End Times Fascism feat. Naomi Klein and Astra Taylor (E389)

Naomi Klein and Astra Taylor join us to discuss their new book, End Times Fascism: And the Fight for the Living World. They explain how tech billionaires, Christian end-timers, and ethno-nationalists have converged around a politics of permanent catastrophe. This new fascism offers even its followers little beyond protected survival and the pleasure of punishing enemies, promising escape for the chosen elect and ruin for everyone else.

We talk about “New Gaza,” AI and Silicon Valley’s alliance with Trump, climate-driven fortress politics, conspiracy theories from above, and fissures inside the far-right coalition.

Awesome episode, but again it was expected with Naomi and Astra on it :)

Incredible episode. Please unlock this one

This was such a good interview! I listened to the TrueAnon with these girls also. I feel like it’s so rare anymore to get two book-plug interviews that aren’t 80% identical so I almost skipped but I’m glad I didn’t. Very refreshing thoughtful stuff. Idk how to read yet but maybe I’ll start with their new book.

I've listened to a lot of interviews of Naomi and Astra about the book. By far, this is the best one. It was an interactive conversation rather than an interviewer trying to find a different way to ask the same questions everyone else is asking. Excellent episode and the book is fantastic.

It is my personal hope that Jake NEVER gets the analogy.

Can Naomi Klein be a guest every single week 🥹

L
Livia · September 18, 2026

FYI.... there's multiple episodes of 389 (one is titled Raising Hell) and Naomi's episode isn't appearing as a normal (free) episode

I love Jake, I swear I do but in recent episodes he's been... a bit much

I love seeing Naomi on the podcast! I tell everyone who will listen that the shock doctrine is standard and expected reading for anyone living in the United States

Naomi's mentioning of Silo reminds me of that movie Equilibrium with Christian Bale and Sean Bean. That movie is deeply silly (and kind of campy 💚) and the first time I watched it I cried when Sean Bean quoted poetry, when Christian Bale discovered music, when he saved the puppy. I think Jake mentioned this movie before; always makes me smile to hear other people bring up obscure sci-fi films that deserve more viewings). AI can never make camp.

IMO this is one of the best episodes of this whole, great podcast.

An excellent point on how, throughout history, the elite has often been at the forefront of using conspiracy theories to exert or reinforce power. This is not entirely new, history rarely repeats but it does rhyme. Look at how rife anti-semitism was throughout much of Europe from the Medieval period through to the end of WW2, and beyond in certain places. The conspiracy theories surrounding this was utilised to scape goat a minority group, to keep the peasants dissatisfaction firmly on an out group rather than at their liege lords. Obviously I’m simplifying but look at what that wrought by the 1940s, what it enabled. These types of ideas are useful to powerful people. Anyway, great episode, braw stuff!

No comment on Jake and Travis habging out with Hasan Piker at Julian's appartement? EDIT: Apparently I should go back to the start of the show. He was on Episode 21

J
Jordan Rose · September 16, 2026

I said "whaaaa?!" Out loud 😂 Also fun fact. I dated a twitch streamer awhile ago who did a lot of like liveral-y twitch round tables. At the time, I knew nothing about twitch. We went to a party and there was this awkward dude there who kinda didn't talk a lot but was hot. Later when I got more chronically online, I was like I know him! When my friend was watch tiktoks. And apparently it was Hasan piker 😂

Ironically it might be older people that save us from ai dominance. You don’t have to understand the tech to protest against data centres. The concerns cross all political and social ideologies from NIMBYs to eco warriors.

J

I actually do believe we're in the end times of Revelation, and that the tech fascists are bringing it about because of their own belief in it. They just can't believe they are the villains in that story, so they project it out onto the world.

M
Mervtheperv · September 16, 2026

My bio dad went hard born again Christian Baptist when I was a kid and man the shit he would talk about regarding the end times was so fucking crazy, even as an 11 year old I was like my dad is cooked lol and this was the early 80’s Anyway I just wanted to set up a little bit so you knew I’ve been thinking about this for a long time because my dad was crazy for Jesus in a way that seems Deep South but we’re Canadian lol Like ask me if it bothered me that I was going to hell when I died?? I’m 11 in Tim Hortons on our legally mandated visit and you drop this nut? He has been saved for two minutes and already I’m going to hell for not deep throating the kool aid as quickly and willingly as him.. bonkers Ok I’m finally ready to get to why I’m here responding, I agree 💯 that religious nut jobs like my dad are pissed Jesus didn’t come back when he said, so how about we just take it upon ourselves to bring on the end times and teach these heathens a thing or two about what is owed to christians (heaven and off this rock) and where the rest of us belonged (hell on earth) Here we are, christo white nationalist fascists ushering in the end times to save them from what they fear the most, facing reality.

They laugh at gamers while forgetting that their own podcast has roots in gamergate. Maybe they should pay a little more attention to our resident gamers complaints.

I have a theory about the idea of AI being "the last bubble" that I haven't heard elaborated by anyone smart enough to do it justice but it has to do with the most recent bubbles in tech: crypto and VR. All three technologies (AI being the 3rd) require the construction of massive data centers to run huge quantities of RAM. My theory is that this is the primary goal of all three technologies. They are marketing for data centers BECAUSE all of the big Internet Companies aren't really growing anymore. Their profits are shrinking and they can't get VC money anymore because they are incumbents in the tech industry and so they are looking for any way to cut costs. One of their biggest expenses is their backend servers (hence why AWS is the most profitable division of Amazon) and so they are all frantically trying to get more computing power turned on by any means necessary. They don't care if it's bored apes, legless coworkers, or Garfield with big naturals. Their goal is More Computer and the details of how don't matter. I think when (not if) the bubble bursts on AI, we're going to see that companies like Meta, Netflix, Microsoft etc. have been getting creative with their accounting for a long time to cover up the fact that they aren't actually bringing in money like they used to. That's also why everyone is betting so hard on AI. They're desperate, they're willing to try anything, and when it all crashes down, they're going to say it's your fault for sharing a Netflix account or refusing to sign up for YouTube premium. Not exactly a falsifiable theory without getting secret information from one of these companies but there's something of an echo of 2008 around all of this that has me feeling suspicious. Time will tell.

M
Mikachu · September 16, 2026

Might be a contributing factor for some companies and the military/intelligence blob, though I still think the main driving factor for the huge AI push is just the promise of being able to replace your labor force entirely.
