No Bedtime for the Far Right feat. Daniel Trilling

Britain inches closer to legislating a national bedtime for rowdy teens and there’s another ministerial resignation over an inability to make it 1942 again by science or magic. In the second half, Daniel Trilling joins us to discuss his new book If We Tolerate This, an exploration of how the British far right and the recent riots thereof was enabled by the respectable centre.

It is getting reeeeeealllly boring now, " the far right ". But hey ho, let us play semantics in this game... The far left organisation are the Labour Party, Greens, European Union, United Nations etc etc, extremists of the worst order..purveyors of white genocide by mass immigration, lunatic climate change fruitcakes, apologists for satanic Islamic theology, all these groups are so HATEFUL OF FREEDOMS and the civilised Christian west... Despicable " far - lefties "🇬🇧🇬🇧🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🇮🇱🙏🇮🇱🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🇬🇧🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🇮🇱🙏

What's striking to me is that as billionaires intervene more and more often with the affairs of foreign countries is that nobody has put one in a suitcase yet. You know it is going to happen eventually. Maybe when Russia runs out of domestic oligarchs.

It’s notable that some of the phone and browser companies have added free vpns to their products pretty much simultaneously with the social media bans. The Australian ban was an election promise but I’m not sure it was a passion project for any of the MPs. No one’s claiming credit. We definitely are not messing around with curfews for over 16s.

I mean yeah, I said the same thing a few comments up but it seems to my mind that all this stuff is dancing around the fact that kids are little shits? And that a lot of leftoid commentators are now at the age where they find that unpalatable and are seeking social solutions to it. It's kinda humbling. Age comes for us all.

I'm afraid that any kind of "this is a good idea but" formulation misses the basic point, which is that any government policy targeted at eroding the rights of teenagers is a dry run for eroding the rights of everybody else

I'm going to die on the unpopular hill that when Elon Musk turned X into an AI deep fake child porn factory something had to be done. And literally the only tool government has is some kind of a ban. Anything less than that does nothing. Social media platforms could not give fewer fucks about Ofcom or whoever. So, yeah, fuck it. Nothing of value is being lost anyway, just a bunch of Skinner Boxes run by the worst freaks on the planet.

C
Cate Kneale · June 16, 2026

Fair. It just won't work and will steal everyone's data again. If we could actually ban social media for everyone then I could easily get all East German about it which is to say, do it and impose state control of all the wires but also there will be compulsory proper hobbies and funding of arts.

The thing about defence spending is it doesn't matter how necessary any of it is, we just are incapable of using any money spent on defence in a way which justifies it.

Dan in ADL · June 16, 2026

I’m in South Australia where the social media ban comes from (our Labor right pushed it) but it’s worked pretty well so far. It’s not perfect but it’s noticeable improved a bunch of stuff for kids and made it easier for parents to manage how young kids use devices. That said it would have been a nightmare for parents of 14 and 15 year olds. The curfew is a British twist, but the point of the law here was to treat social media more in the way that we treat media companies (rather than giving them their own carve out because it’s on the computer) and that the companies can get off the banned list for kids if they make a child focused product (eg YouTube isn’t banned because YouTube kids exists).

Re Ulsterisation: before the race riots two years ago, the only place you would see many St George's crosses and Union Jack's would be in loyalist areas of northern Ireland

G

On the unionist - British far right links: I was surprised no one mentioned Britain First, founded in Belfast of all places. What was that, maybe ten years ago now?

China does something similar with Video Games and Minors: https://theconversation.com/china-restricted-young-people-from-video-games-but-kids-are-evading-the-bans-and-getting-into-trouble-245264 So Starmer is just Chinamaxxing really. tl;dr - It doesn't really work with 77% of kids finding a way around age verification.

A
AnnoyingSpanishGuy · June 16, 2026

At some point it's just training kids to think outside the box

V
Vanessa P · June 16, 2026

It is interesting to see, as someone far closer in age to "the kids" than probably most listeners, just how utterly detached from the actual reality of how young people talk about and relate to the dang phones the media discourse about it is? I see all sorts of commentary which is essentially implying that all young people who use phones are going to lose their innocence, see choking porn, and immediately get groomed or whatever (this podcast included btw). The way gen Z actually relate to their phones is, obviously, more nuanced and most of us, even the younger ones, *are* able to recognise how the social structures of social media can harm us. We have lives away from phone, believe it or not! tbh I suspect it was far more unhealthy to be a young millennial on the early internet what with all the very insular fora and shock content.

G
George Toner · June 16, 2026

My grandma and her (former) friends are literally vaccinated against smallpox. She didn't use the internet. They use Facebook dozens of hours a week Guess who now doesn't believe in (smallpox) vaccines And guess who the great(-great-) grandkids like speaking to and vice versa. They don't always get each other, as you'd expect, but they do know that they have interesting things to say or at least they're interested in what they're interested in by proxy Guess who can't even bear to speak to their (traitorous, treasonous, terrifying) descendants

G
George Toner · June 16, 2026

Fellas, is it a sign your country is doing really well when Pauline Hanson's crew love what you're doing but despite desperately badly wanting to don't think they can get away with it yet I do hate to bring up the trite 'failure of imagination' cliche, but the liberal mind really can't conceive of this manner of thing as being anything but the beginning of the end - of fascism discrediting itself by being so extreme that it's dug its own grave and is actively shoveling itself in. Rather than, you know, the end of the beginning. Of liberals pitching in to help fascists dig what they are absolutely sure must be the latter's graves. Because it's not the people in the moment that decide who goes in, it's 'history' or 'progress' itself. The divine has dictated that fascism will be buried and so they have nothing to fear. Facts and logic are on their side They are half-right. Fascists will be buried. But at this rate, there won't be liberals to help with the shoveling

b

Hillery Clinton was infamous among alot of millennials as the woman who tried to ban Grand theft auto. Banning social media for teens is going to create blowback for labor not seen since Iraq.

S

V
Vanessa P · June 16, 2026

Al Carns' shtick is pretty funny because here's a guy who clearly doesn't understand his own team's scheme. "Wow this defence procurement sure is inefficient and doesn't produce any material results, instead funneling endless money to defence contractors!" Yeah man. That's the aim. That's the scam being pulled here. If you were 2% smarter you'd recognise that and just wait to become like an advisor or board member at one of those companies.

V
Vanessa P · June 16, 2026

Also military keynesianism, even if it does create defence jobs, produces far less overall benefit for society than spending the exact same amount of money on literally anything else, right? Even if spending on defence creates defence jobs, at the end of the process what you are producing is essentially a thing that can only destroy economic value, whereas a school continually produces value over the course of its existence. So surely if you wanted to do the blah blah blah jobs blah blah growth shit defence spending would be the *worst* thing to do with the money you have.
