The Mesoamerican Bill Simmons Podcast ft. Patrick Wyman

Recurring guest and firm favourite Patrick Wyman joins the gang to discuss the history of climate change - what adaptation has looked like for different societies that formed and deformed around changing climates. Including pre-Dynastic Egypt, the Indus Valley Civilisation, and the crises that plagued the ends of Rome and Feudalism, among others! But first, twenty minutes grousing about how strong fundamentals players with good coachability have become a rare thing in the Mesoamerican Ritual Ball Game.

the cool thing about cattle ruining previously fertile land is that it’s an entirely preventable problem, you just have to use rotational cropping and it has been shown to reverse desertification on all continents except Antarctica. The problem is that getting farmers to do rotational cropping is really difficult because farmers are ridiculously conservative.

I can't believe Ball Game started in Sip this year. How the hell are they supposed to play in the colder parts of the empire in stadiums without domes?

My girlfriend used to be an amateur bodybuilder, which is why we have several Arnold books on the shelf such as "The new encyclopedia of modern bodybuilding", but we (or me) are missing "Pump and Circumstance". Great shout November.

By saying Tides is his favorite show, Riley has clearly signaled who his preferred nephew is among the TF gang.

This has got to be the latest into an episode I've had a "Hussein's on this episode?" I assume he's just arriving in the studio at the last minute because I don't think anyone could make it through the ballgame bits stone silent.

What if instead of early modern Spaniards who hadn’t even learned football yet, it had been Sassanid polo players showing up at the Mayan ball game 1500 years ago?

On the other hand—no pun intended—would the Aztecs have been impressed by jeu de paume?
