Too Uncool for Unschool ft. Ed Campbell
It's the free one!
Ed Campbell has ventured deep into the dark heart of British Bitcoin enthusiasm to bring us dispatches from the front lines of the battle against the state… and also a cryptocurrency themed marmalade that we all agree was slightly too sour.

Flat earth society clowns are the same. They arent here to explain everything to you (when you confront their bullshit with science). You just haven't read enough flat earth nonsense.
this episode has inspired me to begin my Bitcoin deconstruction journey
I think you guys are forgetting the football heritage of east London's Real Walford, under the great manager Alfie Moon
“American Protestantism can’t make good art” uhhhh Creed “my sacrifice” would like a word
Does anyone recall which episode they did the gay names for consulting firms? Need to compile it and send to a friend/my office
Have Milo and November had a falling out? Can't remember the last time they were on a show together
as a football fan i am 100% with ed on the hooliganism thing — tf firm!
If you want to use Bitcoin as actual currency, crank libertarian Roger Ver actually created a fork, Bitcoin Cash, that reduces transaction fees and increases transaction throughput by increasing the block size. The problem with Bitcoin Cash is that it is less conducive to deflation, and people who run Bitcoin hash nodes want high Bitcoin prices because they *want* Bitcoin to be a Ponzi scheme. The fact that high Bitcoin prices are necessary in order to allow mining pools to cover their overhead costs (equipment depreciation and electricity) just reinforces this. So while, yes, the floor Bitcoin price will always be somewhere around the actual cost of mining those Bitcoin, there is also an incentive for the price to be pushed much higher, with greater volatility. In other words, the problem with a deflationary asset is that people hoard it rather than spending it, and Bitcoin maximalists prefer hoarding to actually having a usable currency. The weird thing, incidentally, is that despite having more long-term stability, Bitcoin Cash actually has more short-term volatility, so while you might actually be able to use Bitcoin Cash for transactions, you probably wouldn’t want to sit on large amounts of it for any extended period of time. For reference, I just checked, and the current BTC transaction fee is around 0.90 USD, though it was around 6 USD a year ago, whereas the current BCH transaction fee is around 0.01 USD, though at several points last year it briefly spiked to as high as 0.10 USD. Anyway, which of these would you prefer as the transaction fee on, say, buying a $2 cup of coffee? $6 for buying it with BTC or 10¢ for buying it with BCH? The short-term volatility of BCH does still create a problem inasmuch as using it exclusively as a medium of exchange means each transaction would actually be a minimum of three transactions—USD to BCH; the actual purchase; then BCH back to USD—so you might be paying as much as 30¢ (3x 10¢) as a transaction fee, though that transaction fee is irrespective of transaction size, unlike, say, a credit card swipe.
its weird that a closed community on an island would be so ridiculously libertarian. usually these places are quite socialist because everybody kind of has to rely on each other
I can think of at least one famous island that had very libertarian views
I don't like how close the Bitcoin ideology people are, in ways, similar to evangelical white supremacists
'Arise Sir Nigel' lmao
I got a little cautious about the Crypto Art that featured an Octopus in control of Money because that sure sounded to me like it could've been a Huge Antisemitic Dogwhistle, unless I was reading too much into it...
I know it's December, but where has November gone?
Kinda shocked Bedford Harkonnen wasn't said
Milo's reaction to Medea was me reading Lord of the Flies in seventh grade. "So you see, it shows how without civilization all men behave like savages." And I'm like, no, if I was on that island I wouldn't do any of that shit. I would just be hanging out.
They made us read Lord of the Flies in 4th grade in catholic school and it scared the shit out of me and gave me nightmares for months lol. If I'd had half your confidence, I would've organized against them sending us door-to-door twice a year to sell raffle tickets and chocolate bars for the parish
the thing that those Bitcoiners don't understand is that we live in a society
But what if the *real* society is the friends we made along the way? 🤓
Milo—“no it doesn’t, it’s made up” literally me trying to convince any of my cinema scaredy cat besties to watch horror w me
“my stupid monkey brain doesn’t care tho”
Francophobic Raw Milk Geezer is my new best friend
This is how we get Jacques Gonsoulin on the pod.
