Smoke Em If You Got Em

Riley, Nova, Milo, and Nate talk about the new civil rights struggle of our time: the plan to ban smoking in pub gardens. Then, a broader discussion of the miserablism of a PM whose approval rating is already at 23% only a couple short months into his government. Finally, we discuss an excellent article on the type of guy who becomes a middle manager in a private security guard company. It’s by Jasper Craven and is linked here: https://harpers.org/archive/2024/09/the-thin-purple-line-jasper-craven-private-security-guard/

So I used to be a private security guard in America. It radicalized me, both because i didn't realize that the majority of what i'd be doing would be keeping homeless people from stealing things they clearly needed (food, tents, etc) but also because at least once or twice a week i went into situations where i didn't know if the person i was going to be speaking to (aggressive, stalking an employee, in a mental health crisis, o) had a weapon or whether they might want to attack. And for the reasons you listed we couldn't have weapons or do anything wild. So you know what we were trained/learned to do? deescalate shit. The police have NO excuse.

I worked as a security guard for like 4 years. It was a stupid easy job, I just collected a paycheck while playing on my phone. Allied Universal fucking sucks tho, they will fuck you over at every opportunity

My sibling is deeply schizophrenic and has a trust set up by one of our parents before they died. Aside from me, they were the only person deeply suspicious of their trustee who eventually ended up getting arrested for comically large wire fraud. So yes, November is right, many people living with schizophrenia assuredly were not duped by Skint Keith Starmer.

Not accusing anyone of prejudice or ableism, but people living with schizophrenia aren't as stupid or inept as commonly held prejudice would have you believe. If anything it's impressive what they can do when believing they're under mind control.

The thing that gets me about all the austerity is we're not even saving up for anything! We're not skipping takeaways to afford a house (lol), we're skipping medical care and then we still won't have enough money to afford a house so fuck you

Forgive my ignorance, but what is the chant that Nate says at 55:26? It is clearly a reference to something, from context I'd imagine this is a chant from some famous cult?

In the 1980s TV series Fist of the North Star, the hero Kenshiro will do his signature move of hitting a villain a thousand times really fast, which will cause them to literally explode, but on a time release. So, inevitably they'll say "ah you think your puny fists can defeat me?" and Kenshiro will always respond with "Omae wa mou shin deiru," which means "You're already dead." They almost always respond with "WHAT???" and then their heads / bodies / extremities explode.

I can't wait for the conservatives in the US to declare all cops woke and pass legislation allowing for privatized non-unionized police forces

I’ve kicked 6 allied security employees off the bus I drive in the last 3 months for trying to start fights with homeless people. Every one of them minding their own business looking for a place to sleep for 90 minutes. They’ve all been baffled when they get the boot.

Indeed! When I (American) was living in the Smoke in the 80s, it looked like the UK was about 50 years ahead of the States. Suez was '59, but the US was decades away from its collective nervous breakdown over the collapse of its empire. Brits are catching up!

The fact that many Remainers' who hated Jeremy Corbyn's Brexit policies backed Keir Stramer (Corbyn's Shadow Secretary for Exiting the European Union from 2016 -2020) speaks volumes about their intelligence and/or honesty.
