Fair Working Apathy feat. Emiliano Mellino

Emiliano Mellino from TBIJ joins us to discuss the upcoming (and some might say shortcoming) Fair Working Agency, and we ask the perennial question: will it stop bosses from ripping you off? But first, we look at an article praising an innovative business owner for giving himself the early stages of AI psychosis.

Check out Emiliano's work here!

*MILO ALERT * Check out Milo’s tour dates here:
https://www.miloedwards.co.uk/liveshows

*MUSIC ALERT* As Riley mentioned, the outro music for this episode is "Jerusalem (Worst Nightmare)" by Second Homes, which is in fact Nate's band. And since TODAY is Bandcamp Friday, any purchases you make for any artist on Bandcamp are free of fees, meaning artists keep 100% of the purchase amount. You can preorder Second Homes's album here!

Since everyone totally cares about this, nate, the big radar plane is the E-3 sentry, its a platform from the 60s, Boeing [orchestral horror jumpscare sound] is developing a replacement called the E-7 wedgetail. It does not have a wedge tail, i dunno if thats a bird or what, its just a newer smaller airliner-y fuselage with a long box shaped aesa radar on top instead of the E-3's spinning disk, theoretically more able to detect modern stealthy aircraft, Australia is already using them and they seem fine but im sure Boeing will find a way to fuck up the ones they sell to the air force

Emiliano's combination of london and italian pronunciation produced a heretofore unheard "innit"🔥👏awesome accent

The relationship between that Nguyen fellow and his AI genuinely reminds me so much of The Index from the Project Moon verse. Prescripts and all.

this 'AI turns you into an llm' feels like the thing I fall into within a couple minutes when i try to use the web search chatbot offerings: I end up asking it about its own output to get it to address the contradictions, so in other words I'm doing basic critical thinking skills at it, operating as a kind of menial intellectual labour reverse centaur; like it's not even a trillion dollar rubber duck anymore, it's a trillion dollar machine and i'm its volunteer rubber duck. like i'm not super self-aware here, but i struggle to relate to what level of self awareness somebody is operating on if they do this and figure it's all cool

Second Homes is sick any chance of a physical style release?

T
Trashfuture · May 1, 2026

Yes! we're looking at doing CDs + tapes for live shows late this year, and we're eventually going to try to do a vinyl release as well (it's just that it's a long process and very expensive)

The aircraft with the giant radar dish on it is called an AWACS. I'm sorry that I know this, but growing up with the world's largest airplane nerd for a father has some side effects.

The Kegsbreath bench video with sounded suspiciously light for 315. He also posted a video benching clearly light bumper plates (10kg plates, so a total bench of around 80kg). Barely hits it. Zero chance the 315 bench is legit if he can barely hit 200.

M
Matthew Chalko · May 1, 2026

Totally agree. I think the plates on the inside have 10kg written on them. The form is all off. He’s not tight enough, his lats aren’t engaged, his grip is way too close.

I will never forget when the flu rampaged through my husband's navy ship in the mid 10's and they were all mandatory beta cuck vaxxed. It took 2 months for them to stop doing double duty to cover all the sick leave.

e
etienne · May 2, 2026

they should make other parts of the military optional too, actually. You should be able to just opt out of a deployment or an especially annoying maintenance chore because you don't feel like it. Actually the whole military should be comprised of enlightened individuals seeking optimal self-interest

l'm guessing that RIley didn't intend this, but l heard "Once in a lifetime experience" and my brain immediately gets Byrned and starts intoning There is water at the bottom of the ocean Under the water, carry the water Remove the water at the bottom of the ocean

6:41 - the thing Nate is talking about is the crossing the line ceremony. It's mostly crossing the equator. It's a rite of passage, which is just a way of saying ancient ritualized hazing. There is some cosplay, including a "royal baby," i forget why, but that person has crossed the line before. There is a tradition of crossdressing-ish related to that, but historically all branches did some kind of cross dressing thing. Hung Cao is one of those Christians who is terrified of not fitting in with other Christians, so he's performing "the MOST Christian," and it's such a shabby performance. It's the Navy, man, let people cross dress as a bit and swim through garbage water, if you can't accept that as tradition, maybe this isn't the job for you.

Like the people with AI girl/boyfriends, I have to wonder whether these tech guys would be so excited about the machine replacing them if they could no longer control the machine

W
Wawawawa · May 2, 2026

I think they would. This is a little complicated to articulate, but I think what's important to them is the "person" setting the terms for their life has no dignity or restraint. It's a similar thing with total submission to fascism. It justifies their way of being as it's annihilating it.

That shit with the AI is Deleuze/Guattari masochism! Becoming a fully integrated node of a mechanism that allows forces to pass across and through you. Dude is fucking deterritorialising his selfhood, but his dom is capitalism. Becoming-cancer.
