The Sulla of Suburbia feat. Patrick Wyman

It's the free one!

Patrick Wyman rejoins the gang to discuss further historical parallels - this time, we’re looking at the history of calls for an “American Caesar” to sweep away the decrepit institutions of the late Republican period… but even a cursory scratch beneath the surface reveals that there’s less to be understood about this movement from its ostensible associations with the troubles of Ancient Rome, and more to be understood by its parallels with ANOTHER modern right wing political movement that likened itself to Ancient Rome. Oh you know the one we mean.

In my experience the people Dr. Wyman labels gentry generally dislike their children and believe their wealth will insulate them from their own shortcomings. (I suppose you would need to think this if you were a climate change denier, which they almost always are.) The generally overpaid people in the suburbs are the ones who are constantly anxious about their Mendoza line kids. ETA: Should have kept listening. 😅

So what should we (your audience) Do About Peter Thiel?

Sorry to inform everyone that the ostensible liberals in California are probably about to breach an important line when they start rounding homeless people up and putting them in camps in the desert. When “dealing with inconvenient people” becomes a key aim of government, we’re probably not heading anywhere good.

Can confirm, Yakima is the Albania of the Pacific Northwest. No bunkers, but there are a ton of decommissioned Cold War silos all over eastern WA. You see their big concrete doors open and a massive empty hole where the rocket used to be.

This is the American version of my in-laws telling me about the unmarked and abandoned tin mines where they grew up in Cornwall.

Can I just say that while it is correct to hammer the vance is a weirdo point it is rich to call any political ideology esoteric when you are in the room with Riley and November, two of nature's perfect freaks

Can you guys just hire Patrick already?

I wrote my doctoral dissertation on the Peter Thiel-Curtis Yarvin ideology and its use of existing fascist and white nationalist ideology. Not sure if anyone wants to know more about it but there is a several hundred pages sitting online if you search for it: "The Kids are Alt-Right"

If it helps I would like to kill your suburban Portland family

Patrick undersold the reactionary right wingers that live in suburban Portland. The lead up to the last election was fucking wild, and most of the agitators came from the towns around Vancouver, WA. Not to mention Portland Police Bureau has overly cozy relationship with violent far right groups

As probably the only listener entirely too familiar with Yakima, this is an incredibly regionally specific burn on Albania.

I can't imagine what it would be like if your entire country was as dire as yakima edit: if yakima is albania what does that make ellensburg
