Blood Boy Jail Island

For this week's bonus, it's Riley, Milo, Hussein, and November discussing the recent news about ICC arrest warrants (and US/UK politicians statements about wanting to bomb the Netherlands as a result), but we're also discussing a very strange UK business claiming it's going to build a sort of British Neom in a Napoleonic-era fortress in Dover. That was also a borstal and a refugee deportation centre. You can't deny it's on-brand for this sceptered isle.

EDINBURGH LIVE SHOW ALERT: We're going to be live at Monkey Barrel comedy at the Edinburgh Fringe on August 14, and you can get tickets here: https://www.wegottickets.com/event/621432

The comparison to a Bond villain lair isn't bad, but I think there's an even closer match. Fine hotels and art shows, techbro offices with a "longevity research clinic," (possibly hosting a war criminal wanted for genocide) all inside a converted Napoleonic fortress / prison? This is a Hitman level

"The Tories are trying to claim they did it by some magic" - Wish that was the actual claim, like they claim they performed a secret ritual, and if you vote for them the ritual will continue.

Currently working in a university building that is over 70 years old and way past on its last legs. In the last year we’ve had at least one major flood and had all our drinking water reclassified as not safe for drinking, plus numerous bits of crumbling ceilings, cold rooms no longer working, and equipment failures due to lack of surge protection when a local electrical fire upset the grid. Essentially we need a new building but uni management have explicitly told senior staff that we can’t have one because we don’t blatantly exploit enough international students. Great culture and fantastic research but very much despite the building and uni management.

The Tech Fort sounds so much like an Adeptus Mechanicus thing it's insane

Undeveloped seaside town is a wild British concept for someone who was mostly raised in California. (Not all of the beaches are claimed by 7+ figure homes yet, but there's nothing like Blackpool, Dover, Thanet, et cetera.) Suppose that happens when all your hinterland isn't actually that far from a beach.

Just sounds like they're trying to build British Tokyo-3.

Well because lots of Muslim countries don’t recognize Israel Bennie’s travel options are even smaller. He can’t travel to Indonesia with an Israeli passport for example (and I highly doubt Iran is letting him in)

What would the American equivalent be? Some misterious entrepreneur purchasing a National Guard Armory with a history of repression, maybe leasing some space to film movies?

I am once again asking for a Britainology, or a series of Britainologies, about education in Britain (an Oxbridge ep, an all the regular universities ep, a primary/secondary ed ep, an ep on the "center of excellence in tricking Chinese students" bit, etc)

I would say the main thing that makes Australia a bit more tolerable than the UK is that the government is still willing to spend money. The Tories will cut the “woke” stuff, but they will still commit to infrastructure projects (bad ones usually), and the Labor party builds some good infrastructure projects but takes way too long to do it and doesn’t care about unemployment assistance anymore.

"I want you to keep all of that in your head" is the most polite-Riley way of saying "shut-up children".

As a former university professor, I just wanna flag that it's not only the bloated layers of upper management who'd prefer a student-less university; many (if not most) teaching staff share that opinion.

Superb film, the scene in the restaurant when it's revealed that Don is coming blew me away, I think its some of the best acting I've ever seen. As someone who works in the university sector in Australia, I can say with certainty that we've become the University Planet of Asia. International student uni fees here cost more than the UK now (for obvious underfunding reasons) but at least there's sunshine & good food. Fucken sucks that the current Labor gov is smashing the racism button so hard, though.
