midgies away when you're driving your campaigning van round the Highlands and Islands XD
I will never stop finding spanish "tap ass" amusing.
Pretty interesting episode and I thought the guest was good so I don’t want to critique too much but there were a couple really goofy thing he said that really made me roll my eyes. The first one is when he said Muk wasn’t that involved in engineering at SpaceX but did some. Like yeah, no. No way he was involved at all. I don’t think the guy can solve a differential equation. Furthermore, even if he contributed as much as a single average engineer, which there’s no way he did, there are literally thousands of them, so his technical contributions would be basically .01% or something. The second was when he talked about how scary the Chinese space program was LMFAO.
I think they meant scary as in like "I don't understand it and it scares me", since they were saying it in relation to how it's set up, with design bureaus and private companies doing like ghost in the shell shit to eachother, as opposed to scary as in "ooh the sneaky chinese are gonna get us".
Shocked to discover a lack of knowledge of hiking arcana among the TF crew. Avon Skin So Soft is commonly used as an insect repellent by UK walkers and campers, so I'm guessing this is part of the campervan package along with the guidebooks, rather than for treating anyone's dry itchy scalp.
hahahaha I literally thought this as soon as I heard it, this was for midges
my mother is dead-set on the idea that it is entirely believable that Sturgeon had no idea about the various pens, watches, etc but *only* because she is also convinced they were in a lavender marriage and thus had little interaction
to be clear this is *not* a homophobic thing, she believes they were tragically forced into a lavender marriage by the homophobia of scottish society
I'll be referring to him solely as Small Plates Andy from now on, thanks
my grandfather was an engineer who worked on semiconductors and lived in the same Ohio town as Neil Armstrong post-moon landing fame. Neil was a pilot during Korea and my grandpa was a sailor at the same time, and Neil was a part-owner of the company my grandpa eventually became the general director of. apparently he was a genuine Midwest-nice kind of guy, pretty humble, pretty pious later in life
What Nova says about the need to spend money you have on things you don't need simply because you have it was one of many things that Terry Pratchett perfectly summed up (and yes, this is the second comment where I mention/quote him on a podcast released this Fri featuring Nova, but it's his fault for being so bloody good): "I’ve made a lot of money out of the writing. A considerable amount. But I am horizontally wealthy, which is the way to go. I advise you all to consider horizontal wealth. If you are vertically wealthy, you think “I am rich. So I had better do what rich people do.” What do rich people do? Well, they find out where the hell Gstaad is, and then they go skiing there. They buy a yacht. They may go to beaches a long way away. Well, first of all, never buy a yacht. Yachts are like tearing up hundred-pound notes while standing under a cold shower. A nail, a perfectly ordinary nail, costs five times as much if it is a nautical nail. My PA is on at me to buy a light aircraft because he could fly it, but he was training to be a fighter pilot and maybe it wouldn’t be a good idea. But horizontal wealth means not letting your increased income dictate your tastes. You like books and now you have money? Buy more books! Change those catenary bookshelves for good hardwood ones! In my case, build a library extension to your office. And, of course, you buy what will be useful for that most wonderful of pursuits, blind research, which is research without direction for the sheer joy of it." Horizontal Wealth is, say, having Five Podcasts money and spending it on lesbians and vintage cameras, whereas Vertical Wealth is whatever the fuck the former Mr. Nicola Sturgeon was doing.
Terry Pratchett was such a treasure, and I'm SO glad there still hasn't been any secret dark stuff to come out about him. His books were my entire 20s and really helped open my mind to a different and more positive way of seeing the world and people.
Corruptly purchased
Whenever the hosts unload on that silly Toffee I get the urge to go back and listen to episodes from the darkest days of Corbyn boosterism.
But was the goose valued? (Yes I know this is coming next episode but come on, Softbank couldn't even do "eggs out their arses" proper.)
We need to bioengineed the dodovampire; a huge, guileless parasite bird that attaches to its prey and slowly drains it of lifeforce/blood/nutrients. we might need to bioengineer a species for it to be parasitic towards... carbon-sequestering sky turtles with hydrogen-filled floatation sacs
we aren't going to space, it's fine, there's nothing out there worth getting
yippeee !
wow 703-2026 he sure loved shaming women for being shit alewives
Quick correction on the "DOGE fired a bunch of people then rehired them back" thing. That's somewhat true for some people who got fired but all the lower level workers who got laid off or told to take deferred resignation (because there's no severance) were just outright fired and many of those positions haven't been brought back. My entire team was let go and we sure as hell never got a "hey you wanna come back?" message. They're still trying to push through even more cuts to government workers' pay and healthcare.
There's still a DOGE to do that with?
Huh, neat that this comes up the same day I rewatch the WTYP Space Shuttle ep.
for some reason my first thought on seeing the title was "wait, wasn't astronaut 9/11 just 9/11", which is obviously an insane thing to think. not sure what sort of subconscious understanding of the events of that day I must have had. help i don't think my brain works
i do think it'd be a good bit if the saudis tried to do a space program and they accidentally fired the rocket into the *new* WTC
Oh G-d, this is an episode about my trauma specifically. *sighs through gritted teeth* Okay. Let's talk about the commercial space industry. It died in the Virgin Galactic crash, and I'm out $135,000 on a patently useless education.
Also, fuck anyone who said NASA stopped doing things, in my lifetime we've gotten high res images of most of Saturn's absurd number of moons, landed a probe in the mud of one of those moons and flew through the active geysers of another, and discovered an atmosphere on Pluto. I'm sorry, but they're wrong about that, NASA has done incredible, inspiring, beautiful work. They're just very humble and their public communication team is for shit.