I think part of the incoherence of bitcoin individualism, and tech libertarianism more broadly is that it's a really wrong answer to the question of what do we replace the state with if it's no longer working for most people? The Amish answer is famously not individualist, and the peasant answer whether that's individualist or communal is explicitly accepting reduced technical and political complexity because you don't need either of those things to feed people when the state won't. (The US gov recently decided to turn off food stamps). But Bitcoin/tech libertarianism is so captured by the ghost of neoliberalism or whatever that it has to be individualistic but also requires a political entity with the resources of a small continent just to make the semiconductors for it's own existence.
Coffezilla just posted fantastic YouTube video on a scammer getting caught doing this. Took $15000 via bitcoin from a quadriplegic woman on ssi. The family only found out after she died cuz he was still texting her pretending to be a “hallmark channel actor” the way they catch the scammer is very cathartic
ED, FORTUNATELY YOU ARE INCORRECT. Real Bedford failed in their attempt to merge with Bedford Town and the people from the club seem to hate Peter having met him, so fingers crossed his assault on semi pro football continues to hit more stumbling blocks
Oh hey it’s the Auralnauts’ cover of You Spin Me Round! Which I believe is meant to be a bit of a tongue-in-cheek dark movie trailer version, so Ed was spot on.

"Libertarians are like house cats, they’re convinced of their fierce independence while dependent on a system they don’t appreciate or understand.”
And, just like housecats, Libertarians can, in fact, survive feral; they just live for a fraction as long, and they’re a lot less happy. Maybe we can do TNR on Libertarians, then?
I feel like if a libertarian tells you they're "unschooling the octopus" it's actually admitting to some kind of sex crime
But if a Libertarian tells you they’re really into murders, they’re probably just corvid fanciers.
Shout out to my (then) 80yo boss who, in 2021, tried to convince me to buy into bitcoin while I was typing up an email (which he called letter) to the finance court where he tried to get a client off a 500.000€ tax payment for his bitcoin fortune, arguing that it shouldn't count as income because it is not defined as such in german tax law. What a guy. Didn't know what a zip file was.
I think the reason Bitcoin should be considered a metallic commodity is that just like lead as it accumulates in your body it progressively drives you insane. It’s a pity Bitcoin can’t be melted down and used to make electronics, though. (All solder is Bitcoin-free solder.)
On that Rotherham trailer, people just can't cope with the statistical reality that kids are way more likely to be sexually abused and trafficked by a relative or friend of the family. The racism is like an extra treat.
My sister's mum chose to believe she had married someone who wouldn't molest his teenage stepdaughter Of course, the side of the family (thankfully a minority) which sided with him and her over my sister when they declared her insane and completely tanked her social life and ruined her schooling now has really strong opinions about how worried they are about our side abusing our kids. They're all very white and very straight, so in their minds a lot of alarm bells for that are ringing Of course, they trust my sister's stepfather with their (all white) kids. He's so *attentive*, especially to the girls. He's already detected potential mental health issues like those my sister had, especially the girls entering their teens
I'm quite fond of a lemony marmalade... Maybe I should invest in crypto.
Why not corner the market on lemons? It’s not like they’re perishable or anything… (Well, lemon marmalade, that is. “Fruit preserves” exist for the purpose of, well, preserving fruit.)
There was me hoping We're All Far Right Now would be a play on the C86-indie-darlings McCarthy song We're All Bourgeois Now
Sheffield United mentioned. Up the fucking blades
My friends, we are still in the Covid-19 pandemic! It never ended. Please stop promoting this false narrative!
Still wearing CBRN, very glad to hear someone else who isn't directly under my discipline is taking it seriously.
