*PATRON UNLOCK* Britainology 88: Euro '96 feat. Juliet Jacques

For this month's second Britainology, we discuss the mythological summer that English football wasn't total shit, which was something of a new phenomenon at the time. That's right, we're discussing the 1996 UEFA European Football Championship, hosted in the UK in the dying lights of John Major's premiership—and why it's become something of an elder Millennial nostalgia sump. Joining us is friend of the show and actual-football-knower Juliet Jacques. It's a lot of fun!

Woah woah woah. Guys. C'mon. Yes Ireland had a few players born in England, of Irish parents. Calling them "all born in England" is pretty insulting and lazy tbh. Also quite ironic when 2 seconds later you mention John Barnes.

the general shudder of disappointment with Crawley makes it funnier that the founding members of the Cure were from there

Lads have you considered doing a britainology episode on "A very British coup"? If you've not watched it, extremely cheesy BBC 3 part miniseries which dares to ask "What if Jeremy Corbyn won but he was from Sheffield and also the soviet union never fell for some reason?" It's a really good bit of extremely concentrated britishness that'd make for a fantastic episode. The whole thing's on youtube. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ACg6IuFfMJE&t=413s

I'm pretty sure it started off as a book before being made into a TV show

Indianapolis' USL team is Indy Eleven, though it's possible that MLS will expand into Indianapolis and it sounds like Indy Eleven wouldn't be involved in that expansion, so who knows what the MLS team would end up named.

Saw the name and thought "isn't that who Keir Starmer did cocaine with?" (Loud incorrect buzzer)
