Lord Item feat. Gareth Dennis

Gareth joins us to discuss new developments in UK transit, specifically outside of London, that look... promising? And not terrible? But we also have to check in with other old friends: the ones who're still scamming, the ones who've been pardoned by Trump and now plan to reinvent the airplane bathroom, and the ones who've been made earls in Scotland for some reason.

If you want to hear more from Gareth, check out Rail Natter here!

The best thing to happen to German transportation is that you can just buy one monthly ticket for 50 euro and use pretty much all regional transportation in the entirety of Germany with it, that improved my and so many other people’s life by a lot

Dario Item heard about Scotland's innovations in pizza and had to get his feet under the table

I feel like I had the revolutionary toilet experience doing the cross hemispheric hop on a Lufthansa A340-6xx, they'd built a full size stall style toilet bay in the midsection cargo area with a neat saloon door style entrance with a dedicated washing sink outside and a huge amount of walking room to stretch out. Compared to every other economy class experience it was amazing to be able to walk in an uncramped space on a 14 hour flight and do cat things. It's simultaneously meant the seating area was a lot quieter of the chatter that comes with folkx wandering in and out of the stalls on traditional airline toilets. Like the engineers really thought through the experience holistically. I'd be interested if they did any research into DVT and other airline travel related health outcomes on passengers with access to those types of toilet facilities. It's a big deal given the volume of traffic and how expensive financialising health care means it'll be the realistic way to bring down costs in round about ways whilst improving volume customer experience outcomes.

I misheard “secretariat” as “secretary” and got very confused by the movie reference.

After consolidating it under his control, premier podcast monopolist and new owner of Trashfuture Gareth will henceforward be paying all employees in Company Scrip which is only exchangeable for TEU standardised container units of Blahaj plushies and tickets to the Brisbane show of Milo on tour specifically

Well there’s your Gareth. Also, I feel like he’d be a great guest on NGNM, he’s basically the mayor of trains.

G
Gareth Dennis · March 23, 2026

I've got thoughts on the mayor to do as well...

Why does Nate think everything is related to The Death of Stalin in some way. Also bring back Milo

W
Wawawawa · March 23, 2026

Because it's so British. In retrospect I believe it's the most British movie ever made.

Asking honestly : where is Milo? Is he on tour? Vacation? Has he left the regular TF cast? Has he been vanished to a more equitable podcast in the lagoon?

A
Andrew Davis · March 21, 2026

According to Milo Edwards dot co dot UK he's still on tour. Watching his weekly YouTube program Glue Factory is kind of like methadone.

R

Ripley *also* knows which podcast Gareth's been listening to recently, and all I say to that is: we can't know.

Unfortunately local transport is still beholden to treasury brain. Dan Jarvis as Sheffield City Region mayor outright offered to use local taxation to fund the electrification of the Midland Mainline as far as Sheffield to fix Sheffield station being the most polluted part of the city and got outright ignored because central government didn't care enough.

I’d genuinely forgotten Anguilla was a place and just thought wait, he’s the ambassador to eels?

The Manchester Bee system was such an eye opener for what bus based transit even could, brace yourselves, be. I used to joke about bus systems: Convenient, reliable, and comfortable. Pick two and flip 3 coins. If any of them are tails, you get the one you didn't pick. (it was funnier as a Magic the Gathering card). But the Bee was a game changer

Scene; a coal miner, sitting at the dinner table, listening to a podcast, looks up at his wife who's making tea. He has a Yorkshire accent for reasons; "well, love, Death Of Stalin catching strays on TF again"

R

11:00 Point of fact, Dario Item is ambassador for Antigua and Barbuda. Anguilla is a different place. Hopefully they correct this later in the episode.

Disgraceful stuff, really. I thought we cared about facts around here.
