Dr. Dinner’s Lament feat. Luke Savage
Luke returns to discuss Mark KKKarney’s failure to reform the Canadian state in the face of a global crisis for middle powers, and the emergence of a new leader on the left with a few ideas about grocery stores that may just work, if they can get past a certain Food Professor, that is.

Even if the "food professor" were correct, it's like talking about the Postal Service in the US. It doesn't "lose" money, it *costs* money, because that's how a service works. Plus providing people with more security and stability, like letting them get food for free, frees them up to spend more money elsewhere, stimulating the economy as a whole
Can’t believe Milo isn’t on an episode about a Canadian food professor called Dr. Dinner
i think part of the function of highly-paid idiot consultants like, and I cannot believe I'm typing these words, The Food Professor doing the infomercial "I can't perform mundane tasks" bit is to model performative ignorance as intelligentsia for the reader. they aren't actually trying to convince you of any specific argument, they are demonstrating how to switch your brain off by doing the Huh Emoji (google it) at a bag of price-fixed bread the moment someone says "things could be better than this", and that you are not in fact being a credulous and heinously malicious dipshit by doing so
I think it came up in The Gruen Transfer (tv show, yes I'm ancient) that in politics you're allowed to just show the other guy's product and say 'THIS IS POISON AND IT WILL KILL YOU' in a way that you just can't with advertisements for regular goods and services. Of course, when the politics are explicitly about economics then that already false distinction breaks down pretty obviously Edit: I was at the Centrist Rally yesterday. Dozens of people chanting 'a world that is not rapidly getting worse is not possible'. So inspirational, I'm filled with hope for our well-managed exponentially accelerating decline

I can hear Mayor Pete skittering around in the background
lol yeah, I actually came here to say the monopolist/cartel nature of Canadian grocers is so widespread we can even connect it very directly to US politics because that's some of the shit Mayo Pete was getting up to with McKinsey, in fixing bread prices.
I also the "NDP has an antisemitism problem" article go past and my reactions seeing it was about Israel shit was "oh go FUCK yourself" and then "wow this guy sounds based as hell"
Me listening to Riley reading the new NDP policy programme is basically the Vince McMahon reaction meme
Hello, grocery soldier here. We do in fact have a person who's whole job is walking about the store and looking at tags, replacing them, etc.
As children in late 1960s Saskatchewan, we still saw two-dollar Canadian bills with the corners torn off; a legacy from Alberta of the 1930s, when 'Bible Bill' declared them "the Devil's currency".
Did the devil live in the corners
also shout out to the whole Québec independence movement that literally only became about woman wearing the hidjab. CAQ and PQ now have a Supreme Leader of Iran-level obsession about women wearing the hidjab but it's in the opposite direction
going to the supreme court test the structural integrity of the confederation because Woman Wears Hidjab is a crazy ass moment in commonwealth politics on par with the UK tories shooting a nuclear missile into the architecture of devolution because Trans People
also shout out to the whole Singh-era NDP who tried to go big by embracing Diet Woke and it just ran the party into the ground completely
really appreciate all the Conservative to Liberal defectors who are completely giving up the game. I, too, agree that the Liberals are better at implementing Tory politics than the Tories are I just don't think it's a *good* thing
wow a new "Corbyn/Sanders moment"? I wonder how that'll end
Trying to decide from this episode and no awareness of Canada’s general cost of living whether there’s genuinely meaningful change being proposed from the left (compared to Australia) because: A. Canadian politicians are more meaningfully leftwing than our Greens because of cultural differences in the political sphere or B. it’s just Going A Lot Worse Over There and that’s motivating greater propositions for change
I was also cursing my ignorance of Canadian cost of living etc because it really sounds like Australia and Canada are twins in many respects and if Canada really has solutions, could we steal them?
As a produce manager for loblaws I would love to run a government owned store and lend any expertise I have to making sure it succeeds. Fuck this shitty company, fuck the food professor, fuck galen weston.
Ditto as a loblaw night crew guy (writing this between stocking shelves lol)

It does make me feel a little insane how it feels like your average person seems to think Carney's a relatively social progressive moderate when in fact if you look at anything he says or does he is a sneering imperialist/colonialist dead eyed finance psycho. I mean for example feeding into anti-immigrant narratives and cutting international student and foreign worker numbers as a market based way to lower rent costs rather than investing in public housing. Will thousands upon thousands of staff layoffs at colleges and universities have any negative knock on consequences? It's probably fine! The rent is down somewhat (please ignore that homelessness is still skyrocketing). We did it!
That's the Liberal label at work. For some reason Liberal voters think they stand for the moderate fantasy - a progressive status quo.

As a Canadian, it's nice to see some home town horrors and hope, if just to mix it up a bit. Looking forward to next episode when something incomprehensibly British will be brought up so my inability to understand will soften the psychic damage a little.
In Project Hail Mary an 1870s technology Jules Verne-ass species jury-rigs their first ever spacecraft which has absolutely no right to work to make an interstellar voyage to see if there's any way that they can keep their star from dying and then everyone on it dies except the stoker (the guy who shovels coal into the engine) because they don't even know what radiation is Incredible things have been possible for a very long time. 'The supermarket but it's not as expensive' is so far from being pie-in-the-sky fantasy that I flatly refuse to believe that the people who are claiming it is impossible actually in their heart of hearts believe it
Supply teacher wheeling in the TV and hitting play on "Oh, Canada" our favorite rainy day program.
From Marx Carney to Mark KKKarney. You hate to see it.
Lmao found Nova's alt. Just can't keep away from withering posts can you babe! Enjoy the holibobs
Seeing supermarkets as a form of lost technology that we can't replicate anymore is so cooked. I hate that "it's difficult so we can't do it" shit. I really miss the space age idea of "of course this thing is difficult. You're the*government.* Figure it out. It's also: an absolutely ludicrous thing to say as a reactionary, because chances are you're going to support AI data center buildout, which is an extremely complicated task.
The point about the Corbyn-style delegitimization only working from a system that has legitimacy is really good too. You can't regularly shit yourself in public and then call others out for being "unreasonable and embarrassing". Unless that person's the President of the US, I guess.
It would be so funny if Alberta becomes independent but Quebec stays
They had to strategically disable Nova’s internet, they know she’s a load-bearing podcaster. Also, does this episode count as CanCon?
It also doesnt help when my premier, Don Ford, is actively just cutting up and selling my province for parts to the mob
Alberta talk and no November? heresy
also amazing how easy you can get people to straight up jork it to the idea of 21st century canadian de gaulle by going "murmur murmur international system maybe not great???? not gonna do anything bout it tho" at an international meeting
Perhaps my favourite story about de Gaulle is being told that he wasn't welcome at the 1943 Tehran conference on grand strategy between the Chinese (Chiang), British (Churchill), and Americans (FDR). Because, and he was told very bluntly, Chiang had lost three France's worth of territory and manpower to enemy occupation but he was still worth three de Gaulles His mistress eventually got him to stop crying and come out of his bedroom
it's fun when you get a little teaser of the incomprehensible bit of the week in the title
It warms my heart to think about people in the UK and around the world all laughing at the food professor. Imagine the cartoonish frown he would make if he knew.
We gotta laugh because otherwise we have to contend with the idea of Julie bindel going to the Netherlands and harassing the staff about what would happen if trans man used the public showers.
Milo still trapped behind the Strait of Hormuz
At least 'the straight of Hormuz' isn't trapped in his behind, am I right lads (the podcast just isn't the same without him, but I'm glad he's doing well)
Nate should change his band's name to "The Mark Carney Project"
