Black Bag Diplomacy feat. Jana Silverman
Professor of International Relations at UFABC Brazil and DSA International Co-Chair Dr. Jana Silverman joins us to discuss, based on history, what we can now about the recent American crimes and outrages in Venezuela. Also, this raises some questions as to the legitimacy of the FIFA Peace Prize.

Re-Listening to this 3 months down the road: lmao Also Nova’s audio is giving some high-frequency noise.
Failed color revolution, No shit Ukraine hasn't had an election, they are kinda in a war of survival against an imperialist invader who has shown no qualms with blowing up large groups of civilians. Comedy podcast sure sure. That y'all didn't push back or just cut out those asinine statements has me reconsidering if it's ethical giving you money
CHARLIE DONT SURF
really excited for Iraq 2.0. The Iraqining. That's all I've got I'm tired fam. Since 2019 I've had US healthcare system completely collapses and US "liberates" Venezuela happening by 2030. So everything is preceding on track.
Nova: "You work in Houston in a glass walled office, being A/C'd to death." I've never felt more seen.
"When was the last time ukrain had an election" is a take that the whole podcast should be really ashamed for not cutting out. Interesting episode but id love for western leftist to at least once not attack a country facing an fascist empire
you're listening to the podcast about things being bad buddy better prepare yourself to hear about ukraine having problems too
Trump voice this is Delta Juliet Tango, great name, Juliet, I knew a Juliet once, nice girl, huge rack, anyway I wanna see that big bomb, the biggest bomb anyone's ever seen, drop it right here so we can all see it,
Highly recommend the book Gangster of Capitalism for more about US intervention and the growth of their empire.
Great guest. Do you think they're after Greenland to turn it into Data Center Island?
Maybe, but that's not the point. The want for Greenland has three main motivations: 1, natural resources. As climate change melts them glaciers, there's likely to be trillions in mineral wealth inside the island. 2, Geographical domination. Another thing that melting ice caps theoretically do will completely ease artic travel. The US however, want to control that too, and posture closer the Russia ans China as a bonus. 3, BIG. Greenland is the world's largest island. Owning it is bragging rights. Trump loves that kind of ego inflation.
*Canadian Bacon mentioned*
Knower more about
the problem with rationalizing as "how would YOU feel if the US came and took away *your* head of state" is that like 97% of people I know and talk to would be like at *worse* like "eh-"
Yeah I was ranting about this the other day where everyone in Venezuela celebrating rn about what a great favor the US has done them is gonna get the world's biggest fell for it again award in like, however many months it's gonna take for those dipshits to crater the Venezuelan economy (even more). It's just Iraq again.
You‘re right, Trump should live out his term in a Salazar kind of situation, if he has to stay in power.
Someone show donald trump a Tiger II and he’ll order Lima to make a million of them
You know who deserves to be appointed “Transitional President” of Venezuela? Hillary Clinton! Yes, Venezuela deserves better, but Hillary deserves her own bathetic Maximiliana!
I'm really looking forward too Trump listing his historic grievances against the Danes and realising that he's talking about The Great Heathen Army.
Norway might be a better option for Trump to invade next, considering they’re one of Venezuela’s fellow petrostates… The Norwegian TV show _Occupied_ is about Norway getting invaded as a rebellious petrostate: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Occupied (The weird thing is that the show is about *Russia* doing a “peacekeeping operation”—with EU support—to overthrow an anti-petroleum Norwegian government… and they’re getting overthrown because they’re… greens.)
what is fun though about the usual "oh no you can't attack states that are opposed to the empire you live in for their crimes" (yes i can just watch me, internationalism bitch) is that it's literally the thing russian and chinese dissidents often do and get quite rightly pilloried for (Pussy Riot hanging out with Hillary Clinton comes to mind)
Leftist opposition to international interventionism is more pragmatic than idealist, though. Sovereign interventionism is bad under a lot of circumstances because *it doesn’t work*… as evidenced by the fact that has almost universally failed in the long run. The only way to justify leftist international military intervention is to abolish the state and engage in Permanent Revolution. Or, actually, maybe Brezhnev was *right* when he dismissed non-interventionism, which we all know because of the fact that Brezhnev defeated Capitalism once and for all, and we all now live in a global Communist utopia, history having ended in the 1930s with Stalin, the Last Man.
I left the DSA in 2022 after there awful statements about Ukraine. After almost 4 years of war i see nothing has changed.
it's the guy from the comic popping his head out the well like "you claim to be a liberal state, yet you impose exceptional measures during a brutal war of conquest like literally any liberal state would do in that situation? curious!"
Excited to hear the pod bumble through an international relations topic yet again.
For my education, who would you say has a better analysis on this situation?
For me I think that the dismantling of USAID, the ramping up of immigration enforcement, the partnering with Bukele's super prison, JD Vance calling Europe a failed state, and the overthrow of Maduro (among other things) is really solidifying a picture of the US sending the message to the world to "stay in your country and die"
Well, unless you want a free vacation to see Broadway. Then by all means become a head of state and openly oppose the United States. I really think more world leaders should be invested in what’s new on Broadway! Do you think Maduro has an opinion about Jane Krakowsky replacing Cole Escola in _Oh, Mary!_? Yes! Yes he does! That’s why Maduro had the personal fortitude to resist the United States! If you can make it here [in New York] you can make it anywhere!
Thanks for including the “moderating influence” Rex Tillerson mention.
Danish Taliban is a funny concept.

[Vangelis synth blares] My god, my god, where is my son? My missing son! Mi hijo desaparecido!
Lmao. VDV could never
When was the last time we had elections in Ukraine? Pretty pathetic way to end, especially after stating that you can't really judge regime but have to be anti-interventionist. When was the last week there weren't country wide terror strikes in Ukraine?
What is still driving me mental is that Trump seems to have really believed this was all it would take for for the US to run Venezuela. Like he really thought this shit worked like checkers, get behind the lines now you have a king there
Isn't this how most American imperialist action works like?
Hooting like a goose the instant I hear Nate
Dr Silverman misspoke at about the 14 minute mark. She's referring to the Spanish-American War, not the Spanish Civil War.
I know in my bones that either Trump or The Drunk put on the Chuck Norris movie Delta Force 2 during their sleep over at Mar A Lago planning this shit.
Wait, someone else played mercenaries 2?

Sir Keir's denial that he was in any way associated with a decisive action speaks to how deep he is in his own mind-palace
Riley who you playing in CK3?
Maduro is a joke? Theres just no respect for what it means to live and resist american full spectrum domination. Im sorry hes not a west demsoc. I would if there any forces in Venezuela that prevent that. If only he'd been more like Allende, he could have got shot ten years ago!
Possibly November's L-est take and a painful reminder that this is still a British politics podcast
"when was the last time we had elections in Ukraine?" good thing nothing happened since the last election in 2019 that might make it difficult/impossible to hold another so we can pose hilarious rhetoricals like that
Maybe it’s impossible (I don’t know) but it’s not unheard of to have elections in the middle of a war. The US had elections in 1862 and 1864 during the civil war. I’m a dumb American so no clue if there are other more recent examples in countries we weren’t actively occupying
If you're not ready to get black bagged and dragged across the hemisphere, you're not ready for Genghis Khan in CK3.
Probably more comfortable than your average Ryanair flight!
Aw man am I gonna have to read baudrillard to understand this episode
This sucks man I still need to finish reading Debord
Ah, at last. My opinion has arrived.
Can't believe the FIFA peace prize has been dishonoured like this
