2024 Trashfuture Q&A, Part 2

The Q&A continues! And we'll have a regular bonus episode out this week as well.

You asked us questions and we answered. Hussein is out on parental leave, but we convened the rest of the cast (Riley, Milo, Nate, and November) to respond as best as possible. However, it went so long that we decided to make it into two episodes. Thanks so much for being a TF patron!

Do the show on a boat in the river between Detroit and Windsor so it's in international waters or some shit. Like a casino boat on the Mississippi

Excuse me, Riley, I was a picky eater because I grew up in Australia, and even compared to the meagre Aussie Anglo restaurants & cuisines of the 80s, my parents were absolutely sub-par cooks. Total shite. So many rubbery steaks and lamb so overcooked it's like eating hay. What else is a child with taste to do, I ask you, fancyboi.

this is improbable but an Iowa City show would be a banger, we love weird humor, collectivism, being trans, and hating one specific landlord. Also the city is 50% bars and everyone you meet will have an extremely strong opinion on which ones are good, which can be amusing

November confirms what we've all always known. Podcasting, and listening to podcasts, is harm reduction

In Riley’s defence, those card readers are very easy to break because they’re stuffed full of anti-tamper measures that will kick off if you so much as breathe on them funny. I used to work for a company that made Point-of-Sale systems and there was a huge box in the back of the lock-up filled with broken card readers

Ironically Seattle is probably most suited to a TF live show, with the whole Seattle Freeze thing (it's a real thing!). It lines up with British humor a bit >too< well.

On the Labour ‘19 loss question - I think Johnson’s “levelling up” promise was the first time Tories had campaigned against austerity, and so the election wasn’t about austerity and cuts, and therefore it was about Brexit. May tried to make the ‘17 election about Brexit but thought that meant she could expand cuts, and people cared more about cuts and didn’t coalesce around her. Boris did the opposite and enough voters did coalesce around him because of it.

NGL, never got the appeal of Social Media. Only ever use it to keep tabs on bands/acts that I follow, so in that respect I'm not mourning the slow death of Twitter.

V
Vanessa P · January 3, 2025

Speaking as someone who has never used it or its clones, Twitter was particularly awful for the world, I think, because of the combination of its appeal to elites and its incredibly eerie ability to manufacture a feeling of ersatz, insular 'community', which seems to turn a lot of people into complete freaks. It created this whole class of media and political people who were totally trapped in this bizarre mirror world where every utterance on an ultimately quite unpopular website matters, so when @pissempress2381 posts pig poop balls dot jpeg at Alastair Campbell it's somehow a 'threat to democracy', or when a celebrity posts an epic own of Donald Trump it's SURELY the end of the bad orange man. I find it incredibly surreal in a way that is really difficult to articulate to people who are that online? And now we live with the consequences; a Redditor runs the US government, and the NHS bows only to the insane whims of a certain mediocre castle-dwelling author. It's grim!
